If photos are messages, then Hans Fahrmeyer is one of the most prolificmessengers of today and of classic times. From his apprentice days oflearning his photography craft in the lost art of darkroom developing, youknow this man wrestle more out of an image than most emerging and longtime photographers. It's his use of lens, light, experience and passionwhich massages his images to an unexpected portrayal. But Mr. Fahrmeyer is also part sociologist , psychologist, comedian and lifecoach. Watching him in the studio or on location, he can either be the flyon the wall when he has to be, or the sorcerer, pulling out the best of thetalent in front of his lens. His latest book, Water Moves, is an illuminating dance of beautiful maleimages married with mirrors, water, sensuality and balance. There's ablend of powerful images with technical insight. The images becomeforceful yet arresting. He has produced a collection that mixes thecasualness of the snapshot with the artistry of classical photographer. His subjects capture the eye for their immediacy, beauty, and movement. His three previous books (Colors of Men, Between Men and Women, andBetween Men) reflect his stylization. But the new images in Water Movesare even more lively and stronger then the earlier ones. The photos are atimeless provocation as Hans demonstrates the gravity of his models intoan art form. Fahrmeyer's use of beautiful muscled men weaves with thereflective properties of water to create memorable masterpieces.Water Moves makes one yearn for an encore. In cinema, we know by thelast scene, there's a sequel planned. By the time you get to the last page, you're hoping for the release of more from Hans Fahrmeyer. Well done.

Opening the Gates of the Heart: Images that Heal & the Stories Behind Them, 2nd Edition is a "...magnificent gem of a book," according to reader, Norm Tedford, copyeditor. If you are looking for peace and freedom in a stressful and chaotic life, this is your book. Part I of the book, Opening the Gates of the Heart: A Journey of Healing, is incorporated in its entirety in the 2nd Edition. From Part I, you have the opportunity to explore feelings in response to photo/verse couplets. You begin to heal with gentle and compassionate, yet, powerful and empowering prose poetry that is thought-evoking, questioning, and soothing. Part II begins after Part I ends at the point that Promise of Peace is reached. Part II contains the stories behind the photo shoot of each gate. If you are looking for a book that brings you great growth and peace of mind, Opening the Gates of the Heart is that book. If you desire a book that is spiritual in nature, this is your book. In fact, the 1st Edition of the book, Opening the Gates of the Heart: A Journey of Healing, won a Silver Medal for World Peace in the 2018 Living Now Evergreen Book Awards. The 2nd Edition, with subtitle Images that Heal & the Stories Behind Them, won a Bronze Medal for Spiritual Healing in the 2022 Global Book Awards. There are forty-three couplets in this book, each consisting of a photograph of a wrought iron gate the author took, coupled with inspiring and thought-evoking prose poetry she wrote. This book is based on her life and the transformation she experienced as she grew from a thirty-year resentment, to peace, free from resentment. She now lives in a state of gratitude and positivity. The journey traveled by the author is mirrored in Opening the Gates of the Heart. You, too, can discover from this book the places of peace, gratitude, and positivity that she has uncovered. According to the author, Opening the Gates of the Heart is a Divine creation. This is because three-quarters of the prose poetry was written a few years before the gates were even discovered and photographed. Yet, the words in the verses give voice to the photograph with which the words are paired. For example, the first couplet with photo Webs of Fear, was named this because of the scene of spider webs covering the spires of a gate. It, along with twenty other images, was titled so the image could be framed and sold to a gallery. One morning while journaling, the author wrote, "I have spent a lifetime spinning webs of terror and shame between the spires that stand as sentinels to my heart." When she wrote this, she almost fell off of her chair! These powerful words gave voice to the photograph, Webs of Fear, that had just been titled two weeks earlier! This discovery led the author to search her ten journals for verses that were meaningful and spiritual in nature. Then she paired verbatim the words with appropriate images. In fact, nearly three-quarters of the book's forty-three verses were located in journals and gave voice to corresponding images. Furthermore, the words were written in the author's journal a few years before she discovered and photographed the gates. That is the magic of this book - words of great depth came during journaling sessions, and several years later, photographs showed up that portrayed the words in action. This is the work of the Divine. May it lead to your peace of mind and freedom of heart.

Under Napoleon I, the French Army conquered most of Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Professionalising again from the Revolutionary forces and using columns of attack with heavy artillery support and swarms of pursuit cavalry the French army under Napoleon and his marshals was able to outmanoeuvre and destroy the allied armies repeatedly until 1812. Napoleon introduced the concept of all arms Corps, each one a traditional army 'in miniature', permitting the field force to be split across several lines of march and rejoin or to operate independently. The Grande Armée operated by seeking a decisive battle with each enemy army and then destroying them in detail before rapidly occupying territory and forcing a peace.

