New Hamburg was established in the early 1830s by William Scott. In 1834, cholera killed many of the original settlers of New Hamburg. A grist-mill built by Josiah Cushman about 1834 formed the nucleus around which a small community of Amish Mennonites and recent German immigrants developed. More German and Scottish settlers arrived in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The Grand Trunk railway arrived in the 1850s and the village became an important centre for milling and the production of farm machinery.HaysvilleHaysville, where the historic Huron Road crossed the Nith River, was settled by immigrants from the British Islea in the 1830s. The name Haysville came from its first official postmaster, John Hays, who was appointed in 1853. Before that time it had been called Jonesboro and later Wilmot Village.In 1827, Dr. William 'Tiger' Dunlop of the Canada Company opened the 95-mile corduroy Huron Road which connected the towns of Guelph and Goderich.

Every time I drive to my island residence, I stop there, visit one of my best friends and take a little photograph. When taken literally, a translation of the word 'photograph' means 'written light'. In this book I offer the reader/viewer a collection of 'textual illumination' divided into categories. The accompanying short short-stories-in some cases no more than a few words-are literary counter weights to the visual text.Rather than pretend to be a technophile and focus on how each image came about (aperture setting, focal length, lens type, film, etc.)-which is a conventional means of augmenting photographic images-I borrow instead Roland Barthes' take on photographs, and treat what the camera captured as something that cannot be repeated. In other words, the how of the photograph is not as important to me as what is made visible with light.Continuing with Barthes, conceptually these 'things written with light' are all punctum rather than studium. They represent what caught my eye over the years. Sometimes I framed my subjects consciously, at other times I only realized later the significance of a particular frame.

After photographing over one thousand weddings in my career as a photographer, I've learned a few things. I've learned things that have helped me book seventy weddings per season consistently. I've learned things that have helped me travel to every continent, including Antarctica. I also managed to do it all while being incredibly introverted and shy. Throughout this book, I will share what I've done to go from a struggling server at an Outback Steakhouse in Canada to someone who has created a full-time business in wedding photography. I'll also share my secrets for creating a full-time business that doesn't take over your life. For me, I value time freedom the most. Of course, Saturdays are for weddings, but you can customize the rest of your week.To define time freedom, it is being in control of when and where you work. Want to spend a few days at the cottage? No problem, you don't have to ask anyone for time off. Saw a cheap last-minute vacation package to a Caribbean island? Go for it, and answer your emails from the pool. Running your own business makes your life incredibly customizable and fun. The financial side is also good. If you're averaging $3000 - $4000 per wedding and photographing sixty weddings, your business makes $210,000 annually. Not bad for a job that also comes with time freedom and flexibility. With all of this said, not everything has been perfect along the way.My hope with this book is that I can save you some of those struggles I went through. Whether you're year zero into business or already photographing busy seasons, there will be something in this book for you.

The War of 1812 in North America between British Upper Canada and the United States is considered a side-line event of the Napoleonic War in Europe. Yet, it was a war here on the border between Canada and the United States in its own right. Britain won the War of 1812 by successfully defending its colonies against the invasion of the United States. Otherwise, Canada would be part of th U.S. now as an extension of America's ambition to make all of North America, American. The U.S. threw itself into this war because Britain used force to "impress" or kidnap Americans who became unwilling sailors on British ships. The first American attacks were disjointed and failed. Detroit was surrendered to the British in August 1812.British Major General Robert Ross marched into Washington on August 24, 1814 and had his men set fire to various government and military buildings, including the White House, called the Presidential Mansion at that time. It was a retaliation for the American destruction of Port Dover in Upper Canada. The Burning of Washington is the only time a foreign power has captured and occupied the capital of the United States. President James Madison, military officials and his government fled the city to a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland, known now as "the United States Capital for a Day." He spent the night at the house of Caleb Bentley and his Quaker family. The house still exists, known as the Madison House.Luckily, a heavy thunderstorm put out the fires in Washington putting weight to the argument that God was on the American side. The occupation of Washington lasted about 26 hours. The Treaty of Ghent was signed by British and American delegates on December 24, 1814, ending the War of 1812.

