  • - From the Nineteenth Century to the Present Day
    av Anzhelika Solovyeva
    464,-

A history of military-technological innovation in Russia. This book traces the dynamics of military-technological innovation in Russia over the last hundred and fifty years, particularly focusing on three distinct periods: the introduction of rifled breech-loading weapons in Imperial Russia in the nineteenth century, the invention of nuclear weapons in the Soviet Union in the twentieth century, and the development of precision-guided weapons in post-Soviet Russia in the twenty-first century. The analysis relies extensively on primary data obtained from Russian archives, complemented by a series of expert interviews, and deciphers Russia's distinct strategic cultural approach to military-technological innovation.

  • - Lessons and Challenges from Three Historical Crises Between Nuclear-Armed Powers
    av Alexandra T Evans
    517,-

The return of great-power competition has highlighted the risks of conflict with nuclear-armed great powers. Such a conflict would entail escalation risks that the United States has not seriously considered since the Cold War. Using three historical case studies, the authors examine decisionmakers' ability to identify adversary thresholds and to apply this information to control escalation during militarized crises between nuclear-armed states.

The Peninsula Press was a news sheet produced throughout the campaign from May 1915 to Jan 1916 initially it was produced daily but as the campaign continued it reduced in frequency to weekly. It was apart from the first issue always a single sheet with two columns with an amazing wide range of information coving military information from all of the other theatres as well as political stories from around the world. It also on occasion included information on actions that had taken place on the Gallipoli Peninsula. We believe this volume brings together all 96 issues for the first time.

  • av Lily Hamourtziadou

A look at war ethics in the age of drones and artificial intelligence. Can there be purely defensive or moral wars? In response to this question and others like it, this book offers unique insights into twenty-first-century warfare through the lenses of realism, militarism, and just war theory. This book challenges its readers to consider war from different perspectives and to reevaluate their views on the morality of war. Ethical approaches to war require that we don't value only the lives of 'our' people, as realism asserts; that we don't enforce our sense of justice with weapons, as militarism demands; that force is used only in self-defense, based on the principles of just war theory. The author explores the issue of civilian harm in war, questioning whether the use of so-called precision weapons--celebrated for minimizing risks to soldiers and civilians--and the rapidly developing technology of lethal autonomous weapons are increasing rather than decreasing civilian harm. In engaging with these questions, The Ethics of Remote Warfare highlights the need for new accountability mechanisms that reflect a sense of legal and moral justice.

  • - The War Diaries of Bernhard Bardach, 1914-1918
    av Peter C Appelbaum
    404,-

For nearly all of the Great War, the Jewish doctor Bernhard Bardach served with the Austro-Hungarian army in present-day Ukraine. His diaries from that period, unpublished and largely overlooked until now, represent a distinctive and powerful record of daily life on the Eastern Front. In addition to key events such as the 1916 Brusilov Offensive, Bardach also gives memorable descriptions of military personalities, refugees, food shortages, and the uncertainty and boredom that inescapably attended life on the front. Ranging from the critical first weeks of fighting to the ultimate collapse of the Austrian army, these meticulously written diaries comprise an invaluable eyewitness account of the Great War.

    - Inside Russia's Mercenary Army
    av Jack Margolin
    202,-

An eye-opening, terrifying history of this notorious and widely influential mercenary group. This book exposes the history and the future of the Wagner Group, Russia's notorious and secretive mercenary army, revealing details of their operations never documented before. Using extensive leaks, first-hand accounts, and the byzantine paper trail left in the group's wake, Jack Margolin traces the Wagner Group from its roots as a battlefield rumor to a private military enterprise tens of thousands-strong that eventually comes to threaten Putin himself. He follows individual commanders and foot soldiers within the group as they fight in Ukraine, Syria, and Africa, sometimes alongside fellow military contractors from the United Kingdom and the United States. He shows Wagner mercenaries committing atrocities, plundering oil, diamonds, and gold, and changing the course of conflicts from Europe to Africa in the name of the Kremlin's strategic aims. In documenting the Wagner Group's story up to the dramatic demise of its chief director, Evgeniy Prigozhin, Margolin demonstrates what the Wagner Group represents for not only the future of Putin's political system but also the privatization of war.