The last clear German victory in World War II occurred in the last days of April 1945 during the defense, loss and subsequent recovery of the Saxon city of Bautzen. On that occasion, when all was lost, the remnants of once powerful German units, such as the Panzer Divions Hermann Göring, Brandeburg or Grossdeutschland, inflicted a total defeat on the proud Soviet-Polish units, more robust and better armed, that supported the Red Army advance towards the capital of the Reich. This text tells the story of the events that took place in that city, the capital of Upper Lusatia, just south of the German capital. The high efficiency of the German soldiers made the difference with a real state of an army by then in decay and with no more fuel, showing how the fighting spirit was kept high until the end thanks to the concrete possibility of stopping the Soviets, even if only for a few hours or days, in their overwhelming advance to allow the evacuation of the greatest number of Germans people towards the West of the country. An innovative work this one by Gil Martínez, that will certainly occupy, together with the previous one already published in Breslau 1945, a special place in the library of all those who are interested in the military history of the last terrible world conflict.

Camera: Body, Lenses, Filters, Tripods, BagsCamera BodyThe camera body is the heart of the camera. It houses all of the camera's components, including the photosensitive sensor, photographic memory, focus mechanism, shutter, and image processing unit.Camera bodies come in a variety of types, each with its own unique features and benefits. The basic types are discrete single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, mirrorless cameras, and compact cameras.DSLR CamerasDSLR cameras have always been popular because they allow you to take high-quality photos and videos. In DSLR cameras, a small mirror and prism redirect the light from the lens to the body's viewfinder. This allows the photographer to see exactly how the photo will look.DSLR cameras are typically larger, heavier, and more expensive. They are a good choice for more experienced photographers, as they offer more capabilities.Mirrorless CamerasMirrorless cameras have begun to emerge as an alternative to DSLR cameras. They are typically smaller, lighter, and less expensive than DSLR cameras. They can take high-quality photos and videos just like DSLR cameras.Compact CamerasCompact cameras are the smallest and most portable type of camera. They are a good choice for casual photographers who want to take photos without a lot of equipment.LensesThe lens is the part of the camera that focuses the light and creates the image. There are many different types of lenses available, each with its own unique characteristics. The most common type of lens is the zoom lens. Zoom lenses allow you to change the focal length, which affects the field of view and magnification.Other types of lenses include prime lenses, macro lenses, and wide-angle lenses.FiltersFilters are accessories that can be attached to the front of the lens to change the look of the image. There are many different types of filters available, each with its own unique effect. Some of the most common types of filters include neutral density filters, polarizing filters, and UV filters.TripodsA tripod is a three-legged stand that supports the camera. Tripods are essential for taking sharp photos in low-light conditions or when using a long exposure.BagsA camera bag is a case that protects your camera and lenses.

In this first volume devoted to Italian armoured cars, we begin by presenting the earliest and oldest ones. In the beginning, these were mainly models that remained at prototype level, or vehicles produced in very low numbers. Of the many, we have devoted some space to the oldest blindos such as the Bianchi, which was already present in the Italo-Turkish conflict, or the Fiat-Terni Tripoli born in 1918. We then move on to the legend of the Lancia 1Z, a successful vehicle that was born in the First World War and remained operational until 1945! It was a massive vehicle, entirely of Italian design. To share much of the book we close with the Fiat 611 armoured car built in 1932, as was often the case with Ansaldo at the time, and specifically designed for colonial use. It operated mainly in the A.O.I. together with its older sister Lancia 1Z and fast tanks. Over twenty plates of colour profiles by the author complete this book.

The M11/39 tank was the transitional tank between the L3 fast tank and the M 13/40. The M11/39 can be considered the first Italian medium tank, with a weight of 11 tonnes and armament that consisted of a 37 mm cannon in the casemate and two Breda Mod. 38 8 mm machine guns in the turret. One of the weak points was the low-powered engine, the cannon placed in the casemate and the lack of radio equipment. Unsuitable for desert warfare. Despite its weaknesses, the M11/39 represented an important step forward in the history of Italian armoured vehicles, as it paved the way for the medium tank family, which was used throughout the war.

A diagnosis of cancer may be one of the most difficult pieces of news anyone could hear. From one moment to the next, life-changing. The beginning of a long journey whose destination cannot be predicted. While the stages of treatment may be similar for many patients, each person's response will be different. Cancer infiltrates, not just bone and tissue, but the entire lives of patients and their families. Caroline Seymour's photographs bear witness to what had to be endured by their subjects. Challenging though some of them may be, the position of an onlooker is a privileged one. The intention is not to sensationalise, but to show the beauty in these primal wounds within this most human and desperate of situations, as well as the skill, dedication and compassion of the doctors attempting to heal them. The photographs are juxtaposed with details of paintings and sculpture from UK national collections which place the work within a broader context. The religious references are not incidental; they are significant in that they emphasise both the humanity of the patients and their suffering. These photographs celebrate the beauty of the human body, of the art of surgery, of the care given by the surgeons to cure a deadly disease. They are testament to the courage and integrity of all involved.

