Circa 1974, the year of mandatory integration, Bo Willims a High School football star at Grimsley High School, Greensboro, N.C., suffered a career-ending injury. He was later falsely accused of drug possession and raping his white girlfriend after their car caught fire in a local park. The judge gave him the option to enter the military or go to jail. Reluctantly, he joined the Army. While working as an orderly room clerk, he responded to a recruiting flyer searching for candidates to apply to the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID). He was selected and completed the course at Fort McClellan Alabama. His first duty station was Karshrue Germany, while using unconventional investigative methods, he was directly responsible for capturing a dangerous criminal whose tainted drugs caused the overdose deaths of two Army soldiers. With accolades in hand, he was stationed at Fort Stewart GA, as a member of a drug suppression Joint Task Force, his undercover efforts led to the demise of a cartel-influenced drug gang operating on and off Post. Shortly after Operation Just Cause, where the U.S. invaded Panama and removed Manuel Noriega, the news media reported soldiers were shipping cocaine back in duffle bags through the APO. DEA working on a tip, in Sunrise Florida, busted an Army Staff Sergeant with $150k in a shoe box, that tested positive for cocaine. He confessed and agreed to assist CID with identifying his suppliers. BO Williams was hand-picked for the assignment. The result was the largest drug bust in the southeast at the time.

  • - The 13th/18th Royal Hussars Through Dunkirk, D-Day and the Liberation of Europe
    av Andrew May
    344,-

When the amphibious Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman tanks of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO) touched down on the sand of Sword Beach as the vanguard of the D-Day invasion, ahead of the infantry and Commandos, it was the culmination of an evolution spanning several years. Switching roles from a mounted regiment in India, into a mechanised, armoured cavalry regiment, they fought in France in 1940, then faced an uncertain future, after evacuating through Dunkirk. However, the 13th/18th would subsequently be selected to spearhead the assault on Sword Beach in new, top secret amphibious tanks. Having successfully secured the beach on D-Day, the Regiment became heavily engaged in the battle for Normandy, earning themselves an excellent reputation with the infantry brigades which they supported, before pushing north into the Fatherland. Their casualties from D-Day onwards amounted to 142 Hussars lost, 236 wounded, with many gallantry awards received. In addition to recording the Regiment's achievements during World War II, the story includes the personal testimonies of many of the Regiment's soldiers and officers throughout the war, along with many previously unpublished photographs.

  • - 1775 to the Present Day
    av Jeremy Black
    554 - 1 940

Now in its fourth edition, Introduction to Global Military History is an accessible, up-to-date account of modern warfare from the eighteenth century to the present. The book engages with the social, cultural, political and economic contexts of war, examining the causes and consequences of conflict beyond national and chronological boundaries. It challenges the dominant Western-centric, technologically focused view of military history and instead emphasises the ranges of circumstances faced by both Western and non-Western powers and the absence of any one direction of development. The chapters present integrated discussions of land, naval and air conflicts, addressing continuities and the ways in which common experiences affected different spheres. This edition revises the text throughout, has increased focus on the developments in the 2000s and 2010s, and adds a new chapter on the 2020s.Supported by a variety of illustrations, maps and case studies, this study is a valuable resource for students of military history and general readers alike.

  • - Poisoned Victory in the Pacific War
    av Nicholas Evan Sarantakes
    360,-

