Manifesto houses reflect new visions for how we can live. Often extreme and uncompromising, they are vehicles for innovation, new ideas and news ways of doing things. Most houses are the product of multiple layers of norms and expectations built up over time, whether methods, materials and technologies, or social, cultural, economic and political pressures. Yet, at various moments houses have been built that break with the past and do something different – houses that stand outside of these expectations and instead are conceived to embody whole new theories or agendas. We call these ‘manifesto houses’. For the first time, this compelling thread in the history of architecture is surveyed by Owen Hopkins. He brings together a collection of twenty-one such manifesto houses, exploring the visions for architecture conjured by Andrea Palladio, Eileen Gray, Frank Lloyd Wright, Harry Seidler, Lina Bo Bardi, Anupama Kundoo and Sou Fujimoto, among others. Joseph Mallord William Turner's The Batt le of Trafalgar is one of the most famous and recognisable paintings in the collection of the National Maritime Museum. Published to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Turner's birth and 220 years aft er the batt le for which this monumental work is named, the book situates the painting alongside plans, sketches and artefacts from the National Maritime Museum's collection and examines Turner's contribution to maritime art and to Nelson's complicated legacy. The Batt le of Trafalgar was the only work Turner made 'by royal command' and the largest he painted. Although best remembered as an unconventional artist, with this commission Turner was tasked with producing a patriotic painting to adorn the halls of power. On completion, the piece was the subject of intense scrutiny, att racting criticism for perceived historical inaccuracies in the representation of the batt le. Yet it remains a powerful artwork, which combines a celebration of maritime victory with a tribute to national a hero, an ode to ordinary sailors and a meditation on the horrors of war. Three chapters consider: the artist and the batt le; the commissioning of the work, Turner's artistic process and specifi c elements and events within the fi nished piece; and the response to the work, including its display in the National Gallery of Naval Art at Greenwich Hospital.

The Art of Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782) is the first English-language monograph on this exceptional German artist that critically examines Therbusch's artworks and career as a history and mythological painter, portraitist, and maker of synthetic pigments within the German and international milieu that both condemned and celebrated her accomplishments. Adding to the excellent scholarship on French, British, Italian, and Swiss eighteenth-century women painters, this book showcases the social and cultural practices of court cultures beyond France, with a focus on German-speaking Europe and how a provocative woman painter navigated within them. The sixteenth-century pictorial manuscript known as the Codex Borbonicus contains a remarkable record of the eighteen Mexica (or "Aztec") festival periods of twenty days, known as veintenas, celebrated during the 365-day solar year. Because its indigenous artists framed the Borbonicus veintenas with historical year dates, this volume situates the annually recurring rituals within the march of linear, reckoned time, in the singular year "2 Reed" (1507), during the reign of Moteuczoma II. DiCesare attends to the historical dimensions of several unusual scenes, proposing that the veintenas probably varied significantly from year to year in response to historical concerns. She considers particularly whether the Borbonicus veintenas document the confluence of solar year ceremonies with a second set of ritual feast days, governed by the 260-day cycle known as the tonalpohualli, or "count of days." In this way, DiCesare analyzes how linear and cyclical conceptions of time intersected in Mexica ritual performance.