Christer Strömholm is recognised as one of the major figures of 20th century European photography. Strömholm captured his surroundings in black‐and‐white images that display his integrity, understated humour and a highly personal aesthetic. With an unmistakable sensitivity to human suffering, based on his personal experience, he took photography in a new direction. Sean O'Hagan, writing in The Guardian, has described him "as the father of Swedish photography both for his abiding influence and for his role as a teacher." Born in Stockholm, Strömholm discovered photography via graphic art in the late 1940s. During the 1950s and 60s he lived much of the time in Paris, where he developed his particular style of street photography. It was here that he produced his most famous work, Les Amies de Place Blanche, a tribute to a group of young transsexuals with whom he became friends and whose lives he shared over many months. They were very much outsiders, struggling to survive, with their main source of income being from prostitution. In these legendary photographs, shot at night in available light, Strömholm merged street photography and portraiture, depicting them as the close friends theywere, in intimate and honest portraits far from the spectacular or speculative. Les Amies de Place Blanche raises profound issues about sexuality and gender; and, in Strömholm's own words, "it is about obtaining the freedom to choose one's own life and identity."

Paddy Summerfield's 'The Beginnings Of Eternity', three years in the making, is his first published colour essay. It starts as an apparent travelogue: traffic and hedges, winter moon and July fields are glimpsed from a moving car. This repeated journey shifts through daylight and changing seasons, looping around local lanes and streets, then entering domestic spaces, into a final garden brilliance. Summerfield has always been a story-teller; in 'The Beginnings Of Eternity' he has a new narrative device - an idiosyncratic colour code that creates the rhythm of the essay, and signals the unfolding of Summerfield's vision of a journey that is both metaphorical and spiritual, towards a peace beyond understanding. After twenty-five years of urging by his friend, photographer John Goto, Summerfield finally acquired a limited, lo-tech digital camera, so limited that the pictures yielded unforeseen (and usually unrepeatable) vagaries of flare, colour shift, distorted perspective, and other oddness. The prismatic shards and the unpredictable effects intensify Summerfield's photography, yet viewers familiar with his work will recognise the composites, the unfocused glimpses, the pattern of echoes that have appeared within his black and white work over decades.

The lives and habitats of two majestic bird species are shared through striking space, aerial, and surface photographs to artfully convey the fragile elegance of life on Earth.New perspectives can inspire us to think differently about our place in the universe. The first photos of Earth from space showed the home of all known life as a small “blue marble” in a vast darkness and are thought by many to have inspired the environmental movement. For Dr. Roberta L. Bondar, the first female Canadian astronaut and the world’s first neurologist in space, the rare perspective she enjoyed aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery enhanced her reverence for the world we share with non-human life— especially birds, the only animals also able to fly vast distances across the globe. In Space for Birds: Patterns and Parallels of Beauty and Flight, Bondar, also an accomplished professional nature and landscape photographer, focuses her lens on two international species: the endangered Whooping Crane, which migrates from its boreal nesting grounds in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park to the seaside abundance of its winter habitat in Texas; and the near-threatened Lesser Flamingo, which is seen in dazzling pink flocks on and above East African Rift Valley soda lakes. Photos from the International Space Station convey the continental scale of these birds’ travels, and Bondar’s aerial and surface photos, accompanied by insights both scientific and personal, offer intimate glimpses of their daily lives and unique behaviours. While these birds lead different lives on opposite sides of the globe, they share, with each other and with us, an imperative to survive and a reliance on Earth’s fragile ecosystems. This book complements a travelling photographic exhibit, Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive.

"Splendid. This monumentally intimate collection journeys into the diverse soul of the nation. Moments of wit and affection contrast with an austere and formal observation of the human desire to settle, celebrate, and survive. A joyous and inspired book full of moments that are oddly resonant and deeply moving."—Atom EgoyanA subversive look at the liminal locations and transitional moments that make up the Canadian unconscious and the Not-So-True North. In this unvarnished look at Canada, renowned photographer Geoffrey James directs his gaze to the in-between spaces and forgotten places that resist the idea of a cohesive national identity. With an equable eye, James documents the ephemeral and the monumental: a demolition derby in Quebec, how an inmate at Kingston Penitentiary has decorated his cell, the Dickensian side door of Massey Hall in Toronto. The photographs in this collection celebrate the everyday while meditating on the issues James's adopted home faces: the bifurcation of rural and urban, rapid growth and increasing inequality, and its journey toward truth and reconciliation. Linked by views taken from train windows from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, James’s unofficial portrait of Canada brings into sharp relief the unfinished business of the nation as it lurches into the next century.Canadian Photographs includes a conversation between the photographer and Peter Galassi, former Chief Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art.

Both commercial and personal commissions and stories reveal the man behind the persona. Was Sir Edwin Lutyens Britain's Greatest Architect?- Featuring many previously unseen pictures- Includes the stories behind the artwork- Newly commissioned photography by Dylan ThomasSir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was one of the great architects of the twentieth century. His Edwardian country houses, surrounded by rhapsodic gardens, beguiled clients with their romance and wit. After 1918, the war memorials that he created symbolised a grieving nation's sense of loss. In the new capital of the British Raj, New Delhi, the Viceroy's House or Rashtrapati Bhavan had a footprint bigger than Versailles. His unfinished Liverpool Cathedral would have rivalled St Peter's in Rome.Intensely shy, Lutyens hid his personality behind puns and jokes - and yet he could be called 'part mystic', a reference to an inner profundity. Rich in stories, this entertaining and stylish short biography is a major new study incorporating fresh research which shows this most charismatic of architects in a new light.
