“Fans of Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life and Suzanne Simard’s Finding the Mother Tree will enjoy Seifert’s latest... A perspective-shifting guide to our microfungal matrix.”—KirkusEven though we can’t always see them, fungi exist all around us. From forests and farms to food and medicine—and even our homes and bodies—fungal connections shape how we live.In this illuminating book, readers will “discover how these marvels of nature enrich (and sometimes threaten) our lives.”(Peter Wohlleben, New York Times-bestselling author of The Hidden Life of Trees.Esteemed career mycologist Keith Seifert reveals the important role that microscopic fungi, including yeasts, molds, and slimes, play in our lives, all while remaining invisible to the naked eye. Divided into sections, each one exploring a different environment where fungi thrive, The Hidden Kingdom of Fungi introduces readers to the fascinating world of mycology, with information on:How fungi are at the heart of life-changing medical breakthroughs, including the development of antibiotics such as penicillin and organ transplant drugs.Where fungi live in our homes and how they influence our health, from our gut to our scalps. How fungi add important vitamins to our diet and make our favorite foods and drinks possible, including wine, cheese, chocolate, and beer. The essential role fungi are playing in innovative technologies, such as creating alternative energy sources, reducing plastic pollution, cleaning up toxins from oil spills, and even building architecture for a Mars colony.Despite their many benefits, we hold a precarious relationship with fungi: fungal diseases lead to over 1 million deaths each year, and they have played a destructive role in disasters ranging from the Irish Potato Famine to possibly even the extinction of the dinosaurs. The Hidden Kingdom of Fungi urges us to better understand our relationship with fungi—and to plan our future with them in mind—while revealing their world in all its beautiful complexity.

"A joyful and imaginative exploration of these totemic trees."—Tristan Gooley, author of How to Read a TreeThe perfect gift for nature lovers and bookworms alike, Oaklore unveils how the mighty oak tree has shaped and influenced English literature, culture, and history.A charming and whimsical exploration of one of England’s most important trees, Oaklore invites readers to embark on a journey of discovery, unveiling the role of oaks in English literature and mythology, and the myriad of life that thrives within the branches and bark of these ancient trees: from the feathered denizens to the intricate communities of insects, fungi, and lichens.British environmentalist and writer Jules Acton skillfully weaves together her personal experiences of wandering in the woods, scientific insights, and cultural histories to paint a rich, folkloric, and multifaceted portrait of the magnificent specimen. From learning to recognize bird songs to observing the moss and butterflies that thrive in the presence of oaks, Acton encourages a deeper connection during our own woodland explorations and celebrates the enchanted realms of oak trees.Above all, Oaklore underscores the urgent need to protect the oak tree and the vibrant, interconnected worlds it sustains. Acton's narrative serves as a call to action, inspiring readers to engage in conservation efforts and foster a deeper appreciation for the oak's vital role in the delicate web of life.
The lives and habitats of two majestic bird species are shared through striking space, aerial, and surface photographs to artfully convey the fragile elegance of life on Earth.New perspectives can inspire us to think differently about our place in the universe. The first photos of Earth from space showed the home of all known life as a small “blue marble” in a vast darkness and are thought by many to have inspired the environmental movement. For Dr. Roberta L. Bondar, the first female Canadian astronaut and the world’s first neurologist in space, the rare perspective she enjoyed aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery enhanced her reverence for the world we share with non-human life— especially birds, the only animals also able to fly vast distances across the globe. In Space for Birds: Patterns and Parallels of Beauty and Flight, Bondar, also an accomplished professional nature and landscape photographer, focuses her lens on two international species: the endangered Whooping Crane, which migrates from its boreal nesting grounds in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park to the seaside abundance of its winter habitat in Texas; and the near-threatened Lesser Flamingo, which is seen in dazzling pink flocks on and above East African Rift Valley soda lakes. Photos from the International Space Station convey the continental scale of these birds’ travels, and Bondar’s aerial and surface photos, accompanied by insights both scientific and personal, offer intimate glimpses of their daily lives and unique behaviours. While these birds lead different lives on opposite sides of the globe, they share, with each other and with us, an imperative to survive and a reliance on Earth’s fragile ecosystems. This book complements a travelling photographic exhibit, Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive.

