In the early 20th century, copying, cutting and pasting entered the Western European avant-garde through collage and readymades, as artists employed found objects and ephemera to create new meaning from existing materials. This book explores how this practice has evolved in contemporary art today, looking at its important and distinct outcomes in the practice of artists such as Andrea Fraser, Douglas Gordon, Isaac Julien, Christian Marclay, Amie Siegel and Christopher Williams. It analyses the pivotal consequences of the interrelationships these artists establish between fragments of culture, from television and film, to internet culture and their artwork's site, where the verb to "sample" has become deeply tied to digital music editing, writing, image production, database searches and social media. Samples take many forms: quotations of other cultural works; replicas of other objects; reenactments of works by other artists; or fragments that are quite literally cut or removed from other works of art, design, or media. Via Bouman's analysis, we visualise the shared frameworks of meaning that underpin these multifaceted, multidimensional and medium-fluid works. Focussing on 'action' and 'form', the book discusses the relationship between the referent and reference, and the citational labor that any sample performs. The distributive sense of authorship that emerges places the audience in a new position of significance.Concepts and themes discussed include: queer and race theory, postproduction and mirroring, mobile site specificity, now-time and dragging, and gender fluidity and Drag King performance, centring sampling as a key form of 21st-century art. With novel insights into the conceptual, material, and aesthetic dimensions of sampling in contemporary culture, the book provides a new critical framework for understanding the complex implications of this practice, as a vital resource for researchers in contemporary art practice and visual culture.

"I keep coming back to water scenes. I keep coming back to lakes, rivers and oceans. I like to explore the interaction of people with water. Water can disarm even the most armed of facades. A reconstruction of the first exhibition of world art history in Germany, organized by the historian Karl Lamprecht in 1914. By the standards of its day, the exhibition of world art history was an extraordinarily cosmopolitan and comparative project, yet it also had a political agenda. Karl Lamprecht studied and presented works of visual art as records of the psychological development of entire cultures-a development which, he believed, followed the same pattern as the mental growth of a child. Juxtaposing mature works of art with children's drawings from around the globe, his exhibition deployed new ways of thinking about historical times to infantilize colonial subjects as perpetual pupils and dependents. This book examines for the first time how Lamprecht's public exhibition and academic research on art jointly contributed not only to colonial representations but also to concrete designs for domination. Situating this watershed 1914 exhibition within the wider context of German historical scholarship, scientific racism, and international politics on the eve of the First World War, the book revises the genealogy of "global art history" while intervening in contemporary debates around Eurocentrism, the universal museum, and Germany's colonial past.

An essay that deftly deconstructs the history of 'Islamic architecture', challenging colonial narratives and promoting an inclusive understanding of Islam. In The Music of Stones, Sohail Hashmi delves into the intricate history and misconceptions surrounding Islamic architecture and culture. Challenging colonial and orientalist narratives, Hashmi reveals that iconic elements like domes and minarets were not originally part of early Islamic structures but later additions influenced by various cultures, primarily Persian and Turkish. Through engaging anecdotes and thought-provoking theories, Hashmi deconstructs the monolithic view of Islamic culture, emphasizing its rich and diverse heritage shaped by Sufi, Central Asian, and other regional influences. He highlights the importance of historical context and the dangers of oversimplifying complex cultural identities. The Music of Stones invites readers to reconsider the architectural and cultural legacy of Islam, advocating for a more inclusive and evidence-based understanding that transcends reductive labels and celebrates the richness of its diverse traditions.

A gorgeously illustrated look at snuff boxes and bottles carved from the Brazilian coquilla nut reveals a larger history of commerce, cultural exchange, and power in the Atlantic world.  Portraits in a Nutshell showcases intricately carved snuff boxes and bottles sculpted from coquilla nuts between the seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. Both utilitarian and decorative, these containers represent a stunning diversity of artistic approaches and subject matter. Just as the use of snuff crossed lines of geographic origin and racial and social hierarchy, so too, did the objects that contained it. As a result, coquilla nut snuff boxes and bottles present a rich material archive of the Atlantic world and the central role of Indigenous and Black histories within it. Coquilla nuts, the fruit of the Brazilian palm, are just three or four inches long. This book demonstrates how, soon after Europeans and Africans first found a use for the nut in Brazil as an object that could both hold snuff and be decorative, it spread throughout the Atlantic world. Today, coquille nut snuff boxes and bottles are an understudied art form that, despite the objects' small size, encapsulates an early modern history of transoceanic movement and creativity. The carvings depict animals and fantastical creatures drawn from throughout the Atlantic world, scenes of religious and courtly life, portraits of political and military leaders, abolitionists and activists, and people at the margins of colonial society.   Over 250 detailed photographs of snuff bottles and boxes not only illustrate the exceptional skill of their creators but also illustrate the story of millions of Africans transported to Brazil during centuries of the transatlantic slave trade. The text demonstrates the interconnectedness of the Atlantic world, the movements of peoples and ideas, and the commercial exchange of goods and cultural and material objects in Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and North America.

The personal journey of a designer and scientist through the field of fiber-polymer composites. Composites in Structural Engineering and Architecture is about the author's twenty-five-year journey as a pioneer, scientist, designer, and lecturer in the field of fiber-polymer composites as applied to structural engineering and architecture. Composites are construction materials that offer unique properties when compared to conventional materials such as reinforced concrete or steel. In addition to their excellent mechanical properties, their physical properties- including low thermal conductivity, transparency, and color-allow structural building physics and architectural functions to be integrated into individual features of buildings. This merging of functions in buildings, in addition to the modular and hybrid composite construction of bridges, gives rise to novel and compelling solutions regarding structural safety, serviceability, aesthetics, economy, and sustainability. Alongside these opportunities, however, composites may also reveal limitations in their structural application, which can be caused by their anisotropy or viscoelasticity, or in terms of ductility, fatigue, fire resistance, and durability. The monograph first addresses these limitations from a scientific point of view and then demonstrates how they can be overcome through suitable structural and architectural design. Subsequently, it is shown how the opportunities can be explored and the current design space expanded, to allow composites to develop to their full potential in structural engineering and architecture.

A pioneering look at an immensely creative period in Japanese art that developed amid the Cold War. Alicia Volk brings to light a significant body of postwar Japanese art, exploring how it accommodated and resisted the workings of the American empire during the early Cold War. Volk's groundbreaking account presents the points of view of Japanese artists and their audiences under American occupation and amid the ruins of war. Each chapter reveals how artists embraced new roles for art in the public sphere--at times by enacting radical critiques of established institutions, values, and practices--and situates a range of compelling art objects in their intersecting artistic and political worlds. Centering on the diverse and divisive terrain of Japanese art between 1945 and 1952, In the Shadow of Empire creates a fluid map of relationality that brings multiple Cold War spheres into dialogue, stretching beyond United States-occupied Japan to art from China, Europe, the Soviet Union, and the United States, and demonstrates the rich potential of this transnational site of artmaking for rethinking the history of Japanese and global postwar art.
