When Chrysler released the "new" third-generation Hemi engine in 2003, the automotive public placed high expectations on the Hemi's triumphant return. The Hemi Gen III 5.7L, 6.1L, and 6.2L supercharged and 6.4L engines didn't disappoint; they produced copious amounts of horsepower and torque while delivering exceptional durability. These powerful engines occupy the engine bays of new Challengers, Chargers, Magnums, 300Cs, Durangos, Jeep Grand Cherokees, and Ram trucks. Many of these engines have been used for high-performance service or logged hundreds of thousands of road miles, and as a result, many need to be rebuilt. Long-time Mopar engineer, racing coordinator, and veteran author Larry Shepard delivers thorough instructions for each crucial step of the rebuilding process. Before commencing engine teardown, Shepard shows you how to accurately assess the health of the engine. Disassembly and comprehensive inspection instructions are provided so you can determine and remedy any underlying problems. Expert insight allows you to select the ideal parts package for your rebuild, whether OEM replacement or compatible and complementary high-performance parts are selected. The most pertinent information for the latest machining practices is provided, so you can coordinate with the machine shop to return the block, head, intake, and other surfaces to like-new condition. Assembling the cylinder heads as well as accurately measuring, checking clearances, and test fitting parts is detailed, so you're sure all components are within spec and ready for final assembly. Finally, comprehensive step-by-step instructions are provided for assembling all components into a completed engine. The modern Hemi engine is lighter and stronger and offers far better drivability and performance than its predecessors. However, after hundreds of thousands of miles, extreme use, or high-performance applications, these rugged engines require a professional-caliber rebuild. With this book, you can confidently complete your Hemi rebuild and get your car or truck back into action.
This title is a detailed, illustrated guide to the Douglas D-558, the ground-breaking US Navy research aircraft which became the first aircraft to break Mach 2, and paved the way for America's Cold War "Century Series" fighters. The six Douglas D-558 research aircraft, built as two variants, were produced for a US Navy and NACA collaborative project to investigate flight in the high subsonic and supersonic regimes and to develop means of coping with the dangerous phenomena of compressibility and pitch-up which had caused many accidents to early jets. Wind tunnels could not provide the necessary data so pilots had to risk their safety in experimental aircraft which, for their time, achieved phenomenal performance. Both series of D-558 were well-designed, strong and efficient aircraft which enabled test pilots to tackle the unknown in comparative safety. Though delayed by their innovative, troublesome power-plants and limited by the cost of their air-launched sorties, they went well beyond their original Mach 1 speed objective and continued to generate information that provided design solutions for a whole generation of supersonic combat aircraft. Although the final stage of the D-55 program, the USN's "militarized" D-558-3, never happened, the Navy was able to apply the lessons of the program to its much more practical combat types such as the F8U Crusader and F3H Demon. Supported by full-color artwork including three-view plates of the two D-558 models and a technical view of the D-2 cockpit, this authoritative text offers a comprehensive guide to the record-breaking Navy research craft.
The Western Region in the final years of steam traction from 1948 to 1966. A fascinating collection of hitherto unpublished black and white photographs by former Senior British Medical Council researcher, Ben Brooksbank
A remarkable collection featuring rare colour and black and white images that document our railway heritage.
The origins of the Great Western Railway lay in the desire of leading merchants in the city of Bristol for a rapid link to London to maintain the role of the city''s port in trade with the Americas in the face of growing competition from Liverpool. The crests of both cities were incorporated into the GWR''s coat of arms. As the railway network expanded throughout the nineteenth century, Bristol became an increasingly important railway centre with the Midland Railway joining the GWR in serving the city and with tracks expanding into the docks and major industrial complexes as a consequence of increasing trade. In this new all colour book, Bristol based railway expert Gerry Nichols explores the great variety of lines and workings in the greater Bristol area that were still active from the 1950s onwards using the superb photographs taken by the late Mark Warburton. The photos are accompanied by detailed captions throughout. Contained within the pages of the book is a veritable feast of steam engines and early diesels, at work on main lines, secondary routes, branches and dock and industrial lines in and around the city. The photos cover that fascinating period in the 1950s and the early 1960s when steam was beginning to be eclipsed by modern traction. The book is an absolute delight not just for Bristolians but also for all who are interested in the city, its hinterland and in the complex network of lines which served it.
Photographer Colin Momber has spent a lifetime around the dock systems which make up the Port of Bristol, and his photographs provide evidence over sixty years of changing traffic in Bristol waters. There are evocative shots of smaller ships in the Avon and the former City Docks, with a plethora of ocean-going cargo liners in Avonmouth. The now-closed Portishead Dock is not neglected, and the story is brought up to date with colour scenes in Royal Portbury. Each part has a brief historical introduction, and the book is fully indexed.
