  • - The History and Legacy of the Battles that Saved the Confederate Cause in 1862

    214,-

As Union commander George McClellan moved the Army of the Potomac up the Peninsula in early 1862, the Union army had a nearly 2-1 advantage in manpower, so Army of Northern Virginia commander Joseph E. Johnston continued to gradually pull his troops back to a line of defense nearer Richmond as McClellan advanced. In conjunction, the Union Navy began moving its operations further up the James River, until it could get within 7 miles of the Confederate capital before being opposed by a Southern fort. McClellan continued to attempt to turn Johnston's flank, until the two armies were facing each other along the Chickahominy River. At this point, the Union army was close enough to Richmond that they could see the city's church steeples, but they would come no closer. By the end of May, Stonewall Jackson had startlingly defeated three separate Northern armies in the Shenandoah Valley, inducing Lincoln to hold back the I Corps from McClellan. When McClellan was forced to extend his line north to link up with troops that he expected to be sent overland to him, Johnston learned that McClellan was moving along the Chickahominy River. After a quick deluge turned the river into a rushing torrent that would make it impossible or the Union army to link back up or aid each other, Johnston drew up a very complex plan of attack for different wings of his army, and struck at the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31, 1862. By the time the fighting was finished, nearly 40,000 had been engaged on both sides, and it was the biggest battle in the Eastern theater to date (second only to Shiloh at the time). Although it was inconclusive, McClellan was rattled by the attack, Having been seriously wounded, Johnston's command was given the following day to military advisor Robert E. Lee. Lee subsequently pushed McClellan's Army of the Potomac away from Richmond and back up the Peninsula through a flurry of battles in late June. In addition to having a direct impact on the rest of the fighting in 1862, the Peninsula Campaign would remain in the minds of Union soldiers and leaders over the next few years. Even after Lee pushed McClellan's Army of the Potomac away from Richmond and back up the Peninsula in late June, he then had to swing his army north to face a second Union army: John Pope's Army of Virginia. Correctly assuming that he needed to strike out before the Army of the Potomac successfully sailed back to Washington and linked up with Pope's army, Lee daringly split his army to threaten Pope's supply lines, forcing Pope to fall back to Manassas to protect his flank and maintain his lines of communication. At the same time, it left half of Lee's army (under Stonewall Jackson) potentially exposed against the larger Union army until the other wing (under James Longstreet) linked back up. Thus, in late August 1862, the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Virginia found themselves fighting over nearly the exact same land the North and South fought over in the First Battle of Bull Run 13 months earlier. From there, Lee would make one of the most consequential decisions of the war by invading Maryland and taking the fight to a Union state. The Maryland Campaign would culminate with the Battle of Antietam on September 17, which remains the bloodiest day in American history. Though that battle was tactically a draw, it resulted in forcing Lee's army out of Maryland and back into Virginia, making it a strategic victory for the North and an opportune time for President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the rebellious states. Antietam is still considered one of the turning points of the Civil War, but in that sense it also serves as a stark reminder of just how far the Army of Northern Virginia had turned the tide in the span of just a few months.

Adame y Muñoz, Serafín, 1828-1875 Escritor, periodista, estadista, y abogado sevillano ( dedicado al ensayo, ciencias jurídicas, poesía). Nacido en Sevilla en 1828 y fallecido en Madrid en 1875. - Andaluz.

