Most of us have little sense of how the stuff of our lives is actually manufactured and the places where that happens. Los Angeles is one of the premier industrial concentrations in the United States. This book shows the reader just what they ordinarily do not see. Krieger has visited hundreds of industrial sites in the Los Angeles area. He is invited in about a third of the time, and then he systematically photographs the people--at work--who make clothing, furniture, chemicals, metal parts, as well as those working at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and at the iconic County Hospital of Los Angeles. Up close, we discover the actual work that people do, and the places where they do that work.

One native's photographic survey of the long-stereotyped Appalachian regionFor the past 12 years, American photographer Stacy Kranitz has been making photographs in the Appalachian region of the United States in order to explore how photography can solidify or demystify stereotypes in a community where the medium has failed to provide an equitable depiction of its people. Born and raised in Appalachia, Kranitz approaches the region as a spectator, but not an outsider. Rather than reinforcing conventional views of Appalachia as a poverty-ridden region, or by selectively dwelling on positive aspects to offset problematic stereotypes, she insists that each of these options are equally damaging ways of looking at a place. In a foil-stamped clothbound hardcover with a design reminiscent of a topographical view of the region, this first monograph of Kranitz's work features 225 four-color plates. The photos are accompanied by excerpts from the weekly column "Speak Your Piece" from the Mountain Eagle newspaper based in Whitesburg, Kentucky. As the story of As it Was Give(n) To Me unfolds, Kranitz begins a new kind of narrative: one that examines our understanding of culture and place in a manner that is poised between notions of right and wrong.Stacy Kranitz (born 1976) was born in Kentucky and currently resides in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee. Dawoud Bey focuses on the landscape to create a portrait of the early African American presence in the United States. Renowned for his Harlem street scenes and expressive portraits, Dawoud Bey continues his ongoing series on African American history. Elegy brings together Bey's three landscape series to date-Night Coming Tenderly, Black  (2017); In This Here Place  (2021); and Stony the Road (2023)-elucidating the deep historical memory still embedded in the geography of the United States. Bey takes viewers to the historic Richmond Slave Trail in Virginia, where Africans were marched onto auction blocks; to the plantations of Louisiana, where they labored; and along the last stages of the Underground Railroad in Ohio, where fugitives sought self-emancipation. Essays by the exhibition's curator, Valerie Cassel Oliver, and scholars LeRonn P. Brooks, Imani Perry, and Christina Sharpe illuminate the work.
