Art and photography have played a key role in capturing and reflecting on the conditions for the Brexit referendum. Illustrated by a range of work by artists including Cornelia Parker, Wolfgang Tillmans, David Shrigley, Tacita Dean and Jeremy Deller as well as the satirists Cold War Steve and Led By Donkeys, who offer fascinating insights into their work, along with ephemera such as campaign posters and leaflets, and more personal photographs which capture the searing impact of the vote on both UK and EU citizens, this impassioned and compelling book explores the role of the photograph and sometimes moving image in the ongoing consequences of what the author views as a political cataclysm. From Jeremy Deller's film of musicians protesting outside the House of Commons and Mark Duffy's extraordinary photograph of a debate held inside, to portraits of those whose lives have been changed immeasurably, this art of protest brings together disparate aspects of the bitterly fought battle to remain and the consequences of the decision to leave the EU on 1 January 2021 and serves as a reminder of this political and social schism. In doing so, the book offers insight into our society, exploring issues of national identity, migration, colonialism/decolonialism, racism, the flag, austerity, the border in Northern Ireland, Scotland and how artists can intervene in political debate. It offers an original, visually stimulating and attractive examination of this still topical subject, revealing how art and photography can capture and memorialise key moments in our history.

Cappellificio Cervo is to the world of millinery what the analog camera is to the world of photography: a place of return to fine art and inimitable craftsmanship. It is the artistic integrity of this historic institution dating back to 1897, that photographer Giovanni Previdi has documented so beautifully in How to Make a Hat.

Maya Art's work explores themes of femininity, religious syncretism and cultural diversity. In 2017, she spent a year in the Afro-Mexican village of Costa Chica. Oaxaca, in the home of Juliana, a lawyer and her teenage daughter, Veronica. It was Juliana who introduced her to the women of the community - healers, midwives, widows, single mothers and mothers with many children. They live relatively separately from men due to a local history of violence but the life of community revolves around them. The village is steeped in magic, hidden energies and secrets. Traditional medicine and healing and healing techniques such as espanto (soul cleansing) or empacho (healing) abound. The work explores three key themes - the anthropology of Afro-Mexican villages, the coming together of Catholic and African spirituality and the place of women in society. For Maya it is also a form of autobiography in which her own multicultural background is reflected and she chose mixed media collage and painting on photographs to reflect her experiences of the village This book is the result of a maquette made during a workshop directed by Ana Casas and Ramon Pez at the invitation of Hydra, an art gallery and art gallery and publishing house based in Mexico City. The project received the Dummy Book Award at the Rencontres d'Arles 2022.

Traipsing along the river bottoms of the Current River over and around the log drifts to follow the herd (about twelve) Missouri wild horses (especially the Little Shawnee Creek and the Rocky Creek herds) with most of my time about evenly spent in Carter County with the Rocky Creek herd (the most spirited herd of the four herds). After many months, over two years, I was able to become more adept at their movements; but still the herds at times were skittish. Most of my photos of the Rocky Creek herd were taken within Carter County near Stegall Mountain, and its indigenous glades ablaze with many varieties of wild flowers, where the Collard lizards, Black bears, Eagles, Hawks, Bobcats, Deer, Elk, Mountain Lions, Wild Pigs, Snakes, and numerous small animals and birds roam near Shannon County's Klepzig Mill where years ago was powered by Rocky Creek on its way to the Current River where the wild horses occasionally drink.