A thrilling and in-depth look at the battle for Manila, the third-bloodiest battle of World War II and the culmination point of the war in the Pacific theater. In 1945 the United States and Japan fought the largest and most devastating land battle of their war in the Pacific, a month-long struggle for the city of Manila. The only urban fighting in the Pacific theater, the Battle of Manila was the third-bloodiest battle of World War II, behind Leningrad and Berlin. It was a key piece of the campaign to retake control of the Philippine Islands, which itself signified the culmination of the war, breaking the back of Japanese strategic power and sealing its outcome. In The Battle of Manila, Nicholas Sarantakes offers the first in-depth account of this crucial campaign from the American, Japanese, and, significantly, Filipino perspective. Fighting was building by building, with both sides forced to adapt to the new combat environment. None of the U.S. units that entered Manila had any previous training in urban warfare--yet, Sarantakes shows, they learned on the fly how to use tanks, flamethrowers, air, and artillery assets in support of infantry assaults. Their effective use of these weapons was an important factor in limiting U.S. casualties, even as it may also have contributed to a catastrophic loss of civilian lives. The battle was a strategic U.S. victory, but Sarantakes reveals how closely it hinged upon the interplay between a series of key decisions in both U.S. and Japanese headquarters, and a professional culture in the U.S. military that allowed the Americans to adapt faster and in more ways than their opponents. Among other aspects of the conflict, The Battle of Manila explores the importance of the Filipino guerillas on the ground, the use of irregular warfare, the effective use of intelligence, the impact of military education, and the limits of Japanese resistance. Ultimately, Sarantakes shows Manila to be a major turning in both World War II and American history. Once the United States regained control of the city, Japan was in a checkmate situation. Their defeat was certain, and it was clear that the United States would be the dominate political power in post-war Asia and the Pacific. This fascinating account shines a light on one of the war's most under-represented and highly significant moments.

  • av Larry D Cripps
    328,-

Sometimes, the greatest (and only) thing we can offer is ourselves. When Larry Cripps was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he had little idea of what lay in store for him and his future comrades, both on and off the battlefield. At the risk of his own life, in exchange for a future he couldn't imagine, Larry began a journey that would go much further than the jungles of Southeast Asia, the deserts of the Middle East, or anywhere else he deployed in service of his country. Progressing from armored cavalry to the Navy Chaplain Corps, Larry discovered that the wildest war zones of all were the hearts and minds of the service members he counseled and cared for. They were men and women who desperately sought healing. Frustrated troops who demanded truth from leaders. People wounded and haunted by the savagery of warfare, who longed to regain a healthy sense of perspective and self-image. Fellow veterans who risked life and limb, and sidestepped death - only to spend the rest of their lives wondering what it all meant. Family members trying to stay ahead of life's demands, civilian or military, and facing the challenges of relating to their loved ones in uniform. Larry's journey would take him to a place of rare distinction - serving and praying for warriors and their families through every US military conflict and front, from 1965 through to the present day.The Hope of War offers a way out of madness to anyone blindsided by hardship, trauma, tragedy or transition. In a manner both uplifting and raw, Larry's journey reminds readers to dig deep beneath the "surface issues" of politics, history, current events and public opinion, to look for the real gold of growth and maturity under fire, according to a timeless, Biblical model.Amidst the raucous backdrop of competing visions and interpretations of a dark time in American history, The Hope of War cuts through the noise and invites young readers to take their first step toward uncharted destiny, through a mysterious path they don't yet understand. It reminds older readers of the status they earned by responding to the challenge, and how crucial their experience and wisdom are in this hour of history. The Hope of War is a quintessential, timeless and real-life tale of an average person, forged into an extraordinary leader, trusted by senior commanders, shaped by forces and events far beyond his comprehension or control - who found life-changing moments, simply by saying "Yes."

    av Steven R Stotelmyer
    449,-

The Battle of Antietam stands out as the single bloodiest day's combat in American history. More people were killed or injured on September 17, 1862, than any other day in our nation's entire history. With 23,000 casualties it is understandable that this single event tends to take the spotlight in the Maryland Campaign of 1862. However, Robert E. Lee did not begin crossing the Potomac on September 4. 1862, just so he could fight at Sharpsburg 13 days later with his back to that same river. From Frederick to Sharpsburg sheds light on some of the other participants and events long obscured in the shadow cast by America's bloodiest day. From Frederick to Sharpsburg: People, Places, and Events of the Maryland Campaign Before Antietam, will make a welcomed addition to the library of any student of Antietam, the Maryland Campaign, or the Civil War.