  • - The Wartime Service of Sergeant Joseph W. Wheeless, Co. K, 32nd NC Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army
av Col Jayson a Altieri Us Army Ret
    172 - 288,-

A Guest of Mr. Lincoln: The Wartime Service of Sergeant Joseph W. Wheeless, Company K, 32nd NC Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army is a must-read story of four years of America's colorful history. It is also the story of how the Wheeless family came from England to America in the late 1600's and spread out across the new Republic to participate in its growth from infancy during the American Revolution to the Internet Age and beyond. This book is a story about the legacy of the Wheeless family and how Joseph survived four years of the bloodiest war ever fought in North America. The book also provides snapshots of Joseph's life and experiences before, during, and after the war, most based on available documents, letters, and newspapers of the day, and some based on suppositions. This book is not a political statement about the war or its aftermath; it simply adds another chapter to the story of the Wheeless' long history that helps educate current and future generations.

    - U.S. Army Tanks in Iraq
    av Andrew Eric Wright
    347,-

During the Iraq War, the U.S. Army found itself in a very similar situation to the 1st Air Mobile Cavalry Division during the Vietnam Conflict--facing an enemy who knew the terrain and was determined to fight for their cause. The difference between the two conflicts is that American forces could not take full advantage of armor superiority in Vietnam. For the infantry to truly be effective and dominant, they need to have the backing of tanks, enabling them to continue dismounted operations overwatched by tanks. The history and battle techniques of the army's armored core have been discussed in other military conflicts in depth, but this will be the first full discussion of the role and usefulness of the tanks in Iraq, analyzing battles that were completely shaped or significantly aided due to the presence and efficiency of armor units. These units were well-trained and well-equipped and provided armored support and devastating firepower that the enemy could not easily counter. They were such a powerful force that the insurgents in Iraq had to completely change their tactics to account for the Abrams that they were facing. This work will attempt to illuminate the importance of the tanks themselves as well as the tankers who fought inside of them and show how valuable they were to the army and Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003-2009.

    - February-March 1943
    av Massimiliano Afiero
    273,-

At the beginning of 1943, the German armed forces were in crisis on the southern front in Russia. The Soviets had launched a series of offensives from November 1942 that pushed the Germans back hundreds of kilometers. The Germans had no more significant reserves available, and enormous breaches had opened between defensive lines. In early January 1943, the Soviets attacked again, with the aim of reconquering the industrial city of Kharkov and destroying the remaining German and Axis troops in southern Ukraine, including the 4. Panzerarmee, 1. Panzerarmee, Armeeabteilung Hollidt and Armeeabteilung Fretter‐Pico. After the encirclement of 6. Armee at Stalingrad and the destruction of the Axis forces there, the loss of these four armies would certainly have led to German defeat on the Eastern Front. Believing victory was near, Stalin and his generals decided to launch their new offensives even before the garrison of Stalingrad surrendered. The main effort fell on Army Group Don, newly formed and with little forces available. Facing a massive offensive, Commander Erich von Manstein was ordered to hold the city at any cost, risking the destruction of two divisions of the Waffen‐SS and the "Grossdeutschland" army division. SS Panzer Corps commander Paul Hausser disobeyed Hitler's order and ordered the retreat from Kharkov, saving the two SS divisions. This meant that Manstein had at his disposal forces needed to launch his counteroffensive. The subsequent battles for Kharkov saw the three divisions of the Waffen‐SS--Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Das Reich and Totenkopf-- fighting together for the first time. In the first phase of the offensive, the SS Das Reich and Totenkopf marched 100 kilometers south of Kharkov, blocking the Soviet army from capturing the bridges over the Dnieper River, while the Leibstandarte successfully defended the corps supply base in Krasnograd. After protecting the bridges over the Dnepr, the Das Reich and Totenkopf units headed north and regained control of the vital railway network south of Kharkov. The Soviet 3rd Tank Army was forced to abandon its attack against Krasnograd to regroup south of Kharkov and protect the city from Hausser's divisions. At that point the Leibstandarte joined the other divisions of the corps SS to eliminate Soviet forces and recapture Kharkov. With its reconquest, Southern Ukraine returned firmly under German control. This is a fully illustrated account of the decisive victory attained by the SS Panzer Corps divisions at a time of serious crisis for the Axis forces.

    - Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, Mussolini, and Hitler--How War Made Them and How They Made War
    av Phillips Payson O'Brien
    241,-

Churchill. Hitler. Stalin. Mussolini. Roosevelt. Five of the most impactful leaders of WW2, each with their own individualistic and idiosyncratic approach to warfare. But if we want to understand their military strategy, we must first understand the strategist. In The Strategists, Professor Phillips Payson O'Brien shows how the views these five leaders forged in WW1 are crucial to understanding how they fought WW2. For example, Churchill's experiences of facing the German Army in France in 1916 made him unwilling to send masses of British soldiers back there in the 1940s, while Hitler's mistakes on the Eastern Front were influenced by his reluctance to accept that conditions had changed since his own time fighting. The implications of the power of leaders remain with us to this day: to truly understand what is happening in Ukraine, for example, requires us to know what has influenced the leaders involved. This is a history in which leaders--and their choices--matter. For better or worse.

  • - Policy Alternatives for U.S. Nuclear Security from the 1950s to the 1990s
    av David Goldfischer
    340,-

A fundamental question posed by the demise of the cold war is whether the superpowers' monumentally dangerous and costly arms buildup was necessary. Was it inevitable that the United States and the Soviet Union acquire capabilities to destroy each other in a nuclear war? Or could they have agreed instead to address the nuclear danger through mutual emphasis on defenses? Might such an approach be a feasible option for nuclear powers in today's world?Examining crucial episodes in U.S. security history from the Truman years through the Reagan administration, David Goldfischer considers how figures including J. Robert Oppenheimer, Donald G. Brennan, Freeman Dyson, and Jonathan Schell advanced compelling arguments for seeking an arms control agreement favoring defenses against nuclear attack. Goldfischer offers provocative explanations for why this approach, known as "mutual defense emphasis" (MDE), was rejected in favor of the offense-dominated strategies of nuclear warfighting or "mutual assured destruction" (MAD). The failure seriously to explore MDE, he shows, left supporters of arms control with a false choice between the extremes of MAD and a utopian search for complete nuclear disarmament. Goldfischer concludes with a discussion of how the "Strategic Defense Initiative" (Star Wars)--which used the rhetoric of MDE to mask a renewed search for a nuclear warfighting strategy--has since the 1980s undermined the prospect for serious debate over defense emphasis.Policymakers, activists, political scientists, and scholars and students of security studies and postwar U.S. defense history will welcome this book.

Some 8,700 names are listed. Deaths in captivity are noted together with dates reported missing and dates of repatriation. The index lists every name in alphabetical order. First printed 1919 for private circulation, this rare volume (in its first printing) was compiled from records kept by Messrs Cox & Co.'s Enquiry Office, which opened in Sep 1914 in Craig's Court, Charing Cross and gained full support of the War Office. Some 8,700 names are listed, including officers of the RAF, RNAS, RN Div and Dominions. Names are shown by regiments/corps and by battalions within regiments in the order of capture. Deaths in captivity are noted together with dates reported missing and dates of repatriation. At the outset, the aim was to give advice and information to relatives regarding wounded officers with the British Expeditionary Force. A system was also built up of obtaining all available information regarding officers reported 'Missing', and this gradually came to be the principal work of the enquiry office. The information collected was obtained in various ways but chiefly by means of the fact that a missing officer's cheque was often the first intimation that he was a POW, and it appears that a high proportion of cheques cashed by officers in captivity passed through the hands of Messrs Cox & Co. Details shown are name, rank, regiment/corps, battalion, date missing, date interned and date repatriated, some records have additional notes, for example death in captivity. A very valuable source of information.

