A lightly fictionalised account of the loves and losses of Britain's first World Motor Racing Champion
In diesem Sinne, viel Spaß beim Lesen

The advent of mass railroad travel in the 1800s saw the extension of a system of global transport that developed various national styles of construction, operation, administration, and passenger experiences. Drawing on travel narratives and a broad range of other contemporary sources, this history contrasts the railroad cultures of 19th century England and America, with a focus on the differing social structures and value systems of each nation, and how the railroad fit into the wider industrial landscape.
In this completely new book, the author provides an overview of what has been lost from the national railways. Included are lines abandoned by the `Big Four'' as well as those lost in the savage cuts of the Beeching era, from the largest structures to tiny relics of past glories.
At its zenith, there were 21,000 route miles of railway in Britain. Today the country''s railways deliver more passenger miles than they did at their greatest extent despite a drastic reduction in the size of the network. Those cuts were the result of a campaign by a number of individuals who believed, erroneously as the passing of time has shown, that railways were a thing of the past and an impediment to progress. Although the process of railway closures started early, it gained momentum in the 1950s and in the harrowing years following the publication of the Beeching report. However, as the original research by the authors of this book reveals, it could have been much worse and there were plans to reduce the size of the network even more drastically, to the point where only a few lines would have survived. An understanding of what happened in the past is vital to understanding how today''s railways struggle to meet the demands imposed on them. Trimming at the margins remains an attractive option for some policy makers who do not comprehend what happened in the past and the risk remains that previous errors may be revisited. Now available in paperback for the first time, this book shows how close Britain''s railways came to being eviscerated and how the dangers of closure by stealth still exist, even today
Authors Paul Lawton and D. W. Southern continue this series of pocket books exploring Wales' railway heritage, each revealing a 'lost line' of Wales. Though some of these lines are not lost in the sense of complete abandonment, this series re-captures the impact and grandeur of steam. The closure of many of these lines has had significant and lasting impact, and the recovery of some routes is of public relevance and a source of debate today. The history and social background of the railway and its passengers is explored station by station and its story brought vividly to life through extensive research and archive photography, much of which has never been previously published. In this addition, take a nostalgic steam-powered journey back in time on the long-closed service between Bangor and Afon Wen, cut as part of the Beeching Axe in 1964. This compact guide is a rich and highly informative account of an essential aspect of British heritage.
This series of pocket books detailing Wales's railway heritage continues, as D.W Southern and Paul Lawton explore the history and social background of the now closed line between Corwen and Rhyl. Illustrated with archive photography throughout, some of which has never been published before.
