Design History Reader was led by Kristen Coogan, Associate Professor of Art and Graphic Design at Boston University, who applies the department's pluralistic approach to the topic. University Acres exudes a certain charm that is hard to define. At the heart of Hoda Tawakol's work is a profound confrontation with identity, femininity and power. Inspired by the memories of her "three mothers"-her mother, her grandmother, and her nanny-the Egyptian-French artist (b. 1968) spins a narrative web of life and art with loss and recollection intersecting, while the complex interplay of individual and collective identity takes center stage. The body as an experiential focus is key for Tawakol; and her textile sculptures and installations refer to it both as a protective shield and as a surface for projection; they decipher the balance of power between the extremes of exposure and concealment. Some Ties Linger On is Hoda Tawakol's first monograph; with numerous images and two accompanying essays, it offers a comprehensive overview of her artistic oeuvre to date.

The work of Japanese-Swiss painter Teruko Yokoi (1924-2020) is characterized by unflagging creative energy and constant evolution. This book takes an in-depth look at her painting methods and her own vocabulary of abstraction, which was formulated over the course of a long artistic career. Art historian Kuniko Satonobu Spirig, who is also of Japanese origin, analyzes and explains cultural and biographical relations in Yokoi's art as well as the influences of Abstract Expressionism on her painting technique. Raised on the Japanese island of Tsushima, Yokoi moved to Tokyo in 1949, where she attended the private Joshibi University of Art and Design (Joshibijutsu Daigaku). In 1954, she went to the United States, where she completed her education at the San Francisco Art Institute and with painters Hans Hofmann and Julian E. Levi in New York. There she met artists such as Sam Francis-whom she married in 1959-, Mark Rothko, and Kenzo Okada. In this environment, she drew new energy and began to develop her own style of abstraction and to invent her own idiom. In 1962, she moved to Switzerland, where she lived and worked tirelessly in the city of Bern until her death.

Dirty Old River brings together 12 essays penned by British architect Tom Emerson over the past three decades. Written on very different occasions as contributions to books or articles in magazines, they explore a wide range of topics through the lens of architecture. The book's title is borrowed from the British rock band The Kinks' cult song Waterloo Sunset to symbolize a journey through the interweaving of culture, imagination, and the built environment. Naturally, the architect Emerson writes about architecture: how it is designed, drawn, and built. Yet he also turns his attention to other, wider fields, from the transformation of materials to the nuances of human creativity, the explosive early works of his celebrated fellow architect Frank O. Gehry, and the intimate craftsmanship behind the literary spaces of French writer Georges Perec. Emerson's unique approach to writing is often inspired by sideways glances and disciplines beyond architecture. He offers a new perspective on how things are made, why they take shape the way they do, and what these processes reveal about humanity.

Wenngleich das OEuvre des 2002 von Ivo Lütolf und Daniel Scheuner gegründeten Luzerner Architekturbüros breit gefächert ist, verbindet es ein baukultureller Anspruch: unter Berücksichtigung des Bestands die bestmögliche Lösung für die jeweils spezifische Bauaufgabe zu finden. Während sie etwa mit der Raiffeisenbank in Küssnacht am Rigi (2010) den Spagat zwischen städtebaulicher Eingliederung und formaler Differenzierung eines Neubaus gemeistert haben, vermittelt die Pilatusakademie in Luzern (2014) auf sensible Art zwischen den angrenzenden Architekturen und besticht die Wohnüberbauung der St. Anna Stiftung in Kriens (2001) mit ihrer zurückhaltenden, funktionalen Gebäudehülle durch eine überaus hohe Wohnqualität.

Als einer der Wegbereiter der Londoner Architekturszene hat der britische Archi- tekt Tony Fretton längst internationales Renommee erlangt und für seine Bauten zahl- reiche Anerkennungen und Preise erhalten. Hervorzuheben sind neben der Lisson Gallery in London, mit der er 1990 erstmals Aufmerksamkeit erregte, unter anderem das Red House in London (2001) und das dänische Kunstmuseum Fuglsang (2008).Die vorliegende, abschliessende Monografie widmet sich in drei Teilen sämtlichen Facetten seines kreativen OEuvres: von seinen Bauten über Skizzen und Projektideen bis hin zu seinem fotografischen Schaffen jenseits der Architektur. In der zurückhaltenden Gestaltung dieser Gesamtschau spiegelt sich sein sachliches, schnörkelloses, vom jeweiligen Ort inspiriertes Werk wider.

The first monograph on b+ reflects their wide-ranging practice, including building projects in Berlin, Minneapolis, fashion shows and furniture pieces.b+ is a collaborative project led by Arno Brandlhuber, Olaf Grawert, Jonas Janke and Roberta Jur¿i¿ that understands architecture as an open process, and views buildings as part of larger systems that require a systemic approach and can have a transformative effect. Thus, b+ celebrates the potential of the existing built environment and aims to reveal and activate the latent possibilities within. This monograph includes works such as the towers of the San Gimignano Lichtenberg project in Berlin, the Midway Contemporary Art Garage in Minneapolis, fashion shows for Tussardi, and furniture pieces. The monograph is preceded by texts by Aaron Betsky and Antje Stahl, as well as a reflection by the architects themselves on their practice within the international context. The first monograph on the SOS studio founded by Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann presents some of their joint works as well as architectural works by Studio Olafur Eliasson.Studio Other Spaces (SOS) connects architecture and art through interdisciplinary and experimental building projects and artworks for public space. They use each project as a vehicle and tool to dive into topics, into locations, and into the intricate relationships between people and spaces.