The authors in 'Lost Kingdom' grapple with both the catastrophe of mass animal extinction, in which the panoply of earthly life is in the accelerating process of disappearing, and with the mass death of industrial animal agriculture. Both forms of anthropogenic violence against animals cast the Anthropocene as an era of criminality and loss driven by boundless human exceptionalism, forcing a reckoning with and an urgent reimagining of human-animal relations. Without the sleights of hand that would lump "humanity" into a singular Anthropos of the Anthropocene, the authors recognize the differential nature of human impacts on animal life and the biosphere as a whole, while affirming the complexity of animal worlds and their profound imbrications in human cultures, societies, and industries. Confronting the reality of the Sixth Mass Extinction and mass animal death requires forms of narrativity that draw on traditional genres and disciplines, while signaling a radical break with modern temporalities and norms. Chapters in this volume reflect this challenge, while embodying the interdisciplinary nature of inquiry into non-human animality at the edge of the abyss-historiography, cultural anthropology, post-colonial studies, literary criticism, critical animal studies, ethics, religious studies, Anthropocene studies, and extinction studies entwine to illuminate what is arguably the greatest crisis, for all creatures, in the past 65 million years.

“Offering a deeply necessary, clear-eyed look at who we are as flesh-and-bone bodies during the climate crisis, this is a book that searches and finds meaning in both the hard truths and the value of wonder.”—Ada LimónIn this luminous collection of essays, Ellen Wayland-Smith probes the raw edges of human existence, those periods of life in which our bodies remind us of our transience and the boundaries of the self dissolve. From the Old Testament to Maggie Nelson, these explorations are grounded in a rich network of associations. In an essay on the postpartum body, Wayland-Smith interweaves her experience as a mother with accounts of phantom limbs and Greek mythology to meditate on moments when pieces of our being exist outside our bodies. In order to comprehend diagnoses of depression and breast cancer, she delves into LA hippie culture’s love affair with crystals and Emily Dickinson’s geological poetry. Her experience with chemotherapy leads to reflection on Western medicine and its intolerance of death and the healing capacity of nature. And throughout, she challenges the false separation between the human and the “primeval, animal mode of being.”At once intimate and expansive, The Science of Last Things peels back layers of human thought and behavior, breaking down our modern conceptions of individuality and reframing us as participants in a world of astounding elegance and mystery.

By 2030, either China or the US, or both, will be on the Moon with permanently crewed bases. This will draw a lot of attention when it happens. "China lands on the Moon" will be an epochal headline. Now is the time to start paying attention. This GAO report is a good place to start. This document provides an overview of the NASA Artemis program, focusing on the development of the human landing system and space suits for the Artemis III mission. It discusses progress made, challenges faced, and mentions that a lunar landing in 2025 is unlikely due to various reasons. The document also discusses NASA's contracting approach for acquiring these systems as services. This annotated edition illustrates the capabilities of the AI Lab for Book-Lovers to add context and ease-of-use to manuscripts. It includes five types of abstracts, building from simplest to more complex: TLDR (one word), ELI5, TLDR (vanilla), Scientific Style, and Action Items; three essays to increase viewpoint diversity: Formal Dissent; Red Team Critique; and MAGA Perspective; Notable Passages and Nutshell Summaries for each page; and a specially commissioned comparison of Artemis and the Chinese lunar program.
This 2017 report played a crucial role in the decisions involved in creating United States Space Force and remains an essential guide to thinking about the strategic value of ultra-low-cost launch. This document discusses the potential for the US Air Force to leverage new concepts and technologies to gain strategic advantage in space. It highlights the increasing vulnerability of the current space architecture and the need for the US to regain advantage in the face of growing competition. The document proposes a \"Fast Space\" approach, which envisions an ecosystem of concepts, capabilities, and industrial partnerships that prioritize speed as the defining attribute of advantage in space. This approach includes sortie-on-demand launch capability, economically viable business cases, high launch rates, lower costs, rapid turn-around, and higher reliability. The document also emphasizes the importance of reducing costs through reusability and increased flight rates. It recommends partnering with US commercial firms pursuing ultra-low-cost access to space and creating a purpose-built organization to manage these partnerships. Additionally, it suggests shaping the interagency environment to ease regulatory burdens and integrating high launch rate rapid-turnaround approaches into the joint requirements and acquisition process. Overall, the document emphasizes the need for the US to seize the opportunity presented by the changing landscape of space exploration and exploitation. This annotated edition illustrates the capabilities of the AI Lab for Book-Lovers to add context and ease-of-use to manuscripts. This Space Power series from Nimble Books was inspired by the creation of United States Space Force in 2019. New military services are only created once or twice a century. In time, military space history should grow to have the same breadth and depth of topical coverage as military, naval, and aviation history. There are books and enthusiasts for every army, navy and air force for every nation for every era, for every type of weapon and every type of soldier. Certain topics and genres have an enduring advantage in glamor and sales: tanks, battleships, fighters, the Wehrmacht, SEALs. It's not immediately obvious which topics will carry that aura in the history of military space. This NRO book about the Manned Orbiting Laboratory falls in the "never were/space station" crossover subgenre. I hope that it will find an enthusiastic audience among those who groove on what MOL might have been. An eye in the sky; a decisive weapon; in the Cold War; a tragic casualty of space war; a driver for earlier human colonization of space: let your imagination soar! The document provides comprehensive information about the planning, development, and challenges faced by the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) program. It discusses the involvement of the Air Force and NASA, the termination of the Dyna-Soar program, and the approval of the MOL program. The document also highlights the decision-making process, the rationale behind the cancellation of Dyna-Soar, and the initiation of the MOL program. It provides details about the objectives, experiments, management structure, and funding of the MOL program. Additionally, it discusses the technical challenges, the debate between a manned and unmanned system, and the financial issues faced by the program. The document concludes with information about the budget, developmental, and schedule problems faced by the MOL program, including the slippage in sensor development and the efforts to compress the development timeline. This annotated edition illustrates the capabilities of the AI Lab for Book-Lovers to add context and ease-of-use to manuscripts. It includes five types of abstracts, building from simplest to more complex: TLDR (one word), ELI5, TLDR (vanilla), Scientific Style, and Action Items; four essays to increase viewpoint diversity: Context in the Discourse, Formal Dissent; Red Team Critique; and MAGA Perspective; and Notable Passages and Nutshell Summaries for each page.

