This book provides a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of real-life scientific problems which encounter non-linear data. The authors first present methods for developing distributions on a circle. Then, they proceed to show how such methods are generalized for other manifolds. They also consider new methods peculiar to certain other manifolds, like disc and hyperdisc. The organization of the book develops the methods from the beginning for a simple manifold, letting the reader appreciate how these unfold and generalize to more complicated manifolds. Next, rather than separately treating one distribution at a time, the authors develop the generalizations of the methods of derivations. Finally, new distributions are presented as outcomes of these generalizations. The authors also provide several real-life examples, which not only attest to the ongoing usefulness, but will also help the reader visualize other modern day areas of the applications of these important distributions.
The notion of a ''crime gene'' has attracted the attention of the general public and legal practitioners. In this book, McCay paints a picture of influences on criminal conduct that, instead of simply resulting from a ''crime gene'', result from the interplay of biological and social factors. Such a view of moral agency has implications for sentencing, and courts are now or will soon be asked to consider the mitigating effect of this interplay. The work contends that from the perspective of a retributivist, there may be ethical merit to a behavioural genetics based plea in mitigation. Furthermore, there may be ways of making such a plea that are consistent with existing lines of authority. In short there may be ethical and legal merit to such a plea. However, common law sentencing regimes generally pay attention to both retributive considerations and issues of community protection. The book argues that behavioural genetics based pleas in mitigation may make it more difficult to reconcile the retributive and community protection orientated aims of sentencing. It may thus raise ethical and legal difficulties for the many jurisdictions that attempt to balance these aims. In an area of law which lacks a body of precedent, this book benefits from insights from judges obtained through interviews.
Civilian casualties in military operations involving major Western powers have started to attract public attention and debates. While the current ethical and legal frameworks, embodied in the Just War tradition (JWT) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) respectively, prohibit direct attack on civilians, they permit harming civilians in indirect and proportionate attacks, so long as the attacks are considered legitimate. The emerging literature on ethics concerning civilian casualties points to the tension between the norms of non-combatant immunity and force protection and deals with complex ethical issues in contemporary counter-insurgency wars. This volume provides a theoretical explanation of why civilians accidentally harmed in expeditionary interventions should receive reparations. To do this, it looks beyond the current frameworks of JWT and IHL and focuses specifically on expeditionary interventions to analyse theoretical frameworks that govern compensation and reparation. Furthermore, this volume carefully examines whether arguments derived from the theory of liability and restorative justice could be applied to the context of accidental civilian casualties in armed conflict and discusses specific considerations in the context of contemporary counter-insurgency, such as whether victims should receive reparations where local insurgencies used ''human shields,'' and how victims of direct attacks by insurgents should be treated. Appealing to a wide audience from multiple disciplines, this volume is designed for scholars and courses on military ethics, international relations, and peace studies.

This book argues that although Soviet ideology did not accept the principle of biologically based racial inferiority, aspired to achieve equality for all citizens under socialist internationalism and regarded "race" as a concept formulated by modern capitalism, nevertheless Soviet films that addressed issues of "race" still exposed their authors' views. Moreover, the book contends that these views made a significant contribution to popular perceptions and to the gradual rise of "white supremacy" thinking in the late Soviet period, with such thinking being now very widely held in post-Soviet, contemporary Russia. The book discusses a wide range of films including films about Africa, Africans and Afro-Americans, explores in detail the Soviet social construction of race, gender and identity and contrasts this with the development of racial thinking in the Western world. The book's rich and subtle analysis shows how Soviet cine-culture in a variety of popular genres, from adventure films to biopics and political drama, re-articulated meanings of "race" through allegedly anti-racist imageries of "blackness" and "whiteness".

In a condensed matter laboratory, visualization is especially useful in cases where it is possible to observe the interior of samples non-destructively. However, tools for visualizing surfaces and fields in engineering are often unsuitable. This book provides a complete guide to the application of visualization and other computational techniques in condensed matter physics and materials science research. It emphasizes three-dimensional visualization techniques and animation in condensed matter, statistical physics, computational physics, quantum mechanics, and optics. The text takes gives a truly hands-on approach, explaining techniques step by step with simple, representative examples.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of computational methods used in radiation oncology and imaging physics, addressing clinical and research applications. It reflects the way in which technology has revolutionized these fields, for example showing how highly accurate model-based dose calculation engines are derived from transport theory, and how optimization tools enable delivery of highly conformal dose distributions, and how image processing, registration, and reconstruction tools are driving towards adaptive treatment planning. Readers will gain the skillset needed to adapt general mathematical techniques to real problems encountered in today's practice.
Did the Lisbon Treaty represent a turning point in national parliaments' roles within the European Union (EU)? 10 years after its entry into force, and after the EU has undergone significant changes, this book is the first lengthy publication that comprehensively assesses where national parliaments stand, both in a national and in a European perspective. To this end, it demonstrates how national parliaments increasingly interact with a growing number of EU institutions, and with their counterparts, and what functions these relationships fulfil. It also considers to what extent national parliaments have become 'Europeanised national institutions' actively involved in EU affairs on a domestic level, primarily on the basis of an analysis of the national parliaments of the largest EU Member States - France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. Despite Brexit, the British Parliament too is examined where appropriate owing to its long-standing status as frontrunner in national parliaments' involvement in EU affairs. The book concludes that national parliaments have undoubtedly ceased to be absent from this field, as they have become much more actively engaged. Yet, some improvements remain necessary to ensure adequate levels of transparency, efficiency and sustainability, as well as to guarantee that engaging in EU affairs is attractive to national parliamentarians.

This book compares and contrasts several parallel passages in the Hebrew Bible that relate to the David narratives. Lydie Kucová examines various ancient versions of the books of Samuel-Kings and Chronicles, showing how the David story is told differently across these textual witnesses. Beginning with a review of the previous scholarly synopses of these passages, Kucová outlines the main characteristics of the particular ancient versions that are significant for her study (Masoretic text, Dead Sea scrolls, Septuagint, Targums, Peshitta and Josephus related to the books of Samuel, Kings and Chronicles). She then proceeds to compare elements of the two separate accounts of David's reign, such as Saul's death, the Philistine campaigns, the transfer of the Ark, among others. Rather than imply any correlation between the texts, Kucová instead provides a parallel of David narratives for more convenient in-depth study.
Business and Human Rights in Africa raises interesting questions about the legitimacy and long-term viability of the business and human rights agenda in Africa, and in developing countries more generally. It explores the key issues for business and human rights in Africa and asks how and to what extent are the UN Guiding Principles changing the law and policy in Africa or the behavior of businesses operating in the continent? The book examines both the international and regional legal and policy initiatives on business and human rights in Africa and how these initiatives are being implemented in selected countries.

This text provides an overview of the key issues in designing and analyzing observational biomarker studies. The failure to properly design and analyze such studies has led to falsely optimistic expectations regarding biomarker utility. The challenge in presenting relevant material is that the topics, although already published individually, are spread over a wide range of articles and textbooks in epidemiology, statistics and clinical research. This text pulls together all major concepts and presents the material in a non-mathematical fashion.
This book examines the ontological nature of criminal groups and issues of legal responsibility and culpability.
