The following volume contains the substance of a series of three lectures delivered at Yale University in March 1928, and repeated in the United Congregational Church at Bridgeport, Connecticut, on the Dwight H. Terry Foundation. Its general purpose is the consideration of religion in the light of science and philosophy, and although the main science chosen for discussion has been that of psychology (also in its applied form of psychotherapy), the attempt has been made to preserve a due perspective by not omitting a consideration of the physical and biological sciences in their more general, or philosophical, aspects. The book represents a somewhat fuller treatment of the subject than was possible in the lectures, and may be regarded as a sequel and completion of the author's previous book, Mind and Personality, since it is an attempt to deal more thoroughly with the problem of personality in its relation to science and to the general concept of 'value.' Although much of the discussion is abstract and philosophical, it is based upon scientific evidence gained by close and prolonged observation, in hospital and consulting room, of disturbances of human character and conduct.

After three- quarters of a century, Dr. Abraham Kuyper's exhaustive study of the work of the Holy Spirit -- how available for the first time in a paperback edition -- still stands undiminished as a comprehensive Protestant statement about a central but much-misunderstood part of the Christian faith. "I have made an effort," Dr. Kuyper writes in his preface, "to represent the work of the Holy Spirit in its organic relations, so that the reader may survey the entire domain. And in surveying, who is not surprised at the ever-widening dimensions of the work of the Holy Spirit in all the things that pertain to God and man?" The 123 brief sections that make up this work first appeared in the Heraut, a Dutch religious weekly of which Dr. Kuyper served as editor. So it is that this profound exposition is lucidly written in the language of the ordinary people for whose spiritual growth he was deeply concerned.

The Monte Carlo (MC) method, established as the gold standard to predict results of physical processes, is now fast becoming a routine clinical tool for applications that range from quality control to treatment verification. This book provides a basic understanding of the fundamental principles and limitations of the MC method in the interpretation and validation of results for various scenarios. It shows how user-friendly and speed optimized MC codes can achieve online image processing or dose calculations in a clinical setting. It introduces this essential method with emphasis on applications in hardware design and testing, radiological imaging, radiation therapy, and radiobiology.

  • - Triumphal Entries and Festivals in Early Modern Scotland
    av Giovanna Guidicini
    2 077,-

Based on a comprehensive interpretation and comparison of the existing sources, this book examines early-modern Scottish triumphal entries as politicised events taking place in the urban scenario, where the relationship between urban authorities and rulers was represented and negotiated both visually and through the use of space. The book argues that the significance of triumphal entries becomes clearer when they are seen as a sequence of interconnected events; contextualising them helps understanding of the organisers' desire to follow or separate from tradition, incorporating or refusing to acknowledge foreign flavours.

  • - Exploring Biological Determinants of Behavior
av F. Scott (Department of Pharmacology Hall
    1 548,-

Epigenetics and Behavior: Exploring Biological Determinants of Behavior discusses the evolutionary basis of neurodevelopmental regulation of gene expression by experience (epigenetics). While many areas of scientific inquiry have sought to understand what determines the variation in human attributes (phenotypes) that have consistent trait-like features, including anxiety or fearlessness, aggressive or non-aggressive behavior, social or antisocial behavior, charitable or miserly traits, and so forth, this book takes a comprehensive approach. Over the lifespan of a particular individual, these traits, although flexible, are often highly consistent. The "nature-nurture” or "genes versus environment” discussion is one of the longstanding arguments in all philosophical inquiry. And now, as we stand on the threshold of a complete understanding of the most fundamental question about human nature, all a result of combined empirical and theoretical advances in epigenetics which influence developmental psychobiology and evolutionary biology, the science is rapidly progressing. With the advent of epigenetics we now have a mechanism (or mechanisms, really) to explain how this process works at a molecular level - that is, evolutionary selected mechanisms of gene-environment interactions are literally "written” into our genetic code. This book draws together the knowledge and ideas from the different fields that collectively have answered the "nature-nurture” discussion. Integrates the findings of developmental psychobiology with epigenetics in an evolutionary contextWritten to convey a new perspective on epigenetic effects on behavior, while maintaining fluid writing prose for the uninformed readerAssembles knowledge from a number of fields, including developmental psychobiology, genomics, epigenetics and evolutionary biology to paint a precise picture of epigenetic influences on personality

In addition, it offers practical tools for clinicians to become more culturally responsive with transgender and non-binary clients.

Subversive Language and Contemporary Women Artists of Color presents the intersection of language and the female body in performance art, photography, film, and video since the 1970s. Historically, conceptual art's use of text juxtaposed with image offered a unique entry point into analyzing how the mind processes visual information and recognizes the limitations of language to effectively convey meaning. Notably, its ability to potentially unhinge the mind/body divide particularly resonated with women artists of color. Accordingly, Subversive Language examines the progression of text and image intersections in the work of Middle Eastern American, Asian American, African American, and Latin American artists in order to highlight transnationalism, cross-cultural exchange, and the role of the exile and immigrant, which has yet to be analyzed in contemporary art historical or visual culture discourse. Feminist and interdisciplinary in nature, this study prioritizes text/image pairings in a variety of written and spoken languages as distinct transmissions of cultural exchange, especially for artists such as Shirin Neshat, Lorna Simpson, and Yong Soon Min.