  • - Volume 5
    av Charles D Pettibone
    575,-

There is numerous Order of Battle books on the market. So what makes this series so special. Why should one decide on this particular book? First, the first part of each book contains the overall command structure of the country's armed forces. Then it gives command structure for the army, navy, and air force. The command structure for Military Theaters, Army Groups, Naval Commands, Armies, Fleets, Corps, and/or equivalent Commands is also listed. Second, the book contains a complete Order of Battle. Most Order of Battle usually deal with only the armies of the country/countries involved, and then only at the division and sometimes at the corps level. Higher echelons of commands are usually not covered. The exception to this was a book published by the Military Book Club in 2002, Slaughterhouse: The Encyclopedia of the Eastern Front. The book did an excellent job on the German Army on the Eastern Front, from Army Group down to Division. But, only a fair job on the Soviet Union Army. In the series of books I am writing, all of the commanders known are spelled out, and not just for the army, but all the branches of the armed forces; giving a breakdown of all the major echelons of command, from theater level down to division. Under each major component, in the book (Army Group, Armies, Corps, and Divisions), the equivalent commands of the other military branches (navy, air force, marine, etc.) of the country's armed forces are included.. Third, most Order of Battles list the commanders and their dates of tenure. This one includes those, but also lists of their next duty assignment, where the officer went after leaving this post. One can literally trace a general officer's career through the upper echelons of commandwith this book. Making this book completely different from all the others on the market. Fourth, military unit and/or ship insignia, crest, emblem, or patches are pictured next to the unit/ship, whenever it was found. Fifth, the Appendix is broken down into several parts. Appendix A, has the usual table of Equivalent Ranks. Appendix B, lists senior officers, full Generals and Admirals and above, during the war. Another appendix lists some Military Units used in different campaigns. Sixth, one appendix lists the Major Naval Warships and their commanders. This appendix is unique as I know of no other book on the market that offers this. It shows the silhouette of the major warship (carriers, battleships, battlecruisers, heavy and light cruisers) whenever found; plus an Order of Battle of the commanders. In some cases, the ship's crest and emblem is also given. In addition, there is also four to five pages after the introduction, explaining how to use and read the book. This is the fifth book in a series, and the first half of Volume V; that I plan to write covering all the nations who were involved in this world conflict.

  • - Authoritarian Nationalism, Hegemony and Emotions
    av Krzysztof Jaskulowski
    808,-

This book analyzes right-wing memory politics in Poland through the concept of "cursed soldiers" as a key memory symbol, and how it has been used to construct a narrow and exclusionary vision of Polish identity framed in terms of Catholicism, national culture, and traditional family values.Groundbreaking in its approach and combining top-down study with reception analysis, the book builds on the theory of hegemony, adding emotional dimensions to the understanding of memory politics and nationalism. It provides a detailed case study of Polish memory politics since 2015, when the Law and Justice Party (PiS) came to power, and offers insights into how historical memory is used to mobilize support within nationalist and populist movements. Through a range of data including interviews, participant observation, and analysis of various media, it presents a semiotic and emotional map of how these memory symbols are received and experienced in Polish society. The focus on Podlasie, a region with significant Belarusian population and a history of post-war partisan conflicts, highlights the complex interplay of memory, identity, and politics in contemporary Poland. This work is intended for a broad audience, including undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars, and non-specialist readers such as booksellers or librarians.

    - The Unbelievable Story of Major Charles Carpenter and Rosie the Rocketer
    av James P Busha
    274 - 336,-

Major Charles Carpenter made headlines during the Second World War when he affixed six bazookas to his tiny Piper L-4 observation plane and began attacking German tanks. "Bazooka Charlie" and his plane "Rosie the Rocketer" were profiled in a variety of military and civilian publications, including the iconic Stars & Stripes. The major was a high school educator in the civilian world, teaching history and coaching football. Carpenter was talented, highly intelligent, and athletically gifted, but the war truly tested him. In 1945, the dashing pilot was forced out of the cockpit and into a hospital bed by Hodgkin's lymphoma, which was discovered in his neck. In addition to the enemy and terminal cancer, Carpenter also battled cynicism and guilt, particularly in regard to the state of his marriage, which was on the brink of failure by the time he returned home from Europe. Charles Carpenter died in 1966, having resumed his career, salvaged his marriage, and long outlived the timeline afforded him by his doctors in the initial prognosis. This revealing biography of the famous pilot was made possible through the collaboration of noted aviation author and magazine editor Jim Busha, and Carpenter's daughter, Carol Apacki. Along with memories of her father in his postwar years, Carol provided a treasure trove of wartime correspondence between Charles and his wife, Elda Carpenter.

  • - Cia-Backed Catholic Militia in South Vietnam
    av Alessandro Giorgi
    334,-

During the early years of US involvement in Vietnam, the CIA helped arm militia groups in South Vietnam referred to as the "Fighting Fathers." The name was a reference to the Catholic priests who organized the fighting groups. The fathers fought alongside their parishioners to defend their localities from the Communist insurgency, the Vietcong. Author Alessandro Giorgi has studied the subject in unprecedented detail, conducting original research in recently declassified archives and interviewing former US intelligence personnel and Italian missionary witnesses. Giorgi's first English language book Vikings in Vietnam (2024) received praise from noted historians from various elite universities in the US and also an endorsement from Pulitzer prize winning author Thomas Powers.

