Debido a que esta especie es considerada como "centinela" para el monitoreo de efectos de plaguicidas, se avaluó el efecto potencial de los mencionados agroquímicos y sus mezclas complejas, sobre diferentes parámetros de crecimiento, inmunes y endócrinos; estableciendo distintas correlaciones entre éstos. Los resultados revelaron que los plaguicidas aplicados en similares o menores concentraciones que las utilizadas en agricultura actual, inducen alteraciones en ejemplares de S. merianae expuestos. Los diferentes efectos dependieron de la clase etaria o de la etapa embrionaria evaluada, así como de las características, concentraciones o formas de aplicación de los agroquímicos. Estos resultados sugieren que los plaguicidas intensivamente aplicados en áreas ocupadas por S. merianae estarían afectando diferentes aspectos de su biología. Este estudio resulta de gran interés para deducir las posibles respuestas de las especies silvestres a las perturbaciones antropogénicas, como la contaminación por agroquímicos.
