In addition to exhibiting the photographs, there would be a call for writers to submit thoughts inspired by viewing the images. The idea of commemorating the collaboration in a book seemed like a natural fit and a fantastic way to provide an opportunity for writers of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities to be seen and appreciated. In order to maintain uninfluenced experiencing of the images, captions and facts about the photos and Eastern State Penitentiary itself are not included in the book.

"A Victorian Society" is a book about early photography and photographers, told against the backdrop of life in what was to become the most productive cotton spinning town in the world.In 1867, when photography was still in its infancy, a group of photographers from Oldham and District met at the Hare and Hounds Inn, Yorkshire Street, and founded the Oldham Photographic Society and some of these men would provide the early photographic studios in the town. The photographic portrait had been accessible only to the wealthy but now it was beginning to be affordable by all but the poorest in society.One evening each week, the early photographers of Oldham met to share knowledge and to collect photographs in their album, which has mostly lain unseen in the society's archives for over 100 years. "A Victorian Society" has more than 300 black and white photographs and illustrations, many of which are published here for the first time.The book first traces the early days of photography through the lives of the pioneers, in France and Britain, whose work led to the creation of the permanent photographic image, paving the way for all professional and amateur photography. After the Lancashire cotton famine, the late 1860s marked the beginning of the most exciting period of Oldham's history. The author examines the rise of the town to become one of the most important cotton spinning and textile engineering towns in the world and follows its progress through phenomenal growth to eventual decline.The Victorian age was the "Age of Invention" and the Oldham Photographic Society reflects that through its early members, many of whom rose to prominence in the world of photography, commerce and manufacturing, some of their businesses achieving national and international importance. Using genealogy sources and historic publications, the author researched the lives of many of the society's Victorian members and brings them together in a social group not studied before. In this book, Hong Kong is seen as a labyrinth, a postmodern site of capitalist desires, and a panoptic space both homely and unhomely. The author maps out various specific locations of the city through the intertwined disciplines of street photography, autoethnography and psychogeography. By meandering through the urban landscape and taking street photographs, this form of practice is open to the various metaphors, atmospheres and visual discourses offered up by the street scenes. The result is a practice-led research project informed by both documentary and creative writing that seeks to articulate thinking via the process of art-making. As a research project on the affective mapping of places in the city, the book examines what Hong Kong is, as thought and felt by the person on the street. It explores the everyday experiences afforded by the city through the figure of the flâneur wandering in shopping districts and street markets. Through hisown street photographs and drawing from the writings of Byung-Chul Han, Walter Benjamin and Michel de Certeau, the author explores feelings, affects, and states of mind as he explores the city and its social life.

L'espace interstellaire ne diffère de l'espace intermoléculaire que parce que nous sommes placés entre les deux et que nous mesurons leurs rapports. La notion de temps qui est engendrée par celle de l'espace n'est pas plus exacte sous son premier aspect continu. Il peut y avoir de l'infini entre les moments d'un temps divisé à l'infini. On perçoit très bien que le temps psychologique (et le temps astronomique se mesure par des différences de position dans l'espace) est essentiellement variable. Notre notion du temps se transforme du sauvage à l'homme civilisé, de l'enfant à l'adulte, du rêve à la veille...

In January 1967, the jazz composer and pianist Carla Bley (1936-2023) received a poem in the mail from a writer-friend, Paul Haines. As she later said, it "fit mysteriously with a piece of music I was working on, Detective Writer Daughter. When I told [Paul] how amazing this was, we decided to write an opera together, an overstatement by two people who didn't have to watch their words." In 1971, the result of this collaboration-the more than two-hour "chronotransduction" (as Bley came to call it) Escalator Over the Hill-was released. Featuring over 50 musicians and 20 vocalists such as Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Roswell Rudd, Gato Barbieri, John McLaughlin, Jack Bruce and Linda Ronstadt, Escalator was named Jazz Album of the Year by Melody Maker in 1972 and awarded the Grand Prix du Disque the year after that.Included with the LP was a catalogue of pictures of the musicians and recording sessions made by the photographers Tod Papageorge (who also sings on the album), Garry Winogrand and Paul McDonough. McDonough was also responsible for pasting the edited prints to paper boards and arranging the final layout of the catalogue. A selection of those photographs and boards, including design indications and notes, is highlighted in And It's Again: Carla Bley's Escalator Over the Hill, along with the composer's extraordinary narrative-chronicle of the making and recording of the album, Accomplishing Escalator.Co-produced with ECM Records, Munich