We were able to tour historical buildings that are being re-imagined as new adaptive reuse spaces. Venues that were once derelict are being transformed. Having lived in Hamilton for the past 50 years, I was amazed at places I had never seen, and never even heard about. It was a thrill to go with my sister, Shirley, and her husband, Ed to visit the sites presented in this book.Balfour House was a very popular venue with a long lineup to get inside. Scottish immigrant, grain merchant and accountant William Scott Burn (1797-1850) purchased the site in 1835. The house was built as a country home for William Scott Burn between 1836 and 1838, at a time when Hamilton was enjoying great prosperity.The Coppley Building played a key role in the textile trade. It is currently being renovated for a new use.In 1996, the Ontario Workers Arts and Heritage Centre opened in the restored and renovated Custom House as an interpretive center for workers' history and culture. Construction of the heritage Customs House with completed in 1860 in the Italianate style.We have traveled over the Lift Bridge many times over the years to go from Hamilton to Burlington. I never remembered seeing the lighthouse. The Beach Canal Light Station is a 17-metre tall (55-foot) tapered, circular, stone tower with an iron lantern, both completed in 1858, and an adjacent keeper's cottage built in 1857. James Crooks, a Hamilton merchant, urged the House of Assembly in 1823 to authorize the construction of a canal to link Lake Ontario to Burlington Bay. The canal was completed in early 1828 and a swing bridge was erected to span the canal.Glen Manor Estate at 22 Veevers Drive is a well-hidden heritage building located a short distance off Quigley Road. We lived on Quigley Road for twenty-five years but never knew this lovely building existed. It was a thrill to see the former home and seeing the new use it now has.The Erland Lee (Museum) Home is located on the ridge of the Niagara Escarpment in Stoney Creek. It was originally a farmhouse belonging to Erland and Janet Lee, and it where the first Women's Institute meeting was held in 1897. Short biographies of several extraordinary women are included in the story of the home.The Cotton Factory is an industrial complex formerly known as The Imperial Cotton Company Limited in the industrial north end of Hamilton. The complex is repurposed for small manufacturing and office space for creative professionals.Fading Memories of Home by Tom Wilson - a Residential School installation - was a unique presentation.

花蓮縣豐濱鄉的靜浦國小，地處人稱為「太陽的部落」的靜埔，距離花蓮75公里，距離台東也有90公里，位於花蓮縣豐濱鄉海岸線最南端，靜浦村依著秀姑巒溪南岸，與海口的奚卜蘭島相對。 靜浦村雖然有1000多人戶籍設此，但真正在這裡生活的大約只有300多人，居民多以捕漁為主業、農業為輔，過著自給自足的小型鄉村生活。 靜浦國小創立於民國47年，隸屬港口分校，最早是由茅草搭建而成的克難教室；民國57年全面實施九年國民義務教育，更名為「靜浦國民小學」。並被教育部列為「極偏鄉」等級的學校。2019年度的靜浦小學全校學生只有13位，形成教職員比學生多的特殊情況。 在一群熱情、極富教育使命的師長帶領下，透過創意的協同教學，讓靜浦國小的「光影偶戲」耀眼綻放，更讓這群孩子發現自己無窮的潛力，也對自我更有自信！ 讓我們來看看是什麼樣的環境孕育出這群光芒四射的孩子吧！

Exponer correctamente una fotografía en la noche no es algo sencillo. Ni mucho menos algo que pueda resolver automáticamente la mejor cámara del mercado. Precisamente porque la exposición es el origen de nuestra fotografía, es el Método para equilibrar los parámetros entre la apertura de diafragma, el tiempo de exposición y la sensibilidad del sensor para captar correctamente la luz existente en la escena a fotografiar; "dibujar" nuestra imagen con la Luz correcta y no solo eso, cuando la dominamos, resultará ser un factor creativo clave en la composición de nuestras fotografías.Seguro que te ha pasado, en algunas fotos nocturnas, el paisaje ha quedado bien expuesto pero el protagonista ha quedado demasiado oscuro (sub expuesto). Otras veces, para poder exponer correctamente al sujeto, se te quemaron elementos del fondo (sobre expuesto). Hay incluso ocasiones en las que ni los tonos oscuros de tu escena eran tan oscuros como querías ni las luces tan claras, y esa foto que veías en tu mente, en la realidad, te quedó ¡tan apagada!...
