Phragmites australis, capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction, widely distributes along the tidal flat gradient in the Dongtan coastal salt marsh wetlands of Chongming. To examine whether P. australis display cross-generational adaptation, seeds from different tidal flat habitats were collected and stored under various temperature. Subsequently, the effects of soil properties in the original habitats, seed storage temperature and salinity conditions on seed germination strategies were explored. When the salinity up to 150/00, the germination rate of P. australis seeds was 1.3% - 7.7%. Low seed-storage temperatures (4 C) significantly enhanced germination rates and potentials, compared to those stored at room temperature (20 C). Soil salinity and water content were major factors influenced germination rates after storing seeds at 4 C. However, germination rates and potentials were positively correlated with the soil P content. Meanwhile, the seed germination indexes and speeds were more significantly affected by the room temperature. Both seed storage temperatures and the tidal flats had a positive direct impact on the germination parameters of seeds. However, soil N/P had a positive indirect effect on the seed germination parameters only at the lower seed-storage temperature. The results indicated that vernalization (low-temperature seed storage) differentially promoted the germination of P. australis seeds collected from the tidal flat gradient in a subtropical marine monsoon climate salt marsh area and demonstrated cross-generational adaptation. Consequently, using seeds collected from P. australis populations along the tidal flat gradient to restore the original population could be considered an effective and economical method.

Nature conservation is often framed as an ecological problem in need of repair. With both material and discursive dimensions, repairing things involves repairing people's orientation to those things. As such, nature conservation can be understood as a negotiation between different orientations to ecological problems.This publication seeks to understand the negotiation through trust, the analysis of which situates repair in a particular setting. Empirically, the book is structured around an encounter that unfolded over the course of a single day between white commercial farmers and experts belonging to various government departments, universities and an NGO working in a South African nature reserve. By moving through the situation se-quence-by-sequence the author captures the relationship between trust and repair vis-à-vis the material forces that structured the situation, and the discursive methods that actors used to repair a degraded ecology.Originally from Makhanda (South Africa), James Merron grew up in Botswana and the United States. After his Master's degree, he lectured at Stellenbosch University in 2012. By 2023, he earned a PhD and then post-doc position at the University of Basel. He is associated with the Centre for African Studies Basel (Switzerland) and his work is based on exploring the relationship between science, technology and society.

Yet these home-based conservationist practices are seldom recognized as "environmental" because they are enacted by working-class immigrant communities and do not conform to the expectations of mainstream environmentalism. In Falling in Love with Nature, Amanda J. Baugh tells the story of American environmentalism through a focus on Spanish-speaking Catholics, shedding light on environmental actors who have been hidden in plain sight. While dominant narratives about environmental activism include minorities, primarily in the realm of environmental racism and injustice, Baugh demonstrates that minority communities are not merely victims of environmental problems. They can be active agents who express love for nature based on inherited family traditions and close relationships with the land. Baugh shows that Spanish-speaking Catholics have values that have been overlooked in global discourses, grassroots movements, and the highest echelons of the US Catholic Church.
