First launched in 1976, the Lotus Esprit was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and based on a Lotus Europa chassis. The following year, the car made its debut in the Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, where, after a car chase, it metamorphosed into a submarine. In this comprehensive book, the authors use their first-hand knowledge from twenty years of ownership to cover essential information such as how to buy, own and keep a Lotus Esprit as well as unpublished research and history of the various models, including the original 'Essex' turbo models. They describe the development of the new designs for the Esprit in 1987 by Peter Stevens and in 1993 by Peter Thomson. They also explore the story of the Bond film cars, both terrestrial and aquatic, and where they are now. The book explains how to maintain an Esprit on a budget and also lists the suppliers, businesses and clubs that can help keep an Esprit on the road while also adding a social dimension to ownership. Packed with original illustrations, this book is a must-have guide to one of the Lotus company's most famous models.

The construction of the Merthyr, Tredegar & Abergavenny Railway was a remarkable engineering achievement. Not only was it one of the most spectacular railways in Britain, but it was also one of the most difficult to build, and its long and steep gradients made it one of the most expensive to operate. The section through the Clydach Gorge was particularly dramatic with the line twisting and turning, but climbing steadily along a ledge cut above the deep valley. The MT&A is remembered with much nostalgia, for in those days, Abergavenny was a thriving and important railway centre with three stations and the town was alive with a symphony of sounds such as the clang of hammers, the hiss of steam, whistles tooting and wheels clattering over joints and points. When railway activity in Abergavenny reached its peak, there were over a thousand people employed in jobs associated with this form of transport. Chris Barber has compiled this richly illustrated book to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the closure of this much loved railway in 1957. The last journey on the line took place almost a hundred years after the railway was first proposed, and if it still existed today, it would undoubtedly be a popular tourist attraction.

When most people think of Switzerland, they think of cheese, chocolate, and Alpine skiing. Little do they think of breweries-turned spas, summer sledding, and blazing springtime snowmen. But the chance to witness a burning snowman (not to mention grill a sausage in its embers) is one of the many reasons to forget sweet little Heidi and explore the Swisser side of Switzerland. 99.9 Ways to Travel Switzerland Like a Local is one part travel book, one part culture guide, and total bucket list enjoyment. It allows readers to say adieu to Lucerne and allegra to the place the Swiss voted most beautiful. It encourages souvenir shoppers to cut the Swiss army knife from their list and replace it with a rubber messenger bag. And it gives tourists the inspiration they need to stop following umbrella-toting tour guides (or books that act like them) and start following 320,000 well-dressed Swiss cows instead. Whether the reader is a vacationer rethinking their version of touring, an expatriate who wants to get to know their adopted country on a deeper level, or even if theyre Swiss99.9 Ways to Travel Switzerland Like a Local is for anyone who believes that the best travel stories come from a desire not just to take a snapshot of a place from a train window, but to stop, smile, and disembark for a while in order to bring the meaning of that blurry photo into sharper focus.About the author: Chantal Panozzo spent almost a decade in the land of cheese, chocolate, and people who can pronounce her name. She has written about Switzerland for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Salon, Vox, CNN Travel, CNN Business Traveler, Fodor's, Die Zeit, and many others. Her collection of personal essays, Swiss Life: 30 Things I Wish I'd Known, landed her on the cover of the highly esteemed Swiss tabloid Blick am Abend as the American who saved Switzerland's honor. She is hoping the sequel, American Life: 30 Things I Wish I'd Known, will do the same thing for the U.S. because it could really use someone to save its honor too. In the meantime, she would like to remind everyone that you'll find amazing things to do in canton Aargau, the Chicago suburbs, and everywhere in between.

Mister Moffats Hill tells the story of railroading over Rollins Pass, the highest road in North America. The time is 1903-1906 and Colorado is the setting. A historical novel, it describes the lives of people and actual occurrences. Courage, greed, passion, and grit are shown by the characters, fictional and historical. The local business climate, is also part of the story. A mining scheme of dubious quality is promoted and exposed along the way. Both the railroad and the mine scheme are fact. Real and fictional characters bring the stories to life.

  • - The Forgotten World War II Story of Mexican Workers in the U.S. West
    av Erasmo Gamboa
    324,-

Desperate for laborers to keep the trains moving during World War II, the U.S. and Mexican governments created a now mostly forgotten bracero railroad program that sent a hundred thousand Mexican workers across the border to build and maintain railroad lines throughout the United States, particularly the West. Although both governments promised the workers adequate living arrangements and fair working conditions, most bracero railroaders lived in squalor, worked dangerous jobs, and were subject to harsh racial discrimination. Making matters worse, the governments held a percentage of the workers earnings in a savings and retirement program that supposedly would await the men on their return to Mexico. However, rampant corruption within both the railroad companies and the Mexican banks meant that most workers were unable to collect what was rightfully theirs.Historian Erasmo Gamboa recounts the difficult conditions, systemic racism, and decades-long quest for justice these men faced. The result is a pathbreaking examination that deepens our understanding of Mexican American, immigration, and labor histories in the twentieth-century U.S. West.