  • - The History of the Most Decisive Tank Encounters between the Allies and Axis

    214,-

The tank was first developed by the British and French during World War I as a means to break the deadlock on the Western Front. More so than any previous war, the balance of power lay with the defense, as machine guns, trenches, bunkers, barbed wire, and rapid-firing rifles all made frontal assaults on established positions prohibitively costly. In the closing months of the war, the tank partially evened up that balance, even as the war's commanders initially proved unsure of how to use them. While it cannot be said that the tank won the war, it contributed to its end and if the fighting had continued another year, the mass production that had started in Allied countries may have proved decisive. All major powers, and many minor ones, learned their lesson in World War I. During the interwar period (late 1918 to mid-1939), a wide variety of tanks and antitank weapons were developed by a number of different countries, and those nations that did not have their own models hastened to purchase some from the more advanced countries. These tanks would shape the war that was to come. World War II was thus the culmination of a quarter century of tank development, and it would also be the first major test of tanks in mobile warfare during which they had to face other tanks. However, many of the tanks were constructed with the static warfare of the Western Front in mind and were thus slow and had short operational ranges. Others were too light to face opposing tanks or the new generation of anti-tank weapons that hadn't existed in World War I. The unsuitability of these tank models for this new kind of warfare was quickly recognized, and the belligerent powers scrambled to create better designs. As each new, improved model came off the assembly lines, the opposing powers rushed to create a tank that could beat it. In that regard, World War II was also a war between rival engineers. At the same time, German military officials were at the forefront of developing new ideologies when it came to utilizing their tanks to maximum effect. Heinz Guderian even published a book on the topic before becoming one of the Third Reich's most effective tank commanders. Moreover, during the German invasion of Poland, Nazi forces gained experience they would use across Europe and in Russia. After all, it was in Poland that the Wehrmacht saw action for the first time, conducting what was not only an invasion but also a trial run of its new equipment and tactics. During that campaign, the Germans honed tactics and weapon systems for the massive struggle with the Soviets, British, and United States that loomed on the horizon. The beginning of World War II found the major powers developing tanks to some extent, but lingering ideas from World War I affected the development of tanks during the Interwar period. As a result, aside from the blitzkrieg doctrine developed by the Nazis, tanks were still used in terms of infantry support, and there were few wars during this period to give strategists the chance to develop better uses for the new armored vehicles before World War II started. Commanders soon found that many of the tanks fielded in the campaigns of 1939-1941 lacked the necessary armor, guns, and designs.Inevitably, tactics evolved throughout the war. The Germans were early leaders in tank tactics, as their successes from Poland through the opening phases of Operation Barbarossa demonstrated. The main German tank tactic was the so-called Schwerpunkt ("center of gravity"), in which a concentration of tanks achieved a local superiority, broke through, and drove deep behind enemy lines, carving up frontline enemy forces that could then be surrounded and taken out by support tanks, infantry, and artillery.

  • - My choice of the Ten Greatest Commanders of land forces in history

    220,-

Throughout the chronicles of military history, the skill of leadership has been epitomised by a multitude of generals, each forging their own distinct trajectory within the intricate fabric of armed conflict. The objective of "The Greatest Generals in History" is to shed light on these exemplars of strategic and tactical excellence. Nevertheless, prior to exploring the group of the ten most prominent individuals, it is crucial to recognise the honourable mentions-distinguished leaders who, due to diverse factors, were not included in the final compilation, yet their amazing military skills are indisputable. The process of determining the top 10 commanders in this book is fundamentally subjective due to the author's viewpoints and the criteria used. These criteria include factors such as the number of battles engaged in, the challenges encountered, the extent of risks incurred, and the delicate balance between strategic deception and military brilliance. These military commanders, although not ranked among the top ten, are honoured for their enduring influence on the field of military history. Each of them demonstrated exceptional mastery of the art of warfare, leaving behind a lasting legacy that surpasses temporal boundaries and serves as a source of inspiration for military thinking and strategic planning. It is important to note that this book focuses solely on land-based military commanders, leaving out illustrious admirals like Horatio Nelson, Andrea Doria, or Yi Sun-sin, whose stories are no less fascinating but belong to a different narrative, perhaps a book for another day. This exclusion is not an oversight but a deliberate choice to concentrate on the art of land warfare and its masters.

