This unique, visually exciting look at the evolution of nightclubs across America and Europe since the 1960s reveals an unwavering truth about club culture-the one constant is change. Opening with the psychedelic haunts of the 1960s New York pop art scene and closing more than half a century later with the rise of post-club happenings, "Temporary Pleasure" shows how nightlife spaces have evolved to meet the needs of their generation, and how each generation was seeking something a little different from the one before. Each chapter focuses on a distinct phase and location: Italy's politically radical clubs of the '60s; New York City's disco scene; Detroit and Chicago's techno and house paradises; Ibiza's counterculture communal retreats; Britain's rave culture; and Berlin's techno scene. The clubs come to life in double-page spreads that feature specs and detailed profiles. Author John Leo Gillen offers his take on various important cultural, design, and architectural details, while numerous photographs offer their own vibey stories. The book features interviews with people who were involved in a number of the scenes included, from NYC disco mainstay DJ Justin Strauss to Ben Kelly, architect of Manchester's legendary venue The Haçienda. As the world emerges from its Covid-induced isolation, this celebration of crowded rooms, dance-worthy beats, and communal transcendence feels more important than ever.
A major new publication looking at the rich trajectory of photographic practice that centres the work of Black female and non-binary artists from the late 19th century to the present day. For decades, women have been overlooked in the cultural history of photography, especially Black female and genderfluid artists whose crucial contributions to this relatively young medium are often missing from prevailing narratives. More than just a 'corrective', this stunning, image-led anthology features up to one hundred artists and photographers from diverse cultural backgrounds, geographies, and genres. Readers will encounter the pioneering works of Florestine Perrault Collins-one of the few African American women working in photography at the beginning of the 20th century-and iconic imagery by path-shaping artists and visual activists such as Ming Smith, Maud Sulter, Carrie Mae Weems, Lola Flash, Zanele Muholi, Mònica de Miranda, Rahima Gambo, and Aida Silvestri, as well as a remarkable constituency of creative practitioners working with self-portraiture, performance and collage such as Frida Orupabo, Ayana V. Jackson, Nona Faustine, Atong Atem, Hélène Amouzou, Lebohang Kganye, Sethembile Msezane, Heather Agyepong, Khadija Saye, Silvia Rosi and many others. This carefully curated visual gathering stands on its own as an impressive collection of examples of socially-engaged, imaginative and poetic global photographies.
Widely considered Japan's most influential and prolific photographer, Daido Moriyama has been challenging conventions of the art form for more than a half century. This exhaustive and electrifying retrospective, published in cooperation with the Daido Moriyama Foundation and based on entirely new research, looks at every stage of Moriyama's extensive career, including his extraordinary images as well as his conceptual contributions to photography. One of a generation of postwar Japan's groundbreaking artists, Moriyama has continually established his own visual grammar. This book features more than 190 chronologically arranged images that reveal his constantly evolving career: his early editorial work of the mid-1960s, focused on the American occupation and the experimental theater; his radical experimentation of late 1960s and the 1970s; the self-reflexive photos of the 1980s and 1990s; and his ongoing exploration of cities, among other relevant moments. It also includes more than 400 spreads from Moriyama's rarely seen publications, mapping the sources of his visual production. Rounding out the volume are texts by the editor and leading Japanese scholars, a personal essay by the artist, and a full chronology of his life and work. Accompanying a major exhibition on Moriyama's output this impressive volume reframes Moriyama's legacy, and is certain to become the definitive publication on his work.
This special edition revives an acclaimed work. Exquisite photographs showcase England's finest buildings, guiding the reader through five centuries of English architecture and interior design. In this new, special edition of a cult classic work, photographer Derry Moore and interior designer David Mlinaric take readers on a panoramic tour inside some of Britain's finest buildings, guiding them through five centuries of English interior design. Mlinaric's informed text and Moore's perceptive photographs present the best examples of both public and private buildings-from 16th-century Haddon Hall, Chastleton and Knole to 17th-century Hatfield and Wilton; Houghton Hall and Syon House from the 18th century; Apsley House, the Palace of Westminster and Waddesdon Manor from the nineteenth; and 20th-century examples including Charleston and the Apollo Victoria Theatre. The work of British masters including Inigo Jones, William Kent and Robert Adam, as well as of influential 20th-century tastemasters such as Nancy Lancaster, Pauline de Rothschild and David Hicks, is revealed in striking photographs and authoritative texts. Anglophiles, armchair tourists, and lovers of grand interiors will relish the photographs of these wonderful buildings, while discovering more about the designers and architects who built them, charting the evolution that has made British style so alluring, enduring, and widely imitated over the centuries.

When You Invent the Ship, You Also Invent the Shipwreck is a stream of images from the past 25 years of Peter Funch's vast archive. Images created around the world, with different potentials, all motivated by a hungry curiosity. Images composed with an array of image capturing tools, digital and analogue, some heavily reworked, others straight from the negative. Interconnecting with images of passages of texts from an eclectic collection of writers. When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck is a visual odyssey that engages you in media res. Leaving behind the concept of traditional time; past - present - future - for a prevailing feeling of now. The work unfolds differently with each journey from eye through mind. A sense of emancipation emanates from the book - images set free from restraining concepts and categories - born again into this world of endless images. This feeling of sustainable revolution is enhanced by the book production and title. The book is printed on dead stock left from other publications produced by the craftwomen and men at Narayana Press. A process that somehow sets the work free, as the look and feel of the book is released and left to chance. The title is a recycled fragment of a Paul Virilio quote, in the present context a reminder of the cyclical nature of creation and destruction. Constant transformation.
One minute and thirty seconds is the average length allotted to a news feature. For more than ten years, artist Monika Huber has been photographing images from daily news reports that bear witness to protest, riots, war and violence, as well as their consequences. She saves the images digitally, prints them out and reworks them by means of painting and drawing. Over the years, an archive has been created; it reveals a "grammar" of news images and invites us to examine the crisis reporting of television news in a critical way. This selection of over 100 images from the archive is accompanied by contributions positioning Archive OneThirty from art-historical, philosophical, political-scientific and journalistic perspectives. Artistic exposure of media images and their rhetoric With contributions by Ernst van Alphen, Mieke Bal, James W. Davis, Antje Kapust, Ute Schaeffer, Ulrich Wilmes, and an introduction by Bernhart Schwenk
