"Winkler, Sie müssen schreiben!". Mit diesem Satz ermutigte mich 1982 ein Berufsschullehrer (Ernst Reimann) dazu, das Talent, das er in mir sah, zu entwickeln. Dabei war das schöne Schreiben von Hand nur eines von vielen Themen, die während der Ausbildung zum "Werbetechniker" anstanden. Etwas früher hieß dieser Beruf noch "Schriftenmaler", aber die Technik hatte das Malen der Schriften längst eingeholt und dementsprechend veränderten sich auch das Berufsbild und die Ausbildungsinhalte.Mir war klar, dass mein Vater Harry als Kartograf (Landkartenzeichner) und dessen Vater Erich als Lithograf (Steindrucker) mir etwas von der Liebe zur Gestaltung und zur Schrift mitgegeben hatten. Schon als Kind bewunderte ich die sauberen kleinen Buchstaben, die mein Vater zeichnen konnte oder die gleichmäßige Schrift in den Briefen meines in der DDR lebenden Großvaters. Und so war es nur der letzte Anstoß, den der aufmerksame Lehrer mir gab, mich hier zu entwickeln.Im Laufe der nächsten Jahre besuchte ich Kalligrafen oder Kalligrafinnen wie Andreas Schenk und Lisa Beck, nahm an Kursen von Gottfried Pott, Karlgeorg Hoefer, Silvia Izi, Jovica Veljovic, Helga Höhn-Stjerna, Thomas Ingmire, Laurie Doctor, Hildegard Korger oder dem Kalligrafen des Bundespräsidenten teil, um einige zu nennen, die mir in Erinnerung geblieben sind und mich geprägt haben. Und schon früh hatte ich Gelegenheit, andere in der Kunst der schönen Schrift zu unterrichten und so nicht nur das anzuwenden, was ich gelernt hatte, sondern auch möglichst gut weiterzugeben, was ich von meinen Lehrerinnen und Lehrern mitbrachte.Nun ist es das Eine, schöne Buchstaben schreiben oder zeichnen zu können - etwas ganz Anderes jedoch, daraus auch ein ansprechendes Blatt oder Bild zu gestalten. Hierin musste ich mich lange üben und mich auch bei Vorbildern außerhalb der Kalligrafie, etwa beim Typografen Kurt Weidemann, umsehen. Dabei wurde mir im Lauf der Zeit immer klarer, dass eine moderne Kalligrafie im Zeitalter von Computern und Grafikprogrammen nicht dadurch glänzen kann, dass sie (wie noch im letzten Jahrhundert) perfekte Buchstaben aufs Papier bringt. Das kann ein Computer und ein guter Drucker mindestens so gut wie der beste denkbare Kalligraf. Was aber nur eine menschliche Hand im Zusammenspiel mit künstlerischem Auge, kreativem Mut und Erfahrung vermag ist, einem Text Leben einzuhauchen. Wo ein gedruckter Satz allzuoft farb- und leblos wirkt, spricht uns ein fein geschriebener Gruß oder Name weitaus mehr an, selbst wenn er nicht perfekt ist, vielleicht sogar schief und krumm.Ziel dieser Sammlung von 555 Kalligrafie-Bildern ist es also, denjenigen möglichst viel Freude zu bereiten, die schön gestaltete Texte mögen und auch jene zu eigenen Werken anzuregen, die sich in der Kunst der Kalligrafie weiterbilden möchten. Wobei auch das Nachschreiben, also die möglichst genaue oder die freie Kopie einer Kalligrafie zur Bildung und zum Training taugt - weshalb ich es in meinen Kursen auch den Teilnehmenden regelmäßig ans Herz lege.