  • - Popular Memory in the Rise of the Ethnonationalist State
    av Barbara A Biesecker
    1 078,-

By the 1970s, World War II had all but disappeared from US popular culture, but in the mid-eighties it returned with a vengeance. Today, remembrance of World War II is ubiquitous across US media and politics, demonstrating its centrality to American collective identity. In this book, Barbara Biesecker explores this shift, revealing how "The Good War" was retooled to restore social equilibrium to the US.Drawing on methods of contemporary philosophy, Biesecker analyzes prominent cases of World War II remembrance, including the canceled exhibit of the Enola Gay at the National Air and Space Museum in 1995, the film Saving Private Ryan, and Tom Brokaw's best-selling book The Greatest Generation. Situating these texts within the culture wars and the broader framework of American politics and international relations, Biesecker argues that the return of the Good War to public memory was an effect of the fall of the Soviet Union. Once America's Other was gone, a new narrative was needed to maintain American identity. By highlighting the potent forms of American exceptionalism running through these texts, Biesecker shows how these reconstructions of World War II functioned as civic lessons, teaching the American public how a good citizen ought to live, solidifying the official remembrance of World War II, and perhaps most importantly, advancing a neoliberal nationalist politics.By tracing the links between the popular memory of the war and an ethnonational state ideology, Biesecker not only uncovers the source of the MAGA movement but also underscores the power of public memory in shaping national identity. This book will interest historians as well as students and scholars in the fields of US politics and communication studies.

  • - Music and the Making of America's Soldiers
    av David Suisman
    394,-

An original history of music and its consequences in the ranks of the US military. Since the Civil War, the United States military has used music for everything from recruitment and training to signaling and mourning. "Reveille" has roused soldiers in the morning and "Taps" has marked the end of a long day. Soldiers have sung while marching, listened to phonographs and armed forces radio, and filled the seats at large-scale USO shows. Whether the sounds came from brass instruments, weary and homesick singers, or a pair of heavily used earbuds, where there was war, there was music too. Instrument of War is a first-of-its-kind study of music in the lives of American soldiers. Historian David Suisman traces how the US military used--and continues to use--music to train soldiers and regulate military life, and how soldiers themselves have turned to music to cope with the emotional and psychological traumas of war. Although musical practices have been part of war since time immemorial, the significance of the US military as a musical institution has rarely been recognized. Suisman also reveals a darker history of music, specifically how musical practices have enabled the waging of war. Instrument of War challenges assumptions that music is inherently a beneficent force in the world, demonstrating how deeply music has been entangled in large-scale state violence. Whether it involves chanting "Sound off!" in basic training, turning on a radio, or listening to a playlist while out on patrol, the sound of music has long resonated in soldiers' wartime experiences. Now we can finally hear it.

Drawing from his perilous career investigating the frontiers of the Russian empire, Zygar reveals how 350 years of propaganda, bad historical scholarship, folk tales and fantasy spurred his nation into war with Ukraine.A noted expert on the Kremlin with unparalleled access to hundreds of players in the current conflict - from politicians to oligarchs, gangsters to comedians (not least Zelensky himself) - Zygar chronicles the power struggles from which today's politics grew, and digs out the essential truths from behind layers of seductive legend. By surveying the strange, complex record of Russo-Ukrainian relations, WAR AND PUNISHMENT reveals exactly how the largest nation on Earth lost its senses. A work of history can't undo the past or transform the present, but sometimes it can shape the future.

The Italian occupation of Albania, which took place in April 1939, is a subject little covered in most texts pertaining to the history of our armed forces and is often mentioned in a few lines or described as an action of little importance and without difficulty. In reality, the invasion of the Kingdom of Albania was a wake-up call and showed all the inefficiency of the Italian Royal Armed Forces in a modern war as the Second World War would later be, which saw the Kingdom of Italy suffer defeat after defeat. What was supposed to be a 'walk in the park' cost the blood of Italian soldiers and sailors, especially in the area of Durres, and only the weakness of the military apparatus of the small Balkan state would not make the Italians pay dearly for the poor organization of the operation and logistical problems. The book, after a description of pre-1939 events, will focus on the stages of the invasion and then move on to a description of the integration of the Albanian armed forces into those of Italy.
