How did the Chinese character Xi, also a prominent family name in China, originate? The mute swan might very well hold the answer to the question. In 2014, the author, a former Harvard fellow, was stunned to come across a scene in which two mute swan parents disciplined and trained one of their three children, which precisely captured the original meaning of the character Xi. His curiosity about the bird as an intelligent animal species was finally given an opportunity to flourish five years later, when more than two dozen mute swans wintered in the Chestnut Hill Reservoir in the west periphery of the city of Boston, Massachusetts. He soon discovered that mute swans have evolved a practice that can only be characterized as a religion or faith, indicating that religion or faith is not an experience unique to humans. His observations suggest that the bird has formed a primitive civilization with significant social structure. This book is the fruition of his passionate inquiries and painstaking documentation over a full, intensive year. The most comprehensive book about the mute swan so far, it systemically presents various aspects of mute swans, from their habitat and other birds that share the same water with them, to their relationship with humans, to their behavior, their faith, and their family lives. It integrates photography, nature, sciences, and humanity, as well as tales of his encounters with mute swans and other birds: at one end of the spectrum, the book goes into great detail about mute swans' wing structure; at the other, it brings in early Chinese civilization--Chinese idioms, mythology, Taoism, and the oracle bone script--as relevant to birds.Among the book's most valuable features: 167 sets of beautiful photo illustrationsA diligent case study on human, environment, and animalsCareful photo annotations that promote critical thinking and discussionBrainstorm questions that encourage open-minded curiosityBilingual in English and Chinese; the two languages are printed side by side to be beneficial to language learnersA complementary video series on YouTube, titled Dr. Gang Xu's Swan WorldA book of stunning discoveries, Great Mute Swans is for a broad audience. With its numerous photographic illustrations, the book is a great gift for families and children of a wide range of ages.

The inspiring true story of one man's rise from homelessness to success in the world of TV and movie production...----------Having grown up with an absentee single mother and subjected to homelessness, to being shunted from relative to relative and experiencing the murder of a beloved cousin, Markus Burns made his way to Minneapolis. It was here, where, still just a teen, he fathered a child and ran the streets, cheating death not once, but twice along the way. The true story of how this troubled young man became a successful reality TV producer (Real Housewives of Atlanta, Sunday Best, Married at First Sight) is the subject of Markus Burns' heartfelt and moving memoir, The Debriefing of Markus Burns. With his firsthand experience of being a disenfranchised Black male who successfully left the street life behind him, Markus is now sharing his success story with all who desire to be inspired. His riveting and unforgettable memoir, The Debriefing of Markus Burns, is drawn from his own experiences as a fatherless runaway, teen parent, and high school dropout. In telling his sometimes harrowing, yet, always challenging life story, in which he went from an aimless existence to channeling his energy and determination into creating a better life for himself, Markus offers great insight on the many challenges faced by poor young men of color in America today. Taking on the role of spokesman for those who grew up amid the turmoil and hopelessness of America's inner cities, Markus Burns' tale of triumph is guaranteed to inspire people from all walks of life.

The must-read guide to help your child deal with the fallout of remote learning and navigate today''s high-stakes, high-stress education experience with effective strategies and tools to help students manage their mental health and reach their full potential in school and life from a child psychologist with over twenty years of experience. “The Disintegrating Student will quickly become an essential guide for every student and parent working to survive and thrive in the current education environment." —Carolyn Lambert, Parent Coach, Nathan’s Waypoint You know your child is bright. Until recently, school was fine--easy, even. Now, your son or daughter is struggling academically and emotionally. Falling grades, scattered work, assignments unfinished or not turned in, outbursts and upheaval...what is going on? Is it remote-learning, hybrid classes, ever changing COVID protocols? Or is it something else? And how can you help? The truth is that many smart students are reaching a point where they feel overwhelmed and stressed out. As their grades drop, so does their self-esteem, and this combination of external and internal pressures can seem insurmountable. To make matters worse, students feel unable to ask for or accept help. In The Disintegrating Student, Jeannine Jannot, Ph.D. draws on her decades of experience as a school psychologist, educator, and student coach to explain the reasons for this increasingly common phenomenon. Dr. Jannot identifies the skill deficits and counterproductive behaviors of disintegrating students, and provides a complete toolbox of techniques and strategies to combat them. Effective and science-based, these tools address the specific challenges faced by students and their parents, including: * organization * time management * stress * study habits * sleep * mindset * emotional well-being* and screens. Learn how to build trust, motivate, and encourage responsibility and problem solving. Empowering and engaging, The Disintegrating Student will show you how to help your child embrace what''s going right, address what''s going wrong, and develop the skills needed for success in school and in life. “Dr. Jannot manages to succinctly explain…what may be happening for your child, how to help overcome those obstacles, and maybe even adjust your own expectations without feeling like you’re giving in. ‘Successful’ students are more than just good grades, and this book is a literal primer for creating a strong foundation for success.” —Krista Smith, Organizational Psychologist and mother of three (16, 14, and 10)
