Mysterious ruins north of Los Angeles, on public land called Murphy Ranch, have spawned an urban legend that they were Nazi-inspired. No one ever asked the people who had lived there whether this was true, or why they had built the place. Yet the story has grown and spread since 1975, with new far-fetched additions. Norman and Winona Stevens, my grandparents, owned and built Murphy Ranch in the 1930s. This is the actual story of their lives and intentions in building a survival retreat. The book contains many photographs never seen before by the public. Spoiler alert: they weren't Nazis! But their lives are full of interesting stories, especially the latter half of Norman's 100-year life. Norman became a spiritual teacher, inspiring thousands of people with his books. This is a story of a huge fortune, a mysterious healer, black magic, buried gold, the beginnings of the New Age movement, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, Aldous Huxley, and Los Angeles from the 1920s to the 1980s.

"When we think of the Roaring 20's -- that decade of gangsters, jazz, Prohibition, and flappers -- most of us think of Chicago, Al Capone, and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The Windy City has become famous for its one-way-rides and violent shootouts, but author Troy Taylor presents another part of Prohibition-era Illinois that not only outgunned and outdrank Chicago but has just as many ghost stories left lingering behind from those turbulent days. Southern Illinois -- or 'Little Egypt' as some call it -- not only had just as many gangsters and just as much booze and bloodshed, but it also had aerial bombings, homemade military tanks, dirty cops, unsolved murders, attacks on hospitals, and gun battles with the Ku Klux Klan! Take a trip back in time to the days of the explosive Southern Illinois gang wars, when Charlie Birger, the Shelton Brothers, the Ku Klux Klan, and a bunch of wild card gunmen wreaked havoc, created mayhem, and carried out countless murders as they fought for control of the liquor trade. And it was all happening at the same time Al Capone was the biggest mob boss in that city by Lake Michigan. Maybe the gangs of Southern Illinois didn't wear fancy suits or drink their bootleg liquor in fancy glasses on Lake Shore Drive, but they were just as deadly as their counterparts -- maybe even more so!"--

Henderson County, Texas, 1846-1861 is unlike any other history of Henderson County during its formative period. It is well documented and places the county in the historical context of Texas and the United States, but it does not lose sight of the importance of local events and people. The author focuses on the evolutionary changes of this East Texas county prior to the Civil War. Henderson County, Texas, illustrates particularly well the story of how frontier settlements in the South were transformed by an influential minority of slave holders moving west across the southern region of the United States-the expansion of the Dixie frontier. During the 1850s, the county's social structure, economics, and politics had become aligned to the patterns set by older states of the cotton South. Increasingly, commercial planters gained control over the county's original community of small independent farmers and local merchants. Ultimately, the Civil War brought an end to this trans-formation before it was fully complete.

Recapturing the atmosphere of Territorial days, this 1962 extensively annotated edition of a Southwestern classic focuses on southeastern New Mexico, where "murder was a common offense" and stagecoach robberies were "nothing to get excited about." The delineation of this last, lively frontier begins in 1846 and ends in 1912 with New Mexico statehood. Here are the deeds, lives and legends of the colorful men who figure in New Mexico history. The lucky ones: John J. Baxter who struck it rich at White Oaks, Tom Wilson and Uncle Jack Winters of the Homestake claim, Jack Martin who brought water to the Jornada del Muerto and started the desperate struggle among stockmen culminating in the Lincoln County War, and the cattle king John S. Chisum. The land grabbers: Charles B. Eddy, accused of acquiring a county through coercion; the Denman gang dedicated to frightening settlers from their hereditary holdings; and Tom Catron, political boss and land-office man who owned more than a county. Writing men: Washington Matthews, Territorial army surgeon who told about the Navajo; Hubert Bancroft, prolific historian; Adolph Bandelier, pioneer anthropologist; Charles Lummis, the journalist who publicized life in the Territory through travel books; and Lew Wallace, Territorial governor who wrote "Ben Hur." The frontier newsmen: "Ash" Upson, chronicler of Billy the Kid; Major Bill Caffrey of White Oaks' "Lincoln County Leader"; Emerson Hough who mined his Western experiences for many a yarn; and Eugene Manlove Rhodes, beloved cowboy of the big circulation magazines. New appraisal is given Albert B. Fall, who with Doheny, another old timer, figured in the Teapot Dome affair. Not neglected are such celebrated frontiersmen as Patrick Garrett, nemesis of Billy the Kid, and Albert J. Fountain, who, with his little son, a buckboard and high-stepping team, disappeared from the face of the earth. All these and many more live again in accurate eye-witness accounts that make this a prime source book on the old West.
