This is a rural England that still exists - often little changed over the centuries. Gilson exploits the light, and the mist and cloud of winter landscapes to reveal a vision of England which can appear romantic, even nostalgic, yet it is nevertheless very real and contemporary.
A concise survey of the pioneering work of London-based Ghanaian photographer James Barnor. With a practice spanning six decades and two continents, ranging from street to studio and fashion to documentary, Ghanaian photographer James Barnor (b.1929) is now recognised as a pivotal figure in the history of photography. Moving between Accra and London throughout his life, Barnor's photographic portraits visibly map societies in transition: Ghana winning independence from Britain, and London embracing the freedoms of the swinging sixties. He has said: 'I was lucky to be alive when things were happening ... when Ghana was going to be independent and Ghana became independent, and when I came to England the Beatles were around. Things were happening in the sixties, so I call myself Lucky Jim.' Barnor's photographs have been described as 'slices of history, documenting race and modernity in the post-colonial world', and he has been the subject of several major retrospectives over the last fifteen years. This concise survey in the Photofile series is the perfect overview of his multifaceted work.

In "Life in the New", Marius Svaleng Andresen delves into the complexity of urban development and its impact on people, with the ex-Yugoslavian district of Novi Beograd, Serbia, as a backdrop. How does the relationship between people and architecture change as cities grow and become denser? Through interviews with the area's inhabitants and photographs that blend documentary and art, Life in the New explores what lies beyond the facade of the brutalist and socialist modernistic buildings.Impressive architectural forms and complex geometries recede into the background to reveal everyday life in all its mundane glory: its little dramas, its melancholy, its discomforts, quirkiness, and humor. Every now and then, however, Andresen discovers moments of pure beauty, the fragile, unpremeditated poetry of the everyday that thrives amidst the formality of the architects' grand visions.
Architekturbild, the European Architectural Photography Prize, has been awarded on a two-yearly basis since 1995. Numerous synonyms are offered for the term "stopgap", such as replacement, emergency solution, transitional or interim solution. We all know such expedients from the private environment as well as from public life. The 28 rewarded series of EAP 2023 show stopgaps that make us smile tolerantly or thoughtful, they discover imaginative solutions, but they can also point out to shortcomings.
In 2011, prize-winning fiction writer Robert Dunn read a review of a new Fuji single-lens-reflex camera, and something clicked. Later that day, although the then-new Fuji X100 was as hard to get as the latest iPhone, he'd tracked one down. The next day he went out shooting photos for the first time since a brief dalliance with a cheap Nikon decades earlier.Little did Dunn know his life had changed. He'd always loved photography, and now he took his new camera with him everywhere he went. Photographs accumulated, and he began to put them into books. Soon he was making photobooks in a spirit similar to the novels he'd written, and those photobooks are now in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, and the New York Public Library. In Mirrors and Smoke, Dunn tells the full story of his discovery of photography, and the way it changed his life. It's a memoir of finding a new passion later in life. It's about the bountiful world of photobooks. Most of all, it's about the way Dunn has learned to see the essence of the world around him in ever greater and more meaningful detail, then take that empathic vision and turn it into art. As he writes: "I found out that being a photographer was vastly more interesting than not being one. That walking about trying to see, and feel, as much as possible, then render all that into images was a much richer life than not doing it."Mirrors and Smoke is a book for everyone who has already traced the magical path of becoming a photographer, as well as the simply photography-curious. Read it, then pick up your camera and go hit the streets. There's a bounty of beauty and revelation waiting for you out there.

He was born Alfredo Cocozza in Philadelphia's "Little Italy" on January 31, 1921. He died Mario Lanza in Rome on October 7, 1959. For most of his adult life his face and voice were known by millions the world over, but at his death only a few knew of his long and agonizing struggle against fear, insecurity, and distrust-a struggle that led him through nightmarish excesses to eventual self-destruction.Now Constantine Callinicos, for twelve years Mario's friend and musical director, tells the whole heartbreaking story of "that great talent consumed by cruel appetites." He tells of the orgies of eating that almost doubled Mario's weight in few months; of the terrible dieting by which Mario reduced as much as fifty pounds in a few weeks; of the marathon drinking bouts that canceled concerts and delayed film production; of the fits of violence, rage, and depression that kept friends and family fearing the worst; of Mario's desperate efforts to rehabilitate himself and realize the dream he had as a boy sitting beside the Victrola, listening for hours on end to the records of Enrico Caruso. It was to no avail, and "the American Caruso" came crashing down in ruin.Anecdotes of Mario's youth-warning episodes that at the time seemed no more than high-spirited pranks; his frustrating voice lessons; his kindness to "little people"; his hectic life on the concert trail; his courtship of Betty Hicks, and the depths to which their marriage descended; his discovery by Louis B. Mayer and the battle royal he made of his movie career; his difficult relationships with Edmond O'Brien, George London, Joe Pasternak, Kathryn Grayson, and Peter Lind Hayes-all these are here. Pulling no punches yet offering no service to sensationalism, THE MARIO LANZA STORY is a friend's last tribute to a great voice and a simple, generous man who could not live with himself.
