This book explores the phenomenon of violence in Russian culture, showing how violence has been a legitimate articulation of masculinity in Russia, and how popular attitudes towards violence have differed from those in the west, with Russians often approving of violence and of macho, militaristic political leadership.
This book surveys the range of procedures for the settlement of international disputes, whether the disputes arise between States or between States and corporations or individuals. The book examines non-judicial procedures and the emerging principles of procedural law applied in these tribunals are discussed.
Although Taiwan and Hong Kong are both Chinese societies previously subjected to colonial rule, the identity formation of the two peoples differs significantly, with Taiwan's modern consciousness underpinned by nationalism and Chinese-ness whereas Hong Kong's identity is characterised by the "in-between-ness" between Eastern/traditional/conservative and Western/modern/liberal outlooks and lifestyles. This book examines how these different identities came about. It considers the impact of Japanese and British colonial rule, explores the cultural policies implemented both in colonial times and after, and discusses fully the nature of present day identity and consciousness in the two places, including an assessment of how far governments' cultural policies are embraced and embedded.
This volume seeks to demonstrate that although the historical standard of 'civilization' has fallen to disrepute, it still remains an international practice as well as a benchmark against which the attitudes and policies of states are assessed. Utilizing the theoretical framework of the English School of International Relations, the volume identifies 'membership conditionality' as the contemporary version of the historical standard of 'civilization'. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars in international relations theory, international law, international organizations, international political theory, European studies, and historical sociology.

This book contains a review of the legislative process surrounding trust law and examines the development of trust business in China. It further examines the conceptual issues arising from the law itself along with the political and economic reasons for China's limited adoption of the trust in finance. The book is structured in three parts. Part one examines the history of trust practice in China before the enactment of its trusts law along with details of the drafting of the law itself. It includes a discussion of the doctrinal problems found in the code. Part two looks at trust business in China, including its uncertain economic role in society, its competition with other financial institutions in the assets management business and its ancillary functions in investment. Part three analyses the potential for trusts within the PRC's political and economic system.
During Communist rule, surveillance across Central and Eastern Europe was used primarily to secure political conformity and uphold the political regime. The profound political, economic, social and legal changes which have occurred in the region over the last 20 years, including the transition to a capitalist market economy, the introduction of private property and the denationalization and privatization of once only state owned assets and resources have led to a reshaping of attitudes towards specific surveillance practices and technologies, where private surveillance is less strictly regulated or, at least less under public scrutiny than state surveillance. Contemporary surveillance studies remain culturally biased to an Anglo-American milieu and that of ¿older¿ EU member states, despite considerable conceptual innovation. This volume fills this gap by providing insights from a part of Europe which has to date been unrepresented in the field. By analyzing and evaluating selected surveillance domains (road surveillance; public telecommunications surveillance; consumer surveillance; and border surveillance) in CEE countries from an ethical, legal and comparative historical perspective, we are better able to understand the consequences and impacts of technically enhanced surveillance practices in the region.
Northern identities in different regions, cultures and communities - particularly when constructed as foils to 'The South' - have been the focus of considerable attention among cultural historians, literary scholars and commentators, several of whom are represented in this collection. Yet despite its prominence in the discourse of north-south relations, the role of music in producing and articulating notions of northernness has not been discussed in detail. Rugged yet fragile, communal yet solitary, conservative yet radical, the real and imaginary spaces of the north have inspired many different musical responses, perhaps the most enigmatic coming from pianist Glenn Gould in his radio documentary The Idea of North (CBC, 1967): 'I've read about it, written about it, and even pulled up my parka once and gone there. Yet like all but a very few Canadians I've had no real experience of the North. I've remained, of necessity, an outsider. And the North has remained for me, a convenient place to dream about, spin tall tales about, and, in the end, avoid.' This collection represents the first extended dedicated exploration of music and ideas of north, drawing on northern English, Scottish, Canadian, Scandinavian and Finnish identities, as well as north-south dynamics in a European context, to uncover connections and contradictions in the musical experience and expression of northernness across the globe.

This book applies the regime politics model to analyze how a court of final appeal tends to operate within the broader political system. Focusing on Australia's High Court in the late 1980s and 90s, it examines how the court exercises judicial power and what happens when its decisions and methods run counter or challenge the government. It also enables assessment of where and how changes occur in substantive law, workload, and interactions with other branches of government. Ultimately, the book affirms the claims of regime politics scholarship that courts cannot stray for long from the dominant political regime's values and commitments, lest the regime invoke its tools to bring compliance.

This book explores the rhetorical turn as a major perspective for education, and introduces 'new' rhetoric as a theoretical, methodological and practical framework within educational studies. It examines how rhetorical concepts can be used as tools to enable students, teachers, scholars and citizens to become 'symbol-wise', to understand the way linguistic, cultural and narrative symbols work, and to develop critical engagement with, as well as on behalf of, those symbols.
Process analysis is the first tool needed to capture the initial situation before any improvement. Process analysis helps collect the "facts and data" that gives the overall production capacity of the process, shows all opportunities for improvement their amount and source. It is therefore possible to establish the target picture of the process condition and prioritize the needed actions to get there. This book uses numerous examples, charts and drawings to explain the deployment of process analysis and to convey the knowledge effectively.
