This text teaches basic R skills to political science students with no programming background. Intended specifically for the students who need to learn R for a class and who have no interest in R or may even be afraid of or hostile to it, this text builds an awareness of basics, confidence, and a skill set necessary to transition into more advanced texts. To that end, in addition to standard topics, this book includes three chapters specific to the new or reluctant learner. The Introduction explicitly sets expectations for how to use the book and discusses fixed and growth mentalities, and why a growth mentality is crucial for learning R. Chapter 1 includes some basic information on programming, R, and their place in political science research. Chapter 2 explicitly discusses errors, warnings, and methods of debugging. Further chapters build on this by including new errors or warnings that students may encounter as they progress. In service of the aim to give students a solid foundation in R and awareness of what it is and can do, this book teaches and uses both tidyverse and base R frameworks throughout. After completing the book, students should be prepared to learn more advanced materials.

This book explores the effective policing of public protection issues, from chapter authors with varied research and practitioner experience. The collection is aimed at detective police officers in specialist units, response and neighbourhood officers, as well as new recruits in policing public protection. Each chapter offers an understanding of victimology, perpetration, and the effective policing and investigation of such crimes. It explores questions such as why crimes happen, who the victims are, what perpetrators do, and why they might target certain victims. This book explores the evidence base, past mistakes, and what effective and professional policing should 'look like'. The intention is to improve the policing and investigation of such complex crimes. Each chapter provides a concise summary, a comprehensive literature review, and a list of key actions for practice that officers should consider. It closes with a list of key resources. These chapters specifically cover the following thematic crime areas such as domestic abuse, child sexual abuse, gendered violence, and trafficking. This book also speaks to local authorities (Social Services, Trading Standards), professionals in Education, Health and Probation, academics, and Non-Government Organisations (NGO) in the charitable sector. Dr Rachael Aplin is Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Leeds Law School at Leeds Beckett University, UK. She has twenty-years' experience as a detective officer with Greater Manchester Police (1994-2016), UK. Her previous book is Policing UK Honour Based Abuse Crime (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).

In the early seventeenth century, Spanish rulers were confronted by an avalanche of political satires. Beware the Poetry shows how these poetic libels helped articulate an early form of the public sphere, profoundly transforming political culture. Exploring a rich trove of mostly anonymous satirical works, together with newsletters, sermons, and plays, Javier Castro-Ibaseta reconstructs the experiences of Madrilenians during the reigns of Philip III and Philip IV. Castro-Ibaseta proposes an original theory of political publics that corrects approaches that assume early modern Spain's public sphere mirrored the politics of England or France. Instead, he shows that in Spain publicness was distinct because the satires-about the king's favorite, and even about the king himself-were consumed for pleasure and entertainment. But they did not create political communities or stir rebellious movements. Read diachronically, the long, continuous, evolving collection of satires reveals not just the opinions of the poets but something far more difficult to reconstruct: the shifting demands, interests, uncertainties, and worldviews of the audience-that is, the structure and dynamics of Madrid's emerging public sphere. Applying an interdisciplinary approach of literary criticism and historical method, Beware the Poetry presents an exciting new take on politics and poetry during the period often referred to as the Spanish Decadence. It will be of special interest to scholars of early modern politics and Spanish literature and culture.
