  • - The Sunday Times bestseller of the natural year
    av Monty Don
    174 - 232,-

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER - BEST GARDENING BOOKS OF 2020 - Sunday Times, Times 'Every page a joy.' Nigel Slater'From a very early age I loved the countryside as much as any garden and was fascinated by the life that I saw all around me from trees, wildflowers, birds, insects and mammals. In a sense this book has been over sixty years in gestation. I have kept notebooks and journals ever since I could write and I have drawn upon these as well as the events of the past year.'My Garden World by Monty Don is a celebration of every living creature that we all share. This year has given us the enforced opportunity to learn more about the fascinating natural world around us. Whether you live in the countryside or the town, Monty's observations and insights are relevant to each and every one of us. My Garden World is Monty Don's personal journey through the natural year, month by month, season by season, observed from the immediate world around him. 'Wildlife is not something that we watch happening in remote and exotic parts of the world on our screens, but right here in our own back yards and the more that we encourage it and learn to live with it, the more rewarding it becomes. If, in our own modest back yards, we can help preserve and treasure our natural world then we will make the world a better place -- not just for ourselves but for every living creature.'

A tribute to the world''s most extensive collection of botanical specimens, which scientists have meticulously gathered, preserved, and studied since the eighteenth century. With more than eight million samples, the Herbarium''s prestigious collection at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris is the most extensive in the world. The Herbarium''s archive is a living testament to the world''s major historical events--from the 1237 BCE funerary headdress of Egyptian king Ramses II to third-generation botanist Antoine Laurent de Jussieu''s groundbreaking natural classification of flowering plants to Jean-Jacques Rousseau''s hand-annotated botanical notebook. The practice of assembling a herbarium, while first used as a scientific tool, became an art in its own right due to the allure of its floral forms and colors. This handsome volume traces the creative, patrimonial, and scientific dimensions of this exceptional collection that safeguards a rare international heritage; it is a testimony to the modern challenges of biodiversity.

In Being and Time, Heidegger announced the "Task of Destroying the History of Ontology" in order to free what had remained "unthought" in Western metaphysics. The unpublished part of that work was to be titled "Basic Features of a Phenomenological Destruction of the History of Ontology. According to the Guiding Thread of the Problem of Temporality." This latest work in the Reiner Schürmann Selected Writings and Lecture Notes series aims to carry out Heidegger's plan. The destruction, or, as it is later called, the deconstruction of metaphysics, has a negative side-the peeling off, or the archeology, of metaphysical history by means of the guiding thread of the question of Being-and a positive side-"retrieval" of the original experience of Being in ancient Greek philosophy. "The destruction has no other intent than to win back the original experience of metaphysics through a deconstruction of those conceptions which have become current and empty." The purpose of taking to pieces the fabric of Western metaphysics is to show how at each important stage "the question of the meaning of Being has not only remained unattended to or inadequately raised, but that it has become quite forgotten in spite of all our interest in 'metaphysics'."

Tax avoidance is an area of law that changes frequently, and is subject to close scrutiny. Tax practitioners are expected to understand the legislative and regulatory frameworks that apply, so as to recognise their obligations, and the obligations of their clients to behave responsibility. This book focuses on the ways in which tax avoidance has been combated in the UK.The concept of "tax avoidance", and how it has been developed in legislation and case law, is clearly explained. The author also provides practical guidance with regard to the application of the supply side measures (from DOTAS (Disclosure of Tax Avoidance Schemes) to POTAS (Promoters of Tax Avoidance Schemes). The first part of the book looks primarily at the relevant legal developments, highlighting the relevant cases throughout. Part Two covers the supply side measures that have been introduced, from DOTAS onwards, including the penalty regime, with the aim of seeking to dissuade individuals and businesses from engaging in tax avoidance practices. The measures applying to both indirect and direct taxes are covered. This authoritative title will help advisers to avoid falling foul of these regulations and ensure that their reputation as a provider of tax advice remains 'clean'.

This is a layman's guide to all aspects of Scottish society and there is no other book quite like it. The aim of this book is to share an understanding of the information and data that should underpin the political debate in Scotland. If you just want some facts and figures then you'll find them within, but the intention is not just to list statistics about Scotland; it is to highlight sources, dismantle barriers of jargon and place information in a context where you can relate them to your morals and politics. In short, to assist anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of our society.
