"Strategically located on the Atlantic Ocean at the westernmost point of the continent, Senegal is well-known as an epicenter of Africa's modernities, modernisms, and liberation movements. It was also one of the countries where the daguerreotype first arrived in sub-Saharan Africa before circulating inland and across the region. At that time, Senegal did not exist as a nation state; local kingdoms were still in power and the French presence was limited to trading posts along the coast. The pioneers of photography in the 1840s were not exclusively Europeans, but also African, African-American, and Asian entrepreneurs. In the decades that followed, amateurs and professionals working in rural areas continued to explore and expand photography's possibilities. Senegal's photographic histories thrived as part of a global visual economy during and despite the colonial experience. Its works emerged as an integral part of the history of this medium, which unlike any other was a global enterprise from the very beginning. Portrait and place offers the first history of photography in this important country, from its first iterations, photographers, and patrons of the 1840s to photographers such as Oumar Ka (b. 1930) and Mama Casset (1908-1992), who were were active in the 1960s during the transition from the colonial to the postcolonial era. Giulia Paoletti presents close studies of photographs, firmly anchoring these objects, their authors, and their consumers in a global context that extends across West Africa, the Black Atlantic, and the greater Islamic community-in other words, beyond the borders of colonial empire. Based on over ten years of field and archival research in Senegal, this book features almost exclusively new, previously unpublished visual material and explores both professional and amateur artists working in a wide variety of genres, from landscape to portraiture, and in media such as daguerreotypes and glass paintings. As the first book to focus exclusively on Senegal's photographic histories, Portrait and place expands the notions of what the medium has been and can be, from a Eurocentric model to one that is decidedly-insistingly-larger and more inclusive"--

The artist book "Marcel van Eeden - 1898" is being published to coincide with the Hans-Thoma Prize 2023. The prize-winner, Marcel van Eeden (* 1965), explores Thoma's little-known travels to the Netherlands in 1898. He reflects on Thoma's analysis of Rembrandt van Rijn or Paulus Potter, under the problematic influence of cultural theorist Julius Langbehn. Present-day gum bichromate images of the places Thoma visited alongside historical quotes by Thoma and Langbehn result in a multifaceted, critical consideration of nationalistic views on culture.
Self-staging, self-exposure, self-erasure - these are the themes that Michaela Moscouw (*1961) worked on uncompromisingly, excessively and memorably over three decades. Until the early 1980s, the Viennese artist painted abstract pictures, then she destroyed her entire oeuvre and filmed herself doing it. She thus changed medium and since then has exclusively used the means of photography. She obsessively pursued concepts and designs of an aestheticised body experience. For her self-stagings as a radical act and expression of personal emotionality, she acted like an actress rehearsing different roles, questioning gender-specific clichés and body images. She worked on the terrain of VALIE EXPORTS, Friederike Pezolds or Renate Bertlmanns.Today, Michaela Moscouw lives in seclusion in Vienna. Her works have been continuously destroyed, yet works by her have survived in public and private collections. The catalogue presents the preserved photographic work, from early large-format self-portraits in black and white to the colour images from the early 2000s.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Michaela Moscouw, Anwesend Abwesend, Francisco Carolinum, Linz from 10.02. - 14.05.2023

