Apples! Apples! Apples! Crunchy and tasty, sweet and tart, in colorful shades of red, yellow, and green -- sometimes all three -- everyone loves apples! In this lively and vibrant book, young readers will learn how apples grow, from the planting of a tree, to the pollination of buds by bees, and on to the harvest. And then comes the fun part as apples are used to tease the taste buds in so many ways -- in pies and strudel, in cider and applesauce, but most of all, in that one simple crunch when one bites into an apple's crisp sweetness. Ken Robbins's hand-colored photographs will make you want to take a bite yourself!
Animations accompanies the first museum exhibition to focus on the films and videos of the acclaimed contemporary German artist and photographer Thomas Demand (born 1964). Demand is best known for his large-scale color photographs of objects or sites taken from images in the popular media, which he painstakingly reconstructs in paper. With these new films and videos, Demand has taken this practice to the next stage, extending his investigations in to real time and space by animating his paper constructions. The primary focus of the volume is the two-minute tour de force video entitled "Pacific Sun," which takes place in a cruise ship bar during a violent storm at sea. This volume--the first to survey Demand's films and videos--brings these latest works back full circle, but as video stills. Also included is a major essay on the artist by the acclaimed photo critic Michael Fried.
"A family album preserves only carefully selected photographs. Out of an entire life, it stores only handpicked moments, privileging special occasions, displaying only happy moments. It tends to underline a group's social links, to highlight a shared life. None of this figures in She: instead of a chronology, time is stopped. There is no group photo or desire to stage a collective destiny, only isolated models and individuals who do not seem to communicate amongst themselves; no happy moments or picturesque places, only indifferent moments in ordinary places. The models pose, but reservedly, often without looking into the camera. And even when we do see their faces, we don't really seem to see them. When we close the book and think a bit about it, we cannot but see She as the anti-family album par excellence." --Quentin Bajac, Chief Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art

Inspired by dioramas of wild flora and fauna found in natural history museums, Jim Naughten's digital reimaginations of a familiar yet alien world, explore the idea of wildlife becoming a lost fantasy. From orangutans swinging through psychedelic forests, to deer roaming pastel-hued canyons-Naughten's depictions of nature in an artificial color palette convey a distinct sense of dislocation and growing estrangement. His fantastical tableaus question our rose-tinted image of a natural world that is largely fictional. In fact we are entering the Eremozoic-a term coined by biologist and writer E. O. Wilson to describe the current era of mass extinction triggered by human activity. Also referred to as "The Age of Loneliness," the term alludes to the isolation that will follow the destruction of our deeply rooted relationships with other species.JIM NAUGHTEN (*1969, Horsham, Sussex) explores historical and natural history subject matters using photography, stereoscopy, and painting. Trained in both photography and painting, the London-based artist combines these backgrounds in a practice he refers to as "digital painting". Treating photographs like oil paintings on canvas, he uses digital enhancement to alter reality.

This volume offers a radical challenge to our idea of the photobook, arguing that the genre should be understood not as the artistic vision of one person but as a collective endeavour created through the confluence of individuals and competing interests. Today's market is geared for photographer-driven books and buoyed by the theoretical framework proposed by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. But The photobook world casts a wider net, paying particular attention to anonymous photographers, institutional publications, digital opportunities, unrealized projects, illegal practices, collectives, poets and the reader. Investigating North American, British and French photobooks from 1900 to the present, the chapters uncover forgotten social objects and show how personal histories are bound to broader historical movements. At the same time, a number engage with canonical authors - notably Claudia Andujar and George Love, Mohamed Bourouissa, Walker Evans, Susan Meiselas, Roland Penrose and the Visual Studies Workshop - to reveal the original contexts and "biographies" of the photographs. Featuring contributors from a variety of professional and disciplinary backgrounds, including photographers, curators, historians and other researchers, The photobook world provides a better understanding of how the meaning of photobooks is collectively produced both inside and outside the art market.

Ornament is essential to architecture. The linear categories brought to architecture through the enlightenment have since undermined ornament's spectrum of abstract and visceral qualities. Through a non-western reading of water and ornament, the representations of the Alhambra's past reclaim their essential roles in forming the culture of Granada and the role of ornament in architecture. For students and academics in architecture, design and media studies, architectural and art history, and related fields, this book explores how the stories of sites like the Alhambra can enable the renewal of ornament through historic and contemporary tools in architectural representation.
