Who are these new Mainers, and why have they come here? They are from war-torn countries such as Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Cambodia; from poor Latin American nations; and from economically vibrant places like Hong Kong, India, and Europe¿in other words, from across the global spectrum.
A complete account of the decisive Battle of San Jacinto which wrested the independence of the state of Texas from Mexican control.Drawing its title from Edward Creasy's "Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World," this book argues that the American victory at San Jacinto changed the future history of all of North America. The 1836 battle, which saw the Mexican president Santa Anna and his army driven out of what was to become the state of Mexico and parts of at least four other US states certainly changed the course of American history, as the author asserts.Set against the backdrop of the defense of the Alamo by William Travis, and the subsequent Mexican massacre of American prisoners at Goliad, this work tells the story of the forty fateful days between the retreat from Gonzales and the epic battle at Lynchburg, now called San Jacinto."Had the Mexican Commander consolidated his forces, the battle of San Jacinto could not have been won by the Patriot Army. Had he carefully selected his camp site and kept a diligent watch, the thin line of seven hundred and twenty odd infantry which surprised his camp in the mid-afternoon could not have reached the crest of the hill . . . Had he won, the Texas settlements would have been wiped out and Mexican supremacy would have been re-established north and east of the Rio Grande. The Anti-Slavery sentiment in the northern States was so opposed to the acquisition of more territory in which the spread of slavery was feared, that these States would have been allies of Mexico against further Southern aggression."This new edition has been completely reset, contains the entire text and all 41 original illustrations. In addition, it contains two new appendices providing a Mexican account of the battle, and of an eye-witness account of the massacre at Goliad which preceded the battle.

Located 60 country miles from Interstate 95, Carrabassett Valley, Maine doesn¿t look like a classic rural New England town. Only a handful of buildings pre-date 1950. Settlement is concentrated in two areas separated by six woodsy miles: ¿the valley,¿ with its 1960s A-frames and camps, and ¿the mountain,¿ where the Sugarloaf ski resort has built a maze of contemporary condominium and housing developments, along with hotels, restaurants, and boutiques. But with just 673 year-round residents, the town of Carrabassett Valley ¿ not Sugarloaf ¿ owns a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed golf course, a 2,000-acre ski-touring and mountain-bike park, an airport, a riverside rail trail, an advanced fitness center with indoor climbing wall and skate park, a handsome modern library, and a park with outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and playground. Yet the town¿s tax rate has never exceeded $8.40.That¿s because Carrabassett Valley doesn¿t just look different from other towns; it does things differently. The two dozen ski bums who founded the town in 1972 laid out a vision for an outdoor recreation economy achieved through creative investment, and townspeople have focused unwaveringly on pursuing it ever since. Veteran journalist Virginia Wright delves into the surprising history of a town most passersby think is just Sugarloaf. She looks at the early days of when it was created, at how the town's unique approach helped it weather both boom times and down turns. Through it all, the town has become one of New England's premiere outdoor destinations.
With a Foreword by Laura Rice, the Chief Curator of the Adirondack Experience Museum, this edition of Adventures in the Wilderness revisits W.H.H. Murray¿s timeless tips and stories of north country camping with modern-day context and clarity, showing that the profound power of nature has only grown.
