Reading Visual Investigations delves into a new discipline-visual investigations-in which architecture intersects with advocacy, journalism, and law in the pursuit of justice and accountability. This publication presents insights into the current discourse within the emergent field, illustrated by intriguing case studies from around the world. It highlights the role of architecture as a key area of expertise that defines this evolving practice.Eight experts from the fields of digital and spatial analysis, human rights, legal studies, investigative journalism, and forensic analysis offer critical, scientifically grounded discourse on the topic through essays and interviews. The book's contributors examine a range of methods and architectural tools employed in visual investigations and their impact on human rights and legal processes. Additionally, the involved investigators and the editors provide an in-depth analysis of international research by introducing seven case studies and presenting their methods, content, and conclusions in diverse formats, including maps, films, models, and interactive platforms used to expose human rights violations.Reading Visual Investigations is an essential resource for anyone interested in understanding the dynamic and evolving practice of visual investigations. It provides practical insights that integrate traditional reporting with digital forensics and the analysis of visual evidence. Beyond Ruins: Reimagining Modernism explores the potential of modern architecture renovation in the Global South as a catalyst for self-determination and community-building.The volume presents case studies, conversations, and visual essays by international experts in architecture, governance, regenerative design, contemporary art, philosophy, and gaming. These contributions examine recent heritage renovation as a scaffold for local coauthorship of the built environment, and as a way of coming to terms with the region's postcolonial nation-building projects of the mid-twentieth century. The starting point for the book's contributions is the Oscar Niemeyer Guest House renovation project in Tripoli, Lebanon, by the Beirut-based East Architecture Studio-a recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The main focus here was to uncover the history of the site and to foreground the political climates of such postcolonial nation-building projects. The publication addresses contemporary heritage challenges, questions renovation trends, and reveals gaps in historicization and archiving. It reflects on the need for new architectural operations due to a lack of infrastructure and emphasizes the materiality of renovation projects, encouraging discussions on craft, manufacturing, growth, aging, and hybridity.Beyond Ruins: Reimagining Modernism presents architecture as a process of mutual translation-listening to, interacting with, and supporting cultural practices. It offers a platform for critique and possibility, while considering preservation as an imaginative futurist practice.Edited by Raafat Majzoub and Nicolas Fayad, with contributions by Amale Andraos, Elias and Yousef Anastas, George Arbid, Aaron Betsky, Sibel Bozdogan, Costica Bradatan, Aziza Chaouni, Marco Costantini, Civil Architecture, Farrokh Derakhshani, EAST Architecture Studio, Fadi El Abdallah, Farès el-Dahdah, Nicolas Fayad, Sarah Mineko Ichioka, Charles Kettaneh, Bernard Khoury, Raafat Majzoub, Noura Al Sayeh Holtrop, Sumayya Vally, Ana Tostões, Nader Tehrani, Jozef Wouters, and Akram Zaatari.

Major interdisciplinary study of medieval church porches, bringing out their importance and significance. The church porches of medieval England are among the most beautiful and glorious aspects of ecclesiastical architecture; but in comparison with its stained glass, for example, they have been relatively little studied. This book, the first detailed study of them for over a century, gives new insights into this often over-looked element. Focussing on the rich corpus of late-medieval East Anglian porches, it begins with two chapters placing them in a broad cultural outline and their context; it then moves on to consider their commissioning and design, their architecture and ornamentation, their use and their meaning. This book will appeal to all those interested in church fabric and function. Dr HELEN LUNNON, an Honorary Researcher in the School of Art, Media and American Studies at the University of East Anglia, is Head of Learning at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.

Raw, personal and political, John Scott: Firestorm; presents an artist's searing critique of modernity’s capacity for industrial warfare and the machines that enable it.Scott produced paintings, drawings, and sculptures of what he called “engines of history,” the hyper-masculine military and civilian weapons of the past half century. Surveillance aircraft, B-52 and stealth bombers, tanks, cruise missiles and rockets, as well as handguns, muscle cars, and motorcycles forcefully imprint themselves upon the viewer through Scott’s fierce mark-making and large, rough sculptural gestures. Humanoid rabbits —often surrounded by numbers that fail to add up—represent those threatened by such technologies. The dichotomy between the death-dealing weaponry of the nuclear era and the vulnerability of human beings lies at the core of Scott’s work.Scott (1949–2022) deployed an idiosyncratic graphic language to represent apocalyptic machines and the imbalances of power, working in the tradition of Francisco Goya, Käthe Kollwitz, Nancy Spero, and others. Scott grew up in Windsor, Ontario, across the river from Detroit, Michigan. Like many Canadian artists, writers, and intellectuals of his time, Scott was a close watcher of America, with a front-row seat on a sometimes rogue nation. Stylistically, his work is close to that of his contemporaries Jean-Michel Basquiat and William Kentridge, showing a kindred ferocity of mark making and dark urgency.John Scott: Firestorm accompanies the exhibition of the same name organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, curated by esteemed Canadian art scholar John O’Brian. It is the first major exhibition of Scott’s work to focus on his imagery of machines and on modernity’s capacity for industrial war—a body of work as meaningful today as it was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This publications features more than 100 of Scott’s works, a detailed biography, and new critical writings on the artist.

A beautifully illustrated history of Indigenous tattooing practices around the worldTattooing within Indigenous communities is a time-honored practice that binds the tattoo recipient to a deeply felt collective history. More than mere decoration, tattoos are a visual language of the skin, embodying cultural values, ancestral ties, and spiritual beliefs. Indigenous Tattoo Traditions captures ancient tribal tattooing practices and their contemporary resurgence, highlighting a beautiful aspect of humanity’s shared cultural heritage, one mark at a time.Transporting readers through history, Lars Krutak explores the art and customs of tattooing across numerous ancestral lands, including Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, Greenland, the Arctic, Polynesia, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Siberia. He illustrates how tattoos function as a form of writing that defines and structures community life, performing as rites of passage, symbols of rank, and signs of marital or religious devotion, among other facets of culture. We are introduced to the heavily tattooed Birdmen of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), the Li women of China’s Hainan Island with their elaborate facial and body tattoos, and innovative cultural tattoo practitioners who are rebuilding a skin marking legacy for future generations to come. With numerous images published for the first time and an illuminating foreword by cultural historian Sean Mallon, Indigenous Tattoo Traditions opens a window onto one of the world’s most vibrant yet misunderstood mediums of human expression.
