Tracing the dissemination of Secessionist ideas of child creativity - from their origination in early-20th century Vienna through to their eventual commodification in postwar America - this book highlights the central role that visual art has played in child education and in nurturing creativity in elementary and preschool curricula.Taking the reader through the ideas of three artistic visionaries and their students; Franz Cizek, and Austrian-American émigrés Emmy Zweybrück and Viktor Löwenfeld, the author reveals how these ideas developed in postwar America through a focus on child-centered methods of 'learning by doing' in artistic practice. By centring the visual arts as a vital educational medium, we see how these teachings have been popularized as a means of nurturing creativity in childhood.Across three chapter length case-studies, interspersed with three 'mini chapters' on the reception of each artist-educator's radical teachings in the American education system, the book provides new interpretations into the impact of these three luminaries' differing philosophies on a broader program of socio-political activism in the USA. Drawing on previously untapped archival and primary source materials, it blends deep material culture analysis with narrative elements to present a compelling account of the unrecognized influence of émigré art pedagogy on progressive, international art education. In doing so, it provides fresh transregional and thematic perspectives on early-1900s Vienna as a hotbed of creative and cultural experimentation and 'mecca' of progressive art education.

Architect Andrew Frontini converts the architectural monograph into a story telling vehicle to candidly reveal the inner workings of the architect's creative process as it intersects with the constantly evolving needs of our society. Eleven narrative insertions are bound into the body of the monograph providing a parallel reading experience -one that gets in behind the polished architectural photography and curated drawings to reveal the poignant, often absurd and occasionally painful lessons that accompanied the gestation of each project. Every building has a story to tell and, in sum, these stories map the road an architect's career can take. Populated with cunning contractors, inspiring design legends (such as the late Cornelia Oberlander), intractable bureaucrats, obstinate senior partners, mentors, students, rivals and collaborators of every stripe, Frontini's road navigates technological revolutions, precipitous economies and societal threats that challenge the very notion of what architecture needs to be. With candor, humor and a design philosophy that is fundamentally open to suggestion, Frontini converts his personal experience into a set of universal reflections that are sure to inform, inspire and console architects (and the architecturally curious) at any stage in their journey.

On the spatial politics underlying the strategies of state abandonment in cities today.Based on the foreground of a prolonged financial crisis, global pandemic, structural and racial violence, Building Solidarity Architectures examines how solidarity and decolonial movements are creating spaces of collective care, stepping in as providers of welfare services, and, in multiple contexts, acting as the first responders in support of disenfranchised communities. By defining state abandonment as a constantly resurging logic of withdrawing welfare services and deterioration of welfare infrastructures that predominantly affect the most marginalized groups, the book offers readers a lens to recognise forms of state abandonment in various localities and the potential collective responses to them. The book also delves into the materiality that results from this contestation and is therefore embedded in primary sources such as participant testimonies, activist texts, visuals, and images, to provide a rich and engaging account of what one could call a "lived architecture" of everyday practical, immediate, and coping mechanisms of collective care. It ultimately investigates how mutual aid and solidarity can also function as a material resource that counteracts the materiality of abandonment resurfacing in times of crisis. By exploring solidarity as a way of life, Building Solidarity Architectures helps us envision new places of liberation, reorganise the ways we live together, and reproduce the tools we have created for change to happen.
An ingenious reconstruction—and revealing analysis through “visual archaeology”—of avant-garde artist Kazimir Malevich's lost arkhitektons.Among the Russian avant-garde artist Kazimir Malevich’s most intriguing works, the arkhitektons are also the most enigmatic, as these quasi-architectural sculptures made between 1920 and 1930 were almost entirely lost, along with many of the accompanying drawings, or planits. In The Additional Element in Architecture, Pedro Ignacio Alonso and Paulina Bitraìn bring Malevich’s elusive arkhitektons to startling, three-dimensional life and show how these objects form a comprehensive universe that embodies the artist’s Suprematism—his belief in the supremacy of pure artistic sensation in abstraction. The book features digital reconstructions of 15 arkhitektons and planits that are lost in their original physical form. Using a method they call visual archaeology, Alonso and Bitraìn explore how these structures figure in Malevich’s investigations of spatial form. In the authors’ view, the arkhitektons and planits constitute a series of changing configurations, or “states,” rather than fixed or closed monolithic sculptures that can be reckoned with individually. They are provisional assemblages of prismatic volumes linked only by gravity and equilibrium—ephemeral arrangements that digital modeling exposes and opens to new analysis. Along with its illustrations and analysis of the ingeniously recreated arkhitektons and planits, Alonso and Bitrán provide historiographical notes on the different appearances of these models, as well as a critical consideration of how Malevich’s own conception of the “additional element” might place these beguiling figures within a wider history of modern architecture.