In October of 1970, I received a call from Frank Wyle, CEO and founder of Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo, California. One of their subsidiaries, American Tool Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, was importing machine tools from Hindustan Machine Tool (HMT) in India. They needed photographs of their facilities for marketing. Two weeks later, I was on my way to India. In our spare time, Frank and I drove through the countryside; it was like stepping back into time. The photo opportunities were fantastic! At that time, there were only a few cars in the villages, mostly bullock carts and bicycles. Upon my return to Los Angeles, I decided to put together a collection of photographs called "Rural India." My next assignment in India, "India: The Sexy Subcontinent," was for Playboy. The photographs appeared in Oui magazine. Our locations were in the Konarak Area and the Maharajah of Jamnagar's palace. These photos are not in the book. I returned several more times in 1972 and 1973 to the villages to continue my "Rural India" project. When I returned in 1973, I contacted the Government of India Tourist Office and Pan American World Airways to sponsor me in a museum show, "Rural India." I got the sponsorship and was featured in an exhibit in 1974 at The Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles. The Government of India Tourist Office sent me to India many times in the '70s, '80s, '90s to photograph tourist locations. I have returned to India in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2018 on my own to continue my "My Impressions of India" project. Check out the locations on page 16 of the book. India and my many experiences there have had a big influence on my life. On my first trip, I was in a boat on the Ganga River at Varanasi. At sunrise, I looked over the edge of the boat and saw my reflection in the water. The person looking back at me was an Indian man. I knew at that time I had a past life in India. The experience gave me the chills. When I was in the villages, I saw the kids at play with each other, and their happy smiles had an effect on me. That led me to ask myself: Are we happier with all our possessions or are they happier without them?

There is no book for creativity, but when it comes to visual arts, the first focus is on the camera. As much as a camera is necessary for photography, it is also necessary to have knowledge of technology related to the camera. Often after buying an expensive camera, people are unaware of the technical knowledge of the camera, so they mostly take photos on easy or auto shoot modes, then they do not get much good results, for amateur photography people, photography and media students Also the technical settings of the camera create problems! For photography lovers, I have tried to write the complex settings of the camera in simple words of Hindi language. In photojournalism, I have tried to bring the experiences gained from thirty and seventeen years of photography teaching in my first book "Roshni Ka Tilism Hai Photography"! Those associated with the photography business, media students, children, housewives and people who are unaware of photography can also increase their knowledge by using this book after reading it! It is hoped that this book will prove to be extremely useful for amateur photography lovers of any age

Voyages en Sardaigne is a collection of unconventional thematic guides on this island in the middle of the Mediterranean. They offer to the reader different ways of observation and restitution of its territory, always characterized by an uncertain temporality:the present and the past merge to build a unique landscape, far from the convulsive setting of the contemporaneity. The Sardinian context becomes a paradigm to go beyond the debate between the two opposite poles: novelty and tradition. To weave this portrait, photographs and texts take part in the production of an anthology capable of offering a multiplicity of possible represen- tations. Words and images form a linguistic whole in which the word and the gaze reveal the possible rela- tionships and directions to discover these places. Nelle miniere di Iglesias / Into the Mines of Iglesias is the first part of this exploration that focuses on soil, excavations, incisions, mutations, transpositions and silence of Sulcis-Iglesiente, a territory marked by an industrial history. A wandering through time and space of a region 'built', transformed, crossed by different types of works, infrastructures, relationships between things. These signs, these scars, are today the distinc- tive features of an extraordinary mining landscape. A space to discover through visual and textual narration.

Common Place is a visual meditation on Central Park. The project explores the results of intentions set forth by the park's chief architect, Frederick L. Olmsted, who wanted Central Park to be a democratic space that allows all New Yorkers to escape from the distractions of urban life in Manhattan. Olmsted believed that, by recreating the peacefulness of nature, parks would soothe and restore the human spirit. Never has Olmsted's vision been more relevant than during this global crisis, which has taken millions of lives while stay-at-home regulations swept across the globe. Whether using the expansive landscape as a place to relax, to escape or to love, this project translates these actions photographically. Common Place illustrates the importance of public parks and how during this moment, New Yorkers found what they needed within Central Park.