And when is it better to give in to the tides? [...] In California Against the Sea, Xia [...] writes about the difficult realities of trying to incorporate fairness into our tally of costs and benefits." —The New YorkerAlong California's 1,200-mile coastline, the overheated Pacific Ocean is rising and pressing in, imperiling both wildlife and the maritime towns and cities that 27 million people call home. In California Against the Sea, Los Angeles Times coastal reporter Rosanna Xia asks: As climate chaos threatens the places we love so fiercely, will we finally grasp our collective capacity for change?Xia, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, investigates the impacts of engineered landscapes, the market pressures of development, and the ecological activism and political scrimmages that have carved our contemporary coastline—and foretell even greater changes to our shores. From the beaches of the Mexican border up to the sheer-cliffed North Coast, the voices of Indigenous leaders, community activists, small-town mayors, urban engineers, and tenacious environmental scientists commingle. Together, they chronicle the challenges and urgency of forging a climate-wise future. Xia's investigation takes us to Imperial Beach, Los Angeles, Pacifica, Marin City, San Francisco, and beyond, weighing the rivaling arguments, agreements, compromises, and visions governing the State of California’s commitment to a coast for all. Through graceful reportage, she charts how the decisions we make today will determine where we go tomorrow: headlong into natural disaster, or toward an equitable refashioning of coastal stewardship.

Palmer. Their destination: the ominous Thwaites Glacier at Antarctica’s western edge. Their goal: to learn as much as possible about this mysterious place, never before visited by humans. And with them is author Elizabeth Rush, who seeks, among other things, the elusive voice of the ice.Rush shares her story of a groundbreaking voyage punctuated by both the sublime—the tangible consequences of our melting icecaps; the staggering waves of the Drake Passage; the torqued, unfamiliar contours of Thwaites—and the everyday moments of living and working in community. A ping-pong tournament at sea. Long hours in the lab. All the effort that goes into caring for the human and more-than-human worlds. Along the way, Rush takes readers on a personal journey around a more intimate question: What does it mean to create and celebrate life in a time of radical planetary change? What emerges is a new kind of Antarctica story, one preoccupied not with flag planting and heroism but with the collective and challenging work of imagining a better future. With understanding the language of a continent where humans have only been present for two centuries. With the contributions and concerns of women, who were largely excluded from voyages until the last few decades, and of crew members of color, whose labor has often gone unrecognized. Urgent, brave, and vulnerable, The Quickening is an absorbing account of hope from one of our most celebrated and treasured contemporary authors.
The book content is written straight from my memory, without research, because I developed it, used it, and had success with it. As a reference guide in tactical football, it covers why and how I developed a formula which assists managers tactically in play as well as in training, can be used by most ages to get their players playing as a team very quickly, and continuously, if fully taken up by the manager of any team he will find improvements in his team's performance and rating, very quickly. It also gives you a history of the games reasons or playing in team formations, i.e., 4 x 4 x 2 and so on. I have included tips and hints for the manager with a fast way of finding the location of them. There is a full description of players' skills requirements in each position, and help for the manager in case players drop off form, with formation diagrams, and all the information you need to use them.Football is a team game, individuals can win the game, but teams win the leagues. I mention this because my aim in writing this book was to share the creative knowledge and feeling I got managing using this formula. I feel if I had the formula when I started I could have gone further and faster in my managerial creativity, so anyone who has thought about becoming or improving his football managerial ability would do well to follow this formula, and create his own methods from the use of it.