  • - The History of Germany's Campaigns in World War I and World War II

    173,-

World War I, also known in its time as the "Great War" or the "War to End all Wars", was an unprecedented holocaust in terms of its sheer scale. Fought by men who hailed from all corners of the globe, it saw millions of soldiers do battle in brutal assaults of attrition which dragged on for months with little to no respite. Tens of millions of artillery shells and untold hundreds of millions of rifle and machine gun bullets were fired in a conflict that demonstrated man's capacity to kill each other on a heretofore unprecedented scale, and as always, such a war brought about technological innovation at a rate that made the boom of the Industrial Revolution seem stagnant. The enduring image of World War I is of men stuck in muddy trenches, and of vast armies deadlocked in a fight neither could win. It was a war of barbed wire, poison gas, and horrific losses as officers led their troops on mass charges across No Man's Land and into a hail of bullets. If trench warfare was an inevitability during the war, it is only because the events leading up to the First Battle of the Marne were quite different. The armies at the beginning of the war moved quickly through the land, but the First Battle of the Marne devolved into a bloody pitched battle that led to the construction of trenches after the Germans retreated, blocked in their pursuit of Paris. When the aftermath disintegrated into a war between trenches, some Germans thought they had the upper hand since they were occupying French territory, but with fewer soldiers than the combined Allied nations and fewer resources and supplies, it was possibly only a matter of time before they were ultimately defeated. The commander of the German armies, General Helmuth von Moltke, allegedly said to Kaiser Wilhelm II immediately after the First Battle of the Marne, "Your Majesty, we have lost the war." Winston Churchill himself would later reference that anecdote, writing, "Whether General von Moltke actually said to the Emperor, 'Majesty, we have lost the war, ' we do not know. We know anyhow that with a prescience greater in political than in military affairs, he wrote to his wife on the night of the 9th, 'Things have not gone well. The fighting east of Paris has not gone in our favour, and we shall have to pay for the damage we have done.'" One of the most famous people in the world came to tour the city of Paris for the first time on June 28, 1940. Over the next three hours, he rode through the city's streets, stopping to tour L'Opéra Paris. He rode down the Champs-Élysées toward the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower, where he had his picture taken. After passing through the Arc de Triomphe, he toured the Pantheon and old medieval churches, though he did not manage to see the Louvre or the Palace of Justice. Heading back to the airport, he told his staff, "It was the dream of my life to be permitted to see Paris. I cannot say how happy I am to have that dream fulfilled today." Four years after his tour, Adolf Hitler would order the city's garrison commander, General Dietrich von Choltitz, to destroy Paris, warning his subordinate that the city "must not fall into the enemy's hand except lying in complete debris." Of course, Paris was not destroyed before the Allies liberated it, but it would take more than four years for them to wrest control of France from Nazi Germany after they took the country by storm in about a month in 1940. That said, it's widely overlooked today given how history played out that as the power of Nazi Germany grew alarmingly during the 1930s, the French sought means to defend their territory against the rising menace of the Thousand-Year Reich. As architects of the most punitive measures in the Treaty of Versailles following World War I, France was a natural target for Teutonic retribution, so the Maginot Line, a series of interconnected strongpoints and fortifications running along much of France's eastern border.

    av Matias Lebrero
    268,-

  • - All Grumman F-14 Tomcats by Bureau Number and Disposition: An Accounting
    av Lou Benoit
    161,-

The Grumman Corporation built 712 F-14 Tomcats, each bearing a story, along with the crews that flew them. The objective of this book was to locate the final disposition of all F-14s. The accounting covers those that crashed, which were scrapped, and those that remain as exhibits. Clearly learning the details and a few histories of several F-14s was, in a word, haunting. Others are the known and accepted consequences common to Naval Aviation and fighter aircraft operations. The highest honor was to document the F-14 crew members whose lives were lost in service to the United States Navy or with Grumman Aerospace. In remembrance of their service and sacrifice in the line of duty to the United States Navy, a respectfully compiled list of the 68 F-14 pilots and RIO's was necessary.Lastly, a short chapter covering the Iranian Tomcats is open for review. Unfortunately, Iran has not been forthcoming with the status and statistics of their Tomcats, and a qualified accounting may never be known. If you want to know where your favorite F-14 Tomcat resides, where to find one on exhibit, and a few surprises - it's in this book.