  • - Resistance Through Remembrance
    av Daniel Palacios González
    1 371,-

This book narrates how, beginning in 1936, bodies buried in mass graves during the Spanish War and subsequent dictatorship were turned into monuments. The book describes how the production of monuments evolved and what forms this process and these monuments took; it examines how the monuments were incorporated into society and used to influence public opinion; and it argues that this process was not simply based on the formal logic of tradition but instead reflected a conscious plan with a specific and rational end goal. As such, this book puts forward the idea that the monument as a material object became an expression of the historical consciousness of its producers, relating how different actors communicated their memories into meaningful gestures while limited by the material reality of integrating the bodies into a novel artefact. Finally, it contends that the people creating these monuments did not just bury their dead according to a funerary tradition but also sought to influence society.

  • - Vietnam and the Journey Toward Redemption
    av John Rozich
    414,-

This is the story of an individual, not yet a man, placed within the confines of duty, honor and doubt. It is a familiar tale reflecting the communal burden each older generation so frequently imposes on their children. Aging yet failed wisdom unable, perhaps unwilling to protect their young. A summation in understanding that decisions made within the boundaries of national interest have very real, often horrific, human consequences. As graying men sat in Washington DC in the 1950's they mulled their self-important, all-knowing strategies of global priorities; 'we know best for all.' And thus, repeated within the fabric of history those most malleable and innocent were sent into the conflict of their time. Its name was Viet Nam.No matter how certain the cause, it was to ultimately end as an ill-defined and vaporous disarray of ersatz priorities; within a decade its very substance had withered. And 55,000 Americans lay silent. But for one man, it was a journey filled with paradox. Of the love between a son and the mother he never knew. A son forcibly taken from her; now a man seeking forgiveness for actions taken within the obligations of honor and duty. It is the discovery of love for a woman who nearly destroyed him, and a final requital for the death of his mentor. It is a common journey for those of our children asked to shoulder their nation's legacy bound in difficult if not appalling deeds. For them as for this man, it is a struggle along a path often shadowed in mendacious absolution offered by their nation, now fatigued if not bored by the legacy once sought. It is accepting the need to cleanse one's soul before rebirth and a purposeful future can be achieved. What we ask of our children. And the redemption, the metanoia we owe, is an unending cycle within our collective experience. Let us not forget.

This Casebook provides a summary of twenty-three insurgencies and revolutions and covers the period 1962-2009; the goal of the book is to introduce the reader to modern-style irregular and unconventional warfare, as well as to act as an informational resource on these particular cases. While not trying to provide an in-depth analysis of any case, the intent was to provide enough background material and description of the revolution to allow comparisons and analysis of broader ideas and insights across this broad spectrum of cases. If further study is desired, each case contains a detailed bibliography that points toward what was found to be the most helpful and insightful sources. All cases in this book are presented in a standardized format, a research framework, making it easy to compare various aspects of revolutionary warfare. The Methodology section will define what each section of the framework provides and our justification for its inclusion. All of the sources used in preparation of this Casebook are unclassified and for the most part are secondary rather than primary sources. Where we could, we used primary sources to describe the objectives of the revolution and to give a sense of the perspective of the revolutionary or another participant or observer. This limitation to unclassified sources allows a much wider distribution of these case studies, while hindering the inclusion of revealing or perhaps more accurate information. The ARIS Project endeavored to use sources believed to be reliable and accurate. These studies are also meant to be strictly neutral in terms of bias toward the revolution or those to whom the revolution is directed. The ARIS Project sought to balance any interpretive bias in their sources and in the case presentation so that it may be studied without any indication by the author of moral, ethical, or other judgment.

This groundbreaking work, Undergrounds in Insurgent, Revolutionary, and Resistance Warfare, was written in response to the communist insurgency in South Vietnam. It sought to categorize underground movements encountered during the previous 30 years in fine detail so that the establishment and operations of subsequent underground arms of guerrilla forces railed against Free World Forces could be anticipated, located and disrupted or destroyed. Its secondary aim was to doctinalize tactics, techniques and procedures for the establishment of underground organizations in any given country in support of US Special Forces or Intelligence Community operations. One of the most important, and yet least known aspects of unconventional warfare is the underground. An underground is a clandestine arm of the unconventional warfare organization which sits out of sight of the general public and strives to remain as invisible to enemy security forces for as long as possible. For every guerrilla fighter, this report surmises that there are a minimum of seven underground operatives working to support the guerrilla's mission through providing logistics, communications, recruitment, intelligence, safe havens, medical support or covert operations.Conflict Research Group is proud to bring this book back into print as it should form a keystone of the research library of any practitioner or scholar in the unconventional warfare or security policy fields.

