Who is the author that dares to tell the naked truth about her less-than-perfect life as a Christian single parent? Angie was the shy younger sister who grew up in a Christian family in a small Midwestern town of approximately three thousand residents. She accepted the Holy Spirit into her life at the age of ten years old. Angie's aspirations after high school were to marry a Christian man, have children, and settle down in her hometown, but instead, she attended college five hours away from home. Taken with homesickness, she returned to her hometown after a year and completed a teaching degree at a community college fifteen miles from home. How did God transform this small town homebody with average intelligence into a missionary willing to serve God halfway around the world on a North Pacific island? But what caused her to settle for ungodly relationships upon her return home and equipped her to survive an abusive marriage? How did she manage financially on a thirty-two-hour-per-week income, as well as raise her daughter to love the Lord while fighting off the forces of evil? Angie prays the stories in the book will inspire you through difficult times as a single parent. She also believes the time management and budgeting tips will allow you to spend more time with your child(ren) and less at work and chores at home. Do not be afraid to disclose your naked truth to God in prayer. No one is too broken for His healing grace.
What better way to encourage our children to get out in nature than to join them in creating a garden? People of all ages find it amazing to put seeds in the earth, watch tiny plants grow, and then harvest food they can actually eat! Health-conscious families and communities across our nation are taking on the challenge of childhood-obesity prevention by re-learning to enjoy fresh produce. The market for organic fruits, herbs and veggies has never been greater. Smart school districts all over are implementing hands-on programs to create backyard and community gardens to teach kids the joys of nature and the health benefits of "real" food, free of artificial additives and pesticides. This new addition to the "Family & World Health Series" is an invitation once again for parents and kids to read and talk together about simple, real-life subjects. In We Like to Grow Our Food, they learn about composting, the need for healthy soil, and the interconnection of all life systems (how humans, insects, animals and plants work together). They get to celebrate the essential bond with nature that is so easy to forget in a fast-food culture. We Like to Grow Our Food is both a storybook and an instruction guide. Young children can follow the progress of a group of characters who take their garden through the seasons. In the process, they learn the steps to creating their own garden. And this bilingual version is unique because it places the garden in a city, on a small plot of landcould be in a schoolyard, or as part of a community project. Whether our readers live in urban or rural environments, they can use the encouraging and simple text to start creating a new world: a new and healthier food source for themselves and their families. A garden is a wonderful teacher, with surprising and profound gifts. This book stresses the need for care, nurturance, patience and sharing--all vital life lessons for young children to hear about and for parents to encourage. The author is an avid gardener, a mother and a teacher with a master's degree in Expressive Ecopsychology. Her dedication is to use art and nature together as a way to learn about ourselves and our world. With simple text, and captivating illustrations by Siberian artist, Valentina Jaskina, We Like to Grow Our Food promises to open a new door to adventure and enjoyment even for those who have been previously reluctant to get their hands dirty.
The book titled Parental Involvement: Practices, Improvement Strategies and Challenges is a collection of papers focusing on different challenges and practices to obtain greater involvement of parents in the schooling of children and youth. The authors espoused, to varying degrees, the unique and complex patterns of parent-school relationships pointing out two significant areas where parents should become involved, namely home-based and school-based. In their exposition of these two areas, the authors of the various chapters point out both macro and micro antecedents of how parents are involved both at home (home-based) and at school (school-based) supporting their children towards achieving success. At the macro-level, the authors who contributed to this book reflected upon policy issues whereby the Ministries of Education in various countries (i.e., New Zealand, Israel, Finland, South Africa, and the United States) instigated strategies for parental involvement with varying degrees of success. There is also evidence of socio-cultural perspectives and teachers'' ethnic and professional identities impacting on attitudes towards parental involvement both at school and at home. In addition, the authors point to the impact of gender differences (fathers and mothers) and at-home engagement with children''s educational success. In sum, there are many and variable barriers, obstacles, and challenges towards enabling parents for greater involvement in their children''s academic achievements, and a need for more consistency and collaboration across home and school systems. Presenting their most up-to-date research findings, the authors of the various chapters espouse their viewpoints pertaining to parental involvement from the perspective of the parents themselves, the perspective of the teachers, and the views of students both in the home and at the school. For the most part, however, the authors advocate the belief that strengthening parent-teacher relationships will promote the child''s development and success in school and in life.
Our teenagers are suffering more than ever. College counseling centers are overwhelmed, parents are worried, and mental health issues are increasingly common in young people between the ages of 12 and 20. Parents are particularly concerned about how to help their kids achieve a safe, healthy, and fulfilling college experience in light of soaring rates of depression and anxiety in young people. Mood Prep 101: A Parent''s Guide to Preventing Depression and Anxiety in College-Bound Teens answers the question most parents have - "What can we do?" - when it comes to college-bound teens who may be vulnerable to anxiety and depression. Written with humor and compassion by award-winning psychologist and psychotherapist Carol Landau, this timely book empowers parents by providing strategies for helping their children psychologically prepare for college and adulthood, as well as byaddressing and alleviating the anxiety parents themselves may feel about kids leaving home for the first time. Young people need a solid foundation of parental support in order to succeed at college; as such, Landau shows parents how they can promote healthy communication and problem-solving skills, and how theycan help young people learn to better regulate emotions and tolerate distress. Landau also describes stressors typical amongst college students, and explains how to identify vulnerabilities to anxiety and depression, including perfectionism, social isolation, and the feeling of being "different". Finally, the book sheds light on some of the risky behaviors commonly found on today''s college campuses, such as substance use and unsafe sexual relationships, and how they can exacerbate or eventrigger anxiety and depression in young people. Landau concludes by calling on parents and educators to back away from the stressful, competitive focus of the college admissions process and turn instead to the values of curiosity, collaboration and empathy.
