This volume brings together renowned scholars and early career-researchers in mapping the ways in which European cinema ¿whether arthouse or mainstream, fictional or documentary, working with traditional or new mediä engages with phenomena of precarity, poverty, and social exclusion. It compares how the filmic traditions of different countries reflect the socioeconomic conditions associated with precarity, and illuminates similarities in the iconography of precarious lives across cultures. While some of the contributions deal with the representations of marginalized minorities, others focus on work-related precarity or the depictions of downward mobility. Among other topics, the volume looks at how films grapple with gender inequality, intersectional struggle, discriminatory housing policies, and the specific problems of precarious youth. With its comparative approach to filmic representations of European precarity, this volume makes a major contribution to scholarship on precarity and the representation of social class in contemporary visual culture.Watch our book talk with the editors Elisa Cuter, Guido Kirsten and Hanna Prenzel here: https://youtu.be/lKpD1NFAx2o

An illustrated journey through modern surf culture guided by the international surfers and communities that define its inclusive and passionate nature.Epic photography brings the stories of a unique group of global communities, and the surfers that represent them, to life.Told in their own words, some of the world’s most exciting professional and freestyle surfers—at different moments in their careers—introduce the influential figures, places, and waves that have shaped their lives, and their surfing. From Ireland’s rugged and unforgiving west coast to the famous beaches of Oahu, Hawaii, making stops across six continents along the way, Breitling provides a unique and unexpected window on the modern surf experience. The sport’s inclusive spirit is what inspired the iconic watch brand—a champion of surf culture and maker of timepieces for ocean pursuits since 1957—to highlight surf’s wider community with a book dedicated to the sport’s diverse characters, unexpected outposts, and collective culture.Based on interviews with surfers about the local communities they call home, The Breitling Book of Surfing is as much an in-depth travelogue as it is a beautiful photography book. It is for long-term surfing enthusiasts and newcomers alike, exploring the common values and passions that shape this diverse and dynamic global community connected by the ocean.

Since the late 1970s, the Canadian artist Jeff Wall has contributed significantly to establishing photography as an autonomous medium, and is regarded as one of the key vanguards of "staged photography". Referring to his approach as "near documentary", his images resemble documentary photographs in style and manner, but instead are meticulously composed, multilayered compositions. Synthesizing photography with elements from other art forms such as painting, cinema, and literature-in a complex mode that he calls "cinematography"-his deeply intellectual work stages fictional realities, memories and past experiences in an elaborate process. Featuring more than fifty works, this catalogue accompanying the large-scale exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler juxtaposes Wall's iconic backlit color transparencies with his more recent black and white photographs and color C-prints, revealing a variety of references in content and form. With his innovative approach to photography, JEFF WALL (*1946, Vancouver) has significantly shaped the medium and its status within contemporary art. After completing his postgraduate studies in art history in the mid-1970s, his new conceptual approach to large-format pictorial photography attracted attention. Each of his images is a unique composition that can take years to complete. Since the mid-1990s he has expanded his repertoire, working with traditional black-and-white prints and, more recently, inkjet color prints. He lives and works in Vancouver.

The vivid colours of Morocco as seen by master of colour photography Harry Gruyaert. When Harry Gruyaert first visited Morocco in 1972, it was love at first sight. On every return visit, he has tried to relive that initial feeling of enchantment, the splendid harmony between form and colour, people and nature. From the High Atlas mountains to the desert, from rural areas to the bustling streets of Marrakech and Essaouira, Gruyaert¿s photographs take us on a dreamlike cinematic journey through a reality that is nonetheless highly physical, its textures shaped by light and shadow. Each image has its own power and all of them reflect the importance of family, community and faith to the people of Morocco, as well as Gruyaert¿s own innate curiosity and desire to understand different realities.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo" ist dies Zaidis zweites Buch im Kehrer Verlag.
