John simply can't believe what has happened to him. After pursuing his life-long dream of serving as a missionary in Central America, he saw that dream shattered in just eighteen months. He and his family had to return home unexpectedly. Perhaps it was just as well. John wasn't really happy on the mission field, even though it was his dream. But the nagging questions remain. What went wrong on the mission field? Why did everything seem to turn against him shortly after he and his family moved there? Why was he constantly so angry? Aren't missionaries supposed to be exemplary Christians and above such spiritual problems? Now that he's home, John's problems have only intensified. He has to start his life and career all over again with practically nothing. Suddenly he has no money, loads of debt, no one who understands him, and nothing but problems he can't solve. What's worse is that his church family and friends don't know how to relate to him. It seems that no one can help him. Where is God in the midst of all this? Isn't God supposed to help his own? It seems to John that God has turned his back on him, scowling at him with his arms crossed. What is a "washed-up, disgruntled, ex-missionary" to do? There is much that John doesn't see and can't understand, but that's okay. God is about to break through John's hardened heart and to teach him about his grace and love in a completely unexpected way. He will also teach John some truths that he never learned either in Bible college or in all his years of studying the Bible and following Christ. Soon John will learn about: resolving hidden roadblocks between himself and God, dealing with unforgiveness, and understanding God's compassionate and gracious heart toward him, among other things. In short, he will learn to enjoy walking with Jesus. He will finally come to bask in the freedom, grace, and rest in Christ which have been available to him all this time. Why hasn't anyone ever told him these things before?

There is a love that so desires others to be free from suffering that it's willing to do whatever it takes for that freedom. This love is the mission of the Buddhist bodhisattvas, the actions of the Catholic saints, the selfless acts of countless heroes in myths, books, and movies who help or save the lives of others, often at the cost of their own life or comfort. Our world around us pressures us to think and act in the same energy it does: discriminate, judge, hate, exclude, reject, fight for our own recognition no matter the cost, and fear anyone and anything different than ourselves. But every demonstration of the energy of God we have shows that it is a love that loves no matter who, no matter what. It is a love that chooses to love the way the sun shines on both the good and bad without judgment, the way the rain falls on both the kind and unkind without condition. It's the sort of love that changes lives. The energy of God is the free-flowing, unbound freedom to love with abandon. The energy of God is a living, moving, breathing awareness that we live, move, and breathe in. It cannot be fully captured by any set of religious rules or any other sort of regulations-it may find a partial voice and body in a religion or a concept, but it can never be completely embodied within a single box.Love is a verb, as the old saying goes. Love requires action. Love requires a conduit, a channel. Where are these channels to come from? How will these channels manifest in this place, in these days? Are these channels not found in our own hands, in our own feet?Revisiting the final week in the life of Yeshua-Jesus of Nazareth-THE ENERGY OF GOD is a fresh, modern look at what holy, enlightened love can look like here and now, and what that means for us in our own day and age.
