"Deer have been an important part of the world that humans occupy for millennia. They're one of the only large animals that can thrive in our presence. In the 21st century, our relationship is full of contradictions: We hunt and protect them, we cull them from suburbs while making them an icon of wilderness, we see them both as victims and as pests. But there is no doubt that we have a connection to deer: in mythology and story, in ecosystems biological and digital, in cities and in forests. Delving into the historical roots of these tangled attitudes and how they play out in the present, Erika Howsare observes scientists capture and collar fawns, hunters show off their trophies, a museum interpreter teaching American history while tanning a deer hide, an animal-control officer collecting the carcasses of deer killed by sharpshooters, and a woman bottle-raising orphaned fawns in her backyard. As she reports these stories, Howsare's eye is always on the bigger picture: Why do we look at deer in the ways we do, and what do these animals reveal about human involvement in the natural world?"--

Oreo is a stray senior cat that wondered into my life as I was beginning my journey into TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release). While most TNR focuses on kittens and young adult cats, senior cats are often forgotten about. Oreo entered in my life and taught me many lessons about senior cats and life in-general. I kept a daily journal and turned it into this diary-like story. I lay the hardships and joys of TNR out for you to see. While it can be daunting, it is also fulfilling. I hope you enjoy this journey that a stray senior cat, Oreo, and I took together.

The rustlers are led by a dangerous outlaw named Red Reckoner, who also has his sights set on Alcatraz. As the story unfolds, Alcatraz gradually becomes more trusting of Bill and the other humans around him, but his freedom and safety are constantly threatened by the rustlers and Red Reckoner in particular. In the end, Alcatraz proves his loyalty and bravery by helping to rescue Marianne from Red Reckoner and the rustlers, and he becomes a beloved and trusted mount for Bill and Marianne.

In this groundbreaking work Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans, explores the mysterious and elusive creature known as the great sea-serpent. Originally published in 1892, this book remains one of the most comprehensive and well-researched studies of sea serpents to date. Oudemans became immensely fascinated by this often enormous creature, and spent three years of intensive research before publishing his work.He argues for the existence of a sea-serpent that can grow up to 60 feet long, which, according to the many recorded sightings, often resembles a prehistoric Plesiosaur. Oudemans relied on nearly 200 eyewitness accounts and many publications, and named the creature Megophias Megophias in Latin, in accordance with scientific convention. However, Oudemans' colleagues did not approve of his work on sea monsters, as they believed such creatures could not exist. Despite this, his work gained recognition posthumously. In the 1950s, Belgian biologist Bernard Heuvelmans rediscovered Oudemans' work and found in his sea-serpent the missing link in cryptozoology. This new revised edition features a clear distinction between Oudemans' ongoing text and the many included eyewitness accounts, as well as all original images that have been cleaned up for clarity. Additionally, readers will find a Post Scriptum containing biographical information about the author and - as a bonus - the first English translation of Oudemans' original 1934 Dutch-language essay on the Loch Ness Monster.WITH 82 ILLUSTRATIONS

This book is an extended argument for abandoning the species rank. Instead, the author proposes that the rank of "species" be replaced by a pluralistic and multi-level view. In such a view, all clades including the smallest identifiable one would be named and studied within a phylogenetic context.

The Animal Other in Narratives of Conquest: Uncanny Encounters investigates the functions of nonhuman animal imagery in diverse narratives of the Conquest of the Americas. The author's explications of film, poetry, literary and popular fiction, and theme park spaces draw on postcolonial and animal theory, deconstructive and Freudian literary criticism, and radical social theory. She argues that animals in these texts function on two levels: while they play a key role in the development of both Indigenous and European characters, depictions of their treatment and symbolic charge consistently work to disrupt narratives that seek to present the Conquest as a mutually beneficial "encounter" between two cultures. The close readings of animal imagery in texts ranging from Pablo Neruda's poetry to the animated film The Road to El Dorado represent a fresh approach to questions surrounding the depictions of Indigenous Americans and the motivations, tactics, and lasting contributions of the invading culture.
As All Hallows' Eve approaches, Hettie and Tilly have more than ghosts on their mind. Can the tabby duo unearth the truth and stop the murderer before they strike again - and will there be enough samosas to go round?
This book takes a distinctive approach by connecting how media and culture depict and explain endangered species with how policymakers and natural resource managers can or do respond to these challenges in practical terms.

Based on 20 years of intuitive readings, Danielle dispels the commonly held beliefs that keep people stuck in grief and guilt by sharing what the animals have psychically communicated with her about their death.Unlike other books on animal death, The Incredible Animal Afterlife doesn't retell stories of animals passing. Instead, it offers an in-depth and easy-to-understand account of what the animals have shared with Danielle in thousands of animal communication readings. In her accessible and compassionate way, Danielle delivers the messages your pet wants you to know: they're not mad at you or lost forever. They're still present, sending you signs, and hoping to connect with you. In The Incredible Animal Afterlife: What Your Pet Wants You To Know, Danielle will share what the animals have communicated to her through thousands of psychic readings, including:How your beloved friend experiences the dying process and how the afterlife really works (you'll be pleasantly surprised)Whether your pet is ready to cross over and how to identify the signs. The spiritual experience your animal's soul goes through as they cross over. How your pet views your part in their death and what they want you to know. The signs your pet is sending you from the afterlife, and how to continue actively nurturing a deep relationship with them.As she writes, "I've seen that gaining a spiritual understanding of the animal death and dying process can assist with a lot of the loneliness, pain, and hurt. This understanding won't magically heal all grief. Still, it will soften the edges and provide a roadmap for connecting with your beloved pet again."
