In her debut collection of comics, artist and climate activist Madeleine Jubilee Saito offers a quietly radical message of hope. Framed as a letter in response to a loved one's pain, this series of ethereal vignettes takes readers on a journey from seemingly inescapable isolation and despair, through grief and rage, toward the hope of community and connection. Drawing on her faith as well as the traditions of climate and disability justice, Saito reminds readers that if we're going to challenge fossil fuel capitalism, we must first imagine what lies beyond it: The beauty and joy of a healed world.

"People live by their stories - -how can we use them to accelerate action on climate change? Climate scientist and policy expert Anna Farro Henderson embarks on a remarkable narrative journey in Core Samples, exploring how science is done, discussed, legislated, and imagined. Through stories both raucous and poignant -- of far-flung expeditions, finding artistic inspiration in research, and traversing the systemic barriers women and mothers face in science and politics -- she brings readers into the daily rhythms and intimacies of scientific research and political negotiation. Grounded in her experiences as a climate scientist, an environmental policy advisor to Minnesota Senator Al Franken and Governor Mark Dayton, and a constant juggler of the many roles and responsibilities of professional moms, Henderson's eclectic, unconventional essays range from observations, confessions, and meditations on lab and fieldwork to a packing list for a trip to the State Capitol and a lactation diary. Readers are invited on voyages as far afield as the Trinity nuclear test site in New Mexico, the Juneau Icefield in Alaska, and a meteor crater in Ghana -- and as close to home as a town hall meeting in America's corn belt. A love letter to science and a bracing (and sometimes hilarious) portrait of the many obstacles women, mothers, and people digging for truth navigate, Core Samples illuminates the messy, contradictory humanity of our scientific and political institutions. Bringing us behind the closed doors of discovery and debate, Henderson exposes the flaws in research institutions, the halls of government, and the role of science in policy, yet she shows how each crack is also an invitation for camaraderie, creativity, and change."--

A comprehensive history of Philadelphia from the region's original Lenape inhabitants to the myriad of residents in the twenty-first centuryPhiladelphia is famous for its colonial and revolutionary buildings and artifacts, which draw tourists from far and wide to gain a better understanding of the nation's founding. Philadelphians, too, value these same buildings and artifacts for the stories they tell about their city. But Philadelphia existed long before the Liberty Bell was first rung, and its history extends well beyond the American Revolution. In Philadelphia: A Narrative History, Paul Kahan presents a comprehensive portrait of the city, from the region's original Lenape inhabitants to the myriad of residents in the twenty-first century. As any history of Philadelphia should, this book chronicles the people and places that make the city unique: from Independence Hall to Eastern State Penitentiary, Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross to Cecil B. Moore and Cherelle Parker. Kahan also shows us how Philadelphia has always been defined by ethnic, religious, and racial diversity-from the seventeenth century, when Dutch, Swedes, and Lenapes lived side by side along the Delaware; to the nineteenth century, when the city was home to a vibrant community of free Black and formerly enslaved people; to the twentieth century, when it attracted immigrants from around the world. This diversity, however, often resulted in conflict, especially over access to public spaces. Those two themes- diversity and conflict- have shaped Philadelphia's development and remain visible in the city's culture, society, and even its geography. Understanding Philadelphia's past, Kahan says, is key to envisioning future possibilities for the City of Brotherly Love.

Is there a connection between the environmental, climate, and political crises facing us today and Western dualism? By critically examining the subject/object dualism that has supported Western philosophy and aesthetics since the 17th century, Nicola Perullo presents a relational and co-operative account of aesthetic experience and human existence.Exploring science, ontology and aesthetics through the perspectives of quantum physics' relational interpretation and non-dualistic philosophies, Perullo draws on Western theories in anthropology and cultural traditions such as Buddhism and Daoism. We see how the ontology supported by dualism renders the world to consist of static, solid, and discrete things, making them vulnerable to be controlled, dominated, and possessed. In Perullo's ground-breaking analysis an alternative way of perceiving is offered: the "haptic" modality which is guided by cooperation, communication, and correspondence. Such a mode of perception and experience is ecological, precluding the possibility of domination, hierarchy, and exploitation. This challenge to the ramifications of the subject-object model, the very cornerstone of Western thought, is an exciting invitation to rethink the purpose of philosophizing and its impact on life.