Madagascar is regarded as a jewel of nature, where due to its isolated location away from all continents, a unique flora and fauna was able to develop with numerous species that are found nowhere else in the world. This includes an amazing and unique variety of butterflies - and especially moths, which are systematically presented here for the first time in detail with over 1,000 photos. All displayed animals were photographed alive, as they were captured at night by Armin Dett with the help of a light trap and then released. In cooperation with leading collections and scientists they were identified and assigned, their genus families characterized and described. The book not only make you marvel at nature's amazing creativeness through the stunning photos, but also provides an identification guide and is a valuable research tool. Furthermore, it is an important record of the current time, as climate change and habitat destruction due to clearing and population growth threaten this natural paradise in the Indian Ocean.
"Conversation with My Other Me" is a photo art book by Danish photographer René Riis featuring a series of multi-photograph portraits.A unique cabinet of mirrors created specifically for this purpose captures one-of-a-kind portraits of various individuals: a mixture of prominent public figures, among them dancers, politicians, actors and sporting personalities, as well as unknowns with a charismatic presence. What makes these multi-photographs so extraordinary is that the person is portrayed from five different angles. In addition, in front of the mirrors, the subjects develop a personal and unique dynamic with themselves. It is, after all, a highly unusual experience to see oneself from so many different perspectives simultaneously.
"Character Arc", the documentary photo series by Pascal Haas (b. 1976), features a collection of portraits of Berlin-based actors. The photos, taken between 2021 and 2023, depict the actors personally, in the park or on the street-outside of their roles, away from the stage and the set. The serene black-and-white analogue portraits show the artists as approachable, free from any artifice. In this way, the images reveal both their strength and their vulnerability, reflecting the uncertainties of the modern age. The rhythm of the series is based on the seasons, as can be discerned from the light, the clothes they are wearing, and the natural surroundings.Actors: Leonie Benesch, Pit Bukowski, Marie Burchard, Marlene Burow, Luka Dimic, Maren Eggert, Mala Emde, Michelangelo Fortuzzi, Luisa-Céline Gaffron, Franz Hartwig, Jacob Matschenz, Wanja Mues, Johannes Nussbaum, Rick Okon, Valerie Pachner, Anneke Kim Sarnau, Daniel Sträßer, Sabin Tambrea, Mina Tander, Lena Urzendowsky, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Luise Wolfram
"It is a sign of wisdom to negotiate instead of fighting" spoke H¿ Chí Minh, Vietnamese revolutionary and politician. He died in 1969 during the Vietnam War and did not live to see the withdrawal of the American invaders and the reunification of his homeland. As prime minister and president until his death, he determined the destiny of his country, whose people affectionately called him Uncle H¿. Influenced by deep Marxist-Leninist convictions, he became a worldwide symbol of the striving for self-determination. Even today, gratitude for this is omnipresent in the Vietnamese population. The book is a collection of selected quotes from H¿ Chí Minh juxtaposed with Michael Herman's expressive photographs of modern Vietnam.

The publication is her most comprehensive to date, showcasing projects produced in the American South and West, as well as in France and Mexico, and is the first to feature all series from across the course of her career.
An unprecedented delve into the dazzling, inventive and long-overlooked Surrealist photograms and poetry of Anneliese HagerThis publication introduces the untold story of German artist and poet Anneliese Hager. Active from the 1930s to the 1960s, Hager began her photographic experimentation in Germany during the Nazi censure of modern art. Her preferred medium was the cameraless photograph, or photogram-an image made by placing objects directly on (or in close proximity to) a light-sensitive surface and exposing the assembled material to light. In its final form, a photogram is a one-of-a-kind work that reverses light and dark: the longer the paper is covered, and hence unexposed, the brighter the covered parts will be, and vice versa. Hager called these bright areas "white shadows."Hager's photograms offer a more inclusive history of the medium, synthesizing the technique's 20th-century avant-garde trajectory (best known in the work of László Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray) and its 19th-century prehistories in the realm of science and in practices such as the making of silhouettes, collage and textile arts-pursuits often coded feminine. In 1945, all Hager's existing artwork was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden during World War II. This book offers an unprecedented reconstruction of her development and postwar creation of otherworldly, Surrealist visions in photograms and poems, a selection of which appear here in English for the first time. For Hager, the photogram was significant for its provocative tonal inversions and surprising chance effects, but also for what emerges from the dark. Anneliese Hager (1904-97) was a German Surrealist poet, translator and photo artist. She began making photographs in Berlin in the 1920s, and from 1935 began to experiment with photograms. Hager also made the first German translations of French authors such as Apollinaire, Breton, Char, Jarry, Lautréamont and Yourcenar.