Sorika is pleased to announce the publication of Gareth McConnell's new book, To the Beat of the Drum. The book comprises photographs of youthful members of Northern Ireland's militaristic, Protestant marching bands, who McConnell carefully situates under the trippy magic of his super-chromatic, hedonistic lighting. These photographs and their mood-altering colours are compelling visual studies of youth and social identity - McConnell gives strong emphasis to how identity is subject to the variable relationships of the individual and the group. The book is accompanied by an essay by Sean O'Hagan (first published in The Observer's New Review, 2021). Much of the youth identity seen in McConnell's previous work relates to outsider or misfit groups, which McConnell has documented with high sensibility. These include rave and dance culture, using and recovering addicts, and the nature of the allegiances formed through musical identity. In an unexpected reframing of his interests, McConnell's attention in To the Beat of the Drum gives attention to young people's participation in the militaristic, culturally complex, power assertions of Northern Ireland's working class culture, in this case a Protestant one. During Northern Ireland's 'marching season' thousands of Protestant parades take place, whose controversial war drums and flutes announce Protestant loyalism's celebration of the military victory of King William of Orange over Catholic King James II in 1690. Catholics have their own strong versions of power assertion, and both Protestants and Catholics may each be seen as simultaneously an insider and an outsider group, within the context of historical group relativities on the island of Ireland. McConnell is from Northern Ireland, and his religion influenced background, in combination with his own outsider life experiences, qualify his contemplation of what insider and outsider status might mean. It seems that McConnell is observing the great paradox of the human experience as both individual and social. This has been addressed by many; Kierkegaard, William James, and syncretism, and includes some areas that might be called those of disorganised (as opposed to organised) religion. In this way McConnell honours ideas and thoughts about the nature of crowds and the individual, and offers hints of something more universal. This universal something seems to be beyond just a local imagination, and might even be blissful and transcendent. Neal Brown, 2022_____'This summer's marching season may be particularly tense, even volatile, owing to unionist anger at the "border in the Irish sea" created by the imposition of the post-Brexit Northern Irish customs protocol. In early April, just a week after McConnell shot these portraits, the worst rioting in years erupted in Carrickfergus and Larne as well as in other working-class loyalist areas in Belfast and Derry. The protagonists were mainly young teenagers, though many commentators suggested that the violence had been orchestrated by older members of loyalist paramilitary groups. The BBC noted that the areas affected were "among the most deprived in the country, with the lowest level of educational attainment in Europe". Against all this, Gareth McConnell's portraits of young working-class Protestant band members are all the more resonant. The young band members often exude a sense of awkward vulnerability. Bathed in soft light and colour, his subjects stare inquiringly into the lens or off into the distance as if distracted by wandering thoughts. Their engagement with the camera is tentative, uncertain, as if they're not quite sure why they have been singled out for its attention. What is also striking is just how young some of them are. You cannot help but wonder how much the band experience is another way of inculcating in them the divisive, often sectarian attitudes that are handed down through the generations. 'Sean O'Hagan | The Observer, 2021

What does it mean to dream about tomorrow? This new title articulates how dreaming about tomorrow can be an act of bravery. The publication follows an exhibition of the same title, which took place at Nidi Gallery (Tokyo) in October 2022. The exhibition and publication feature recent paintings, some in oil, others using natural pigments, including some created from plants grown in the artist's allotment. Photographs from Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck's ongoing series Analog Diary and unique collaborative works with ceramic designer Olivia Fiddes (UK) and weaver Pauline Simonet (France), as well as The Gardening Drawing Club and the Seed Library set up at Nidi Gallery are also featured in this publication. This publication features a new essay by PhD holder and Oslo University-based researcher Veronika Muchitsch as a written response to the project. "Dreaming About Tomorrow radiates with a radical softness and unwavering openness that characterises Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck's artistic and lived practice at large. " Veronika Muchitsch "As I have suggested in this essay, dreaming is here not an entirely utopian activity, but materialises through actions of care, compassion, and community that weave an intricate fabric of time. In the face of endings, loss, and time standing still in small and big ways, this work inspires us to dare to remember, to build the present and to dream of tomorrow, as blurry as it may appear.
