  • av Rose Marie (University College London) San Juan

Nothing excited early modern anatomists more than touching a beating heart. In his 1543 treatise, Andreas Vesalius boasts that he was able to feel life itself through the membranes of a heart belonging to a man who had just been executed, a comment that appears near the woodcut of a person being dissected while still hanging from the gallows. In this highly original book, Rose Marie San Juan confronts the question of violence in the making of the early modern anatomical image. Engaging the ways in which power operated in early modern anatomical images in Europe and, to a lesser extent, its colonies, San Juan examines literal violence upon bodies in a range of civic, religious, pedagogical, and "exploratory" contexts. She then works through the question of how bodies were thought to be constituted-systemic or piecemeal, singular or collective-and how gender determines this question of constitution. In confronting the issue of violence in the making of the anatomical image, San Juan explores not only how violence transformed the body into a powerful and troubling double but also how this kind of body permeated attempts to produce knowledge about the world at large. Provocative and challenging, this book will be of significant interest to scholars across fields in early modern studies, including art history and visual culture, science, and medicine.

The French architects and winners of the 2021 Pritzker Prize, present their work through three concepts:free space: The ideal space would invariably be generous of size, efficiency and comfort. This pre-determined aim is a fundamental principle for Lacaton and Vassal: it is no longer up for debate, and it forms the basis of all their projects. transformation: Never demolish, always add, transform, extend. Apply free space to existing structures and situations. Treat the place as an existing prerequisite. Take the values of the place as it is and integrate them into the project, never in opposition to it. habiter: Life, uses, making the space one's own. Making the others and the inhabited space tangible through the frames of Karine Dana's films, showing the life and inhabitants in nine built works by the architects.Text: Enrique Walker, Anne Lacaton, Jean-Philppe Vassal.

From one of Australia's leading contemporary artists, The Rites of When pays tribute to ritual practices of seasonal renewal, both ancient and contemporary. It documents the artist's monumental, sevenchannel video installation created for the Tank at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Angelica Mesiti is one of Australia's leading contemporary artists. Celebrated for her distinctive moving-image and sound-based works, the Sydney-born, Paris-based artist explores individual and communal forms of expression, ranging from sign language, choreographic gesture, Morse code and whistling to ancestral musical traditions, body percussion and communication between nonhuman species. The Rites of When, Mesiti's first solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, pays tribute to ritual practices of seasonal renewal, both ancient and contemporary. The monumental, seven-channel video installation - comprising two sweeping movements that conjure hibernal (winter) and aestival (summer) solstice celebrations - is an immersive reflection upon the age-old and continuing relationship between humankind, the natural world and the cosmos. With choreographed performance, new music compositions and soaring aerial views, The Rites of When offers a vision of an enmeshed world and the renewal of hope. Published in association with the eponymous exhibition, Angelica Mesiti: The Rites of When documents the second major commission for the postindustrial Tank space at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Richly illustrated with video stills from Mesiti's cinematic video installation, it features a new essay by Isobel Parker Philip and interview by Beatrice Gralton, cocurators of the exhibition. An additional visual section illuminates the influences that shaped the work.
