This anthology of imaginative writing is arranged like St Andrews itself, where you can find an Art Deco cinema, a late medieval spire, and a 1970s residential block all on the same street.
"Prior to 1960, presidential nominees were largely selected in the infamous "smoke filled rooms" of state party conventions. In 1960 two serious contenders for the Democratic nomination, Hubert Humphrey and John F. Kennedy, realized their weaknesses with party bosses would make this path nearly impossible. For Kennedy his youth, his Catholic faith, and his aloofness toward party leaders would undermine his campaign. For Humphrey his strong positions on civil rights would cost him support in the vital South. This work focuses on the Wisconsin and West Virginia Primaries, the only two in which both candidates competed. Original manuscript sources illuminate the differences between Kennedy's well financed, well organized campaign and Humphrey's more amateurish effort. These sources, along with a wealth of newspaper sources, also offer fascinating anecdotes of life on the campaign trail."
John Dickinson, one of the architects of the Constitution--and the main author of its predecessor, the Articles of Confederation--refused to sign the Declaration of Independence. His notion of rebellion was of civil disobedience rather than violent overthrow. Dickinson has been portrayed as a cooler head in a moment of hotheads; a Quaker in all but name. During his lifetime, Dickinson freed his slaves, even paid reparations, and advocated extending greater rights for women and Native Americans. He also served in the Continental Army, despite his Quaker principles, and fought with distinction. Written by the foremost expert on Dickinson, Jane E. Calvert's book shines a new light on this lesser-known but crucially important founding figure.
