Anfang 2014 schenkte mir mein Vater eine Polaroid-Kamera, die schon seit Jahren ungenutzt in seinem Büro herumlag und eigentlich weggeworfen werden sollte. Die Polaroid Macro 5 war ursprünglich für die Zahn- und Tatortfotografie gedacht, aber meine eigene Verwendung für das klobige Gerät war zunächst unklar. Im Laufe der nächsten Monate kristallisierte sich durch Experimentieren und Ausprobieren nach und nach eine mögliche Verwendung heraus. Die Kamera erwies sich schnell als fähig, ein Gefühl einzufangen, das in einigen meiner (damals) früheren Bilder vorhanden war, die ich am meisten mochte, die ich aber nicht ohne weiteres nachstellen konnte. Die früheren Bilder hielten gewöhnliche Materialien oder Motive fest, aber die Bilder wirkten schwer fassbar und abstrakt - verwandelt durch die Inszenierung, den Rahmen und den Prozess des Fotografierens.

Dieses Buch ist eine Reiseerzählung der anderen Art. Der Betrachter reist beim Lesen durch die Zeit und bleibt dabei am gleichen Ort, dem Dorf Berka in Thüringen. Das Dorf wurde von drei Fotografen einer Familie über 70 Jahre - zwischen 1950 und 2022 - fotografisch begleitet. Es handelt sich um ein ungewöhnliches, mehreren Zufällen geschuldetes Projekt, das viel erzählt über dieses Land, das Dorf, seine Menschen und wie sich die Dinge so entwickelt haben.Zufall: Der Müllermeister von Berka, Ludwig Schirmer ist begeisterter Amateurfotograf, der nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg neben der Arbeit als Müller noch Zeit findet das Leben im Dorf und auf dem Feld in Bilder zu fassen, die an andere große deutsche Fotografen seiner Zeit erinnern. Zufall: Die Familie Schirmer bekommt 1950 eine Tochter, Ute, die ihre Kindheit in Berka verbringt.Zufall: Ute heiratet 1973 Werner, den sie am Gymnasium in Oranienburg kennenlernt. Beide studieren später an der HGB Leipzig und Werner macht 1977/78 sein Diplom über Utes Heimatdorf, Berka. Zufall: Werner bekommt 1997 einen Auftrag vom STERN, die von Helmut Kohl versprochenen "Blühenden Landschaften" zu fotografieren und geht 1998 noch einmal nach Berka zum Fotografieren. 2001 stirbt Ludwig Schirmer, der in den sechziger Jahren zu einem der bekanntesten Werbefotografen der DDR geworden war und in seinem Nachlass tauchen zufällig einige wenige Abzüge und viele Negative seiner Berka-Bilder auf. Ute Mahler und Werner Mahler machen in ihrer Dunkelkammer erste Abzüge und ihnen wird klar welche künstlerische und dokumentarische Qualität diese Bilder haben. 2021/2022, kein Zufall mehr: Ute Mahler fährt wiederholt nach Berka und portraitiert die Jugendlichen des Dorfes, die noch nicht einmal geboren waren, als Werner Mahler das letzte mal dort fotografierte. Es sind die Ur- oder Ururenkelinnen der Menschen, die Ludwig Schirmer in den fünfziger Jahren kannte und portraitierte.2022/2023, das vollkommen analog und schwarzweiss fotografierte Langzeitprojekt ist abgeschlossen und die Idee des Buches, die schon einige Jahre gereift ist, nimmt erste Formen an. Die Schriftstellerin Jenny Erpenbeck, die Journalistin und Freundin Anja Maier, der Soziologe Steffen Mau (Humboldt Universität Berlin) und der amerikanische Fotohistoriker Gary Van Zante (MIT, Boston) beschreiben den Ort, die Zeit, die Menschen, die Fotografen und Fotografien.