The Mare's Nest is about twelve thousand German scientists and engineers laboured with sixteen thousand slave labourers to build the secret weapons that would reduce London to ruins: how close they came to success! Here is the full story written from secret British and German documents, and from the private papers of the scientists and war leaders who mounted the British Intelligence counter-offensive.In Germany inter-service rivalry undermined the competing weapons projects until all were too late; and in Britain the most tempestuous dispute of the war thundered along the corridors of Whitehall, while senior defense scientists waged their personal battles. For a year, the British War Cabinet was led to believe that the German rockets were a well-planned giant hoax, a 'mare's nest' as the Prime Minister's personal Scientific Adviser, the controversial Lord Cherwell, put it on October 25, 1943.Here are the secret disputes and intrigues that rocked the War Cabinet for eighteen vital months of the Second World War. Here too is the full story of the heroic R.A.F. Bomber Command assault on the Peenemünde rocket installations. This narrative of the tremendous duel between Hitler with his research scientists and engineers and the British Government with its Intelligence and Scientific experts and codebreakers, will enhance Mr. Irving's reputation for brilliant investigation of little known aspects of the last war.

The eradication of racism, particularly anti-Black racism, is an imperative and ongoing struggle for a just and equitable society. This deeply ingrained social issue has plagued human history, leading to severe injustices and the systemic denial of basic human rights and dignity to people of color. Systemic racism perpetuates stereotypes, gross insensitivity, and neglect towards Black individuals and communities, further perpetuating a cycle of discrimination and inequality. One of the pillars upholding these injustices is the pervasive White Supremacy system, which has historically been designed to maintain power and privilege for those of European descent. To dismantle this deeply rooted system, society must engage in profound self-reflection, reevaluate its institutions, and enact policies and initiatives that challenge and rectify the systemic biases that have marginalized people of color. Only through collective efforts, education, and a commitment to equity can we hope to break the chains of racism, restoring human rights and dignity for all, regardless of their racial background.

Despite the prevailing view that the Marine Corps bore the brunt of the fighting in the Pacific War, the men of the US Army played a decisive role in the conflict. Indeed, GIs did most of the war's heavy lifting on the ground by conducting more amphibious assaults and prosecuting more operations than the Marines. By the end of the war there were 1.77 million U.S. Army troops in the Pacific and Asia, compared to the USMC's 484,000. The Pacific was as much the Army's war as the fighting in the European theater. The U.S. Army deployed twenty combat divisions to fight in the Pacific, including famous ones such as the 1st Cavalry Division and the 25th "Tropic Lightning" Division. Most were infantry, and included Regular, National Guard and draftee divisions. The divisions were deployed and maneuvered by theater, field army, and corps commanders around the Pacific's geostrategic chessboard to battle and defeat the Japanese. The Army may have wanted its divisions to be interchangeable and uniform, but this proved impossible. Their quality and performance depended upon their resources, the geography and terrain on which they fought, experience, leadership, and organizational culture. Historians, though, have made little effort to examine their records in a systematic way before now. In addition, almost all of the Army's divisions, some after admittedly rocky starts, became units capable of winning their engagements. Indeed, not a single Army division fighting the Japanese during the American counteroffensive across the Pacific was completely destroyed in combat. Whatever problems these divisions faced tended to grow out of the society that produced them, not fundamental flaws in Army doctrine. This is a tribute to the Army as a whole and to the twenty divisions that the Army deployed against the Japanese. This new history uses a narrative approach to describe and analyze each division's history, characteristics, and battles during the conflict, concluding with an assessment of their battlefield records, taking into account the innumerable factors affecting their combat performance.
