Gentrification is extensively discussed in the media, where coverage can describe changing neighbourhoods and analyse the causes and consequences of such change. The media are also arenas in which the voices of those who advocate or resist gentrification can be heard. How can this profusion of content be examined? What methods can be used to critically address the role of the media in constructing and propagating discourses on gentrification? Central to this book is the idea that new research should engage with the theoretical and methodological issues that emerge when media products are used as a corpus to study gentrification. This edited volume considers a range of means that are used to shape and publicize representations: contributions investigate printed and online newspapers, websites, blogs, television programmes and social media. It also aims to highlight the diversity of players who produce and disseminate media discourses on gentrification.

Painted Victoria is a loving tribute to a storied city from one of its most dedicated living artists, Robert Amos, and makes a wonderful gift for enthusiastic locals and new visitors alike. When he first came to Victoria in 1974, local artist and art historian Robert Amos was enchanted. In Painted Victoria, he collects decades of paintings done almost entirely on location into a sweeping artistic love letter that spans fifty years. Painted Victoria roves from the sparkling waters of Cadboro Bay to the industrial relics of the Albion Iron Works, with stops among the boats of the Inner Harbour, the neon lights of Chinatown, and the tranquil paths of Japanese Gardens.Inspired by the local painters and printmakers that came before him, Amos paints and sketches Victoria's waterways and boats, famous gardens, breathtaking ocean and mountain views, heritage buildings, and unsung corners in a whimsical style and with a keen eye for the unique character of the city. Featuring paintings from numerous art collections, including the City of Victoria, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and the University of Victoria, and the artist's personal collection, join the Victoria Times Colonist's art columnist of thirty years in a journey across the city. From the riotous colours of a summer parade, to captivating snapshots of the fireworks at Butchart Gardens, to quiet quotidian scenes at the Carr House, discover Victoria through an artist's eyes.

A foundational work of performance art utilizing two early chatbots to critique the male domination of emerging technologiesA 1976 performance by American artist Barbara T. Smith (born 1931), I Am Abandoned featured a conversation in real time between two psychoanalytic computer programs (two of the earliest chatbots) alongside a staging of Goya's The Naked Maja, in which the artist projected an image of the famous painting on top of a clothed female model. This publication includes a full transcript of the "conversation" between the two programs, documentation and ephemera from the performance, and Smith's reflections on the night. To revisit I Am Abandoned today is to see the critical and liberating potential that art can have when it intervenes in new technologies. Against today's backdrop of AI, Smith's early work with emerging technologies, and in this case chatbots, is prophetic and hints at the contemporary conversation around the gendered and racialized machinic biases of our current computational landscape.

Adolf Dietrich and Otto Dix both achieved success as representatives of New Objectivity. Different though their artistic work appears initially, as representatives of this movement they covered considerable common ground. Their points of contact can be found in gallery owners and artist friends, in museum collections and group exhibitions. After the National Socialists removed Dix from his professorship at Dresden Art Academy in 1933, he settled near the Swiss border, initially at Schloss Randegg and from 1936 onwards in Hemmenhofen. Separated by the Untersee, he and Dietrich then lived in close proximity. Both artists found motifs in the landscapes of the Lake Constance region. It is not known whether Dix and Dietrich ever visited each other, but each was certainly aware of the other. They probably meet for the first time in this publication. First contrast and comparison of two important representatives of New Objectivity: cosmopolitan Otto Dix and outsider Adolf Dietrich Sharp contrasts and surprising affinities facilitate a fresh perspective on the work of the two artists; including never-before or rarely published works Exhibition: Museum zu Allerheiligen Schaffhausen, April to August 2025

Vienna's first reinforced concrete buildings were built around 1900. Their skeleton construction enabled wide-span spaces with high load-bearing capacity and made innovative multi-purpose buildings possible: residential and commercial buildings with loft-like wings, as well as theaters, cinemas, and factories. These were the scenes of accelerated urbanization. This book is the first to document the development of this pioneering building technology, implemented by master builders, designed by engineers and architects, and brought to fruition by determined clients. Around 90 buildings are analyzed in the book - from relatively unknown structures to icons of Viennese architecture - illustrating the spatial flexibility and construction quality of reinforced concrete and shedding new light on fin de siècle architecture in Vienna. 90 buildings from the pioneering years of reinforced concrete construction in Vienna From Viennese icons to lesser-known architectural gems Exhibition at the Wien Museum from May 22 to September 28, 2025
