Jean Prouvé began to design portable and demountable barracks for the French army during the Second World War. After the war, the French government commissioned Prouvé to design inexpensive, effective housing for the newly homeless, prompting him to perfect his patented axial portal frame to build easily constructed demountable houses. Few of these groundbreaking structures were built, making them exceedingly rare today--prompting Galerie Patrick Seguin's tireless efforts over the past 27 years to preserve and promote these important designs. The gallery owns the largest collection of Prouvé's demountables, 22 in total. The second in Galerie Patrick Seguin's series of boxed sets on Prouvé's demountable architecture, Jean Prouvé Architecture: 5 Volume Box Set No. 2 compiles five further volumes of research on these structures: monographs on the Metropole Demountable House, the 6 x 6 Demountable House (adapted by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners), the Villejuif Temporary School, the 4 x 4 Military Shelter and the Les Jours Meilleurs Demountable House. Each monograph (available individually or as part of this limited-edition box set) focuses on a single building, and is luxuriously illustrated with archival and contemporary photographs. Though lacking any formal education in architecture, Jean Prouvé (1901-84) became one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, boldly experimenting with new building designs, materials and methods. "His postwar work has left its mark everywhere," wrote Le Courbusier, "decisively."

Sunshine and nature: California as a beacon of better healthSince the mid-19th century, the idea of California has lured many waves of migrants. Here, writer and editor Lyra Kilston explores a less examined attraction: the region's promise of better health. From ailing families seeking a miracle climate cure to iconoclasts and dropouts pursuing a remedy to societal corruption, the abundance of sunshine and untamed nature around the small but growing Los Angeles area offered them refuge and inspiration. In the wild west of medical practice, eclectic nature-cure treatments gained popularity. The source for this trend can be traced to the mountains and cold-water springs of Europe, where early sanatoriums were built to offer the natural cures of sun, air, water and diet; this sanatorium architecture was exported to the West Coast from Central Europe, and began to impact other types of building. Sun Seekers: The Cure of California constitutes the second volume of The Illustrated America (following 2016's Old Glory), Atelier Éditions' ongoing series excavating America's cultural past. Lyra Kilston is a writer and editor focused on architecture, history, design and urbanism. Her work has appeared in Artforum, Los Angeles Review of Books, Time, Wired and Hyperallergic, among other publications. She was on the curatorial team of Overdrive: LA Constructs the Future, 1940-1990, exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Building Museum.

Since the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Prague has become one of Europeâ¿sâ¿and the worldâ¿sâ¿most popular tourist destinations. As in London, Paris, and Rome, visitors flock to the gorgeous buildings and monuments that grace the streets of Prague, entranced by structures ranging from Gothic and baroque to cubist and neoclassical. And while hundreds of thousands stroll over Charles Bridge and gaze up at St. Vitus Cathedral each year, far fewer venture away from the crowds to seek out the countless gems of art nouveau peppered throughout Prague. With Art Nouveau Prague, Petr Wittlichâ¿one of Europeâ¿s leading experts on nineteenth- and twentieth-century architectureâ¿tours those monuments and buildings of Prague that are most representative of the art nouveau movement while offering insightful commentary on each. Along the way, Wittlich visits such sites as the Municipal House, the Wilson Railway Station, the Grand Hotel Europa, and works by sculptors FrantiÅ¡ek BÃlek, Ladislav Å aloun, and Stanislav Sucharda. An introductory essay by Wittlich emphasizing the role of art nouveau within contemporary currents of modern European art accompanies more than one hundred color illustrations of some of the most stunning examples of art nouveau architecture and decoration in existence, and a detailed bibliography provides additional reading for each of the sites displayed in the book. Art Nouveau Prague is a must-have for those traveling to Prague for the first time or for anyone who appreciates or wants to learn more about art nouveau style.
