Years Like Water is a decade-long look at a small Russian village, its inhabitants, ramshackle institutions, nature, and mythology. The series loosely follows the lives of four interconnected families, showing children grow up unsupervised in a magical wilderness, and adults struggle for survival in the same. For over ten years of visits, Sablin attended birthdays and funerals, drank tea with the grandmothers, and listened to stories of the villagers'' loneliness and love for one another. Her photographs from Alekhovshchina explore and describe a world that doesn''t fit into the neat narrative of ''Putin''s Russia'' put forth by both Eastern and Western media. It is more complicated - interweaving beauty, poverty, trauma, and hope.

n his twenty-fifth artist's book, Volker Renner adapts the courtroom drama genre. On the movie screen, the latter is defined by its heavy reliance on dialogue; Renner, by contrast, lets the pictures speak. And it was images, not words, that moved the millions who, through twenty-five days of proceedings, seized on the opportunity to watch the livestream of the trial pitting Johnny Depp against Amber Heard on Court TV, YouTube, or various other social media channels. Both the ex-husband and wife's media-savvy self-dramatization and the viewers' reactions and comments grew to hitherto unseen dimensions. The two actors' private lives were staged for all to see, reality-show-style, as though as based on a secret screenplay. In "Ein Prozess," Volker Renner now opens the pages of that storyboard. Each day of the hearings and trial in 2021 and 2022 is the subject of a dedicated chapter in which the artist has the principal characters appear in film stills he extracted from the recordings from the trial. Hewing to a rigorously documentary approach, he compiles a visual transcript of the presentation of evidence, making it accessible to a discourse analysis that, in the Foucauldian tradition, investigates not just language but above all the language of images. Even the allegation that prompted the trial concerned the damage to a star's public image, rather than a truth that could be borne out by evidence: more than anything else, it is images that are seen and read today and that, in being seen and read, exert the greatest power imaginable in the struggle over what is right and fair. The jury agreed with a public majority in finding in Johnny Depp's favor. A matter of performance?J O H N C . D E P P , I I v.

Kirjan sisältö on seuraava:JohdantoLasipallovalokuvauksen historiaKuvia lasipalloilla kaikilleValokuvaaminen julkisestiPäätelmä Tämäntyyppinen valokuvaus sopii kaikille, minkä vuoksi tästä trendistä on tullut niin suuri.

This lavishly illustrated book gives an overview of the celebrated photographer Ruud van Empel's career, from the 1990's up to today. Lush vegetation in a jungle, butterflies in a field of colorful, blooming flowers. The work of Ruud van Empel (Breda, 1958) initially seems lovely, but appearances are deceptive: 'The struggle for life and death continues day and night in nature,' says the artist. Van Empel's works are wondrous and alienating at the same time. For however normal it may seem, he brings together things that never come together in reality. He uses countless details of people, plants, animals or objects photographed by himself to cut and paste digitally. On the computer, he assembles this material into a composition, a process that, until 1995, was done in an analog way. The resulting `collages¿ are ingenious and realistic, but the images do not exist in real life. With painting, film and (staged) photography as his sources of inspiration, he has, like a pioneer, developed a new genre. He himself speaks of `building a photographic image¿ or `photo-objects¿. With his precisely composed scenes, worked out to the smallest details, Van Empel plays with image-making. His fictional worlds seduce, they lead the viewer astray or cause a sense of discomfort. Without seeking controversy, there are 'other' meanings lurking under the surface of Van Empel's aesthetic images. In doing so, he shows us how we are influenced by different visual cultures in everyday life. This monograph offers an overview of Van Empel's oeuvre from the 1990s to the present day.

Thatcher's Children, a long-term project by photographer Craig Easton, examines the intergenerational nature of poverty as experienced by three generations of the Williams family in the north of England. The passage of time shown in the book demonstrates how deprivation is connected to the social policy failures of successive governments. Thatcher's Children was born out of a series first made in 1992 focusing on two parents and six children living in a hostel for homeless families in Blackpool, England. The project was made in response to a speech by Peter Lilley, then Secretary of State for Social Security, in which he announced his determination to 'close down the something-for-nothing society.' French newspaper Libération dispatched a journalist to northern England to find out what this society looked like, and Easton was commissioned to take the accompanying photographs.
