  • - A Lucky Evan's Life Story
    av R K Clark
    190,-

Christmas time is supposed to be fun, right? Parties, presents and time with the ones you love is all part of the holiday season. A time to relax, have a party and get all your fun in before the year ends. Well -- for me, Christmas is more of a minefield. I'm Evan and I have to navigate this more closely than I have to for anything else. My whammy -- the collective bad luck I seem to bestow on unwilling people -- goes into overdrive from the stress of the season. It gets so bad that things fall apart around me without my wanting it. All I want is to get through these two weeks and survive the holidays. Santa, Schadenfreude, and Sugar cookies -- ho, ho, ho indeed.

Companion animals come in many forms. We usually think of companion animals as dogs and cats but I personally have met companion animals in other forms: chickens, a goat, a snake, an opposum, eagles, toads, and rats as well as dogs and cats. Most of these encounters are happy ones though often stranger than fiction! These are my true stories of special animals that have graced or perhaps distrubed my life and defininetly left lasting impressions forever. My life is better for each encounter, each relationship, each joy or sorrow.

    - Vol. 22 Paperback Edition
    av Charles M Schulz
    275,-

In the 22nd volume of The Complete Peanuts, new in paperback, Schulz's cartooning has never been more expressive, and the strip continues to surprise and delight. Welcome Andy to the cast of characters, as all three dog brothers reunite to cheer on Snoopy, who bounces back from a bout of pneumonia. In other news, Charlie Brown is a baseball hero after hitting a game-winning home run. Linus lobbies the White House to nominate Snoopy for an open Supreme Court seat (alas, he doesn't make the cut). And Woodstock discovers his long-lost grandfather's diary, recounting the indignities of life trapped in a (gasp!) birdcage. The Complete Peanuts is the publishing project that launched a renaissance in comic strip publishing and the only place Charles M. Schulz's classic has ever been collected in its entirety. Featuring impeccable production values, each volume of this series features two successive years of newspaper strips (dailies and Sundays), plus bonus material such as celebrity introductions, interviews, and a brief biography of Schulz himself.

  • - A Crime Story
    av Robert Thomas
    178,-

A small-time crook, who has suffered a lifetime of harassment due to an odd physical handicap, suddenly decides to take his anger out on something near and dear to the City's citizens. He becomes a serial killer of high-end booze, slaughtering hundreds of bottles at various liquor stores, and creating a citywide panic in the process. The Mayor and Police Chief, who had previously adopted a policy of being soft-on-crime, are outraged... mainly because they are both avid bourbon drinkers. They are determined to capture and punish this scofflaw, Albert "Third Finger" Welge. But Third Finger is clever and illusive. So the authorities must use all their skills and resources to track him down before he can extinguish every last bottle of great bourbon and relegate the public to drinking gin and tonics.Third Finger is a crime story, employing a touch of satire, sarcasm, irreverent humor, and political incorrectness in framing this kind of threat to a cornerstone of our culture... our booze. It's a fun read for anyone who loves bourbon... or even gin and tonic lovers, for that mater.

  • - Satirical Writings: The Kurt Tucholsky Reader

    219,-

Kurt Tucholsky was a brilliant satirist, poet, storyteller, lyricist, pacifist, and Democrat; a fighter, lady's man, reporter, and early warner against the Nazis who hated and loathed him and drove him out of Germany after his books were burned in 1933. His contemporary Erich Kaestner called him a "small, fat Berliner," who "wanted to stop a catastrophe with his typewriter." The New York Times hailed him as "one of the most brilliant writers of republican Germany. He was a poet as well as a critic and was so versatile that he used five or six pen names. As Peter Panter he was an outstanding essayist who at one time wrote topical sketches in the Vossische Zeitung, which ceased to appear under the Nazi regime; as Theobald Tiger he wrote satirical poems that were frequently interpreted by popular actors in vaudeville and cabartes, and as Ignatz Wrobel he contributed regularly to the Weltbühne, an independent weekly that was one of the first publications prohibited by the Hitler government." Tucholsky, who occupied the center stage in the tumultuous political and cultural world of 1920s Berlin, still emerges as an astonishingly contemporary figure. As an angry truth-teller, he pierced the hypocrisy and corruption around him with acute honesty. Imagine a writer with the acid voice of Christopher Hitchens and the satirical whimsy of Jon Stewart, combined with the iconoclasm of Bill Maher. That's Tucholsky in a nutshell. Like Hitchens, Tucholsky wrote a mixture of literary essays, social observations, and political commentary. His irony made the line between his "serious writing" and his "entertainments" almost invisible. The fashionable outsider watched the political "center" disappear, and, in the end, he found himself catapulted out of society altogether. His career was sandwiched between the two most deadly events of his century: the bloodbath of World War I and the scourge of Nazism. Just as the first war launched Hemingway's lifelong career as a wounded tough guy with a soft spot for guns and broads, Tucholsky discovered the reflexes of an escape artist. He was equally elusive as a writer. In today's world, a journalist isn't supposed to write plays, and a playwright isn't welcomed as a novelist. But in 1920s Berlin, Tucholsky was dealing with postwar realities that required shouting from the rooftops, and any rooftop would do. Kurt Tucholsky is one of Weimar Germany's most celebrated literary figures, loved by his many readers and hated by the Nazis. The poet, journalist, and satirist who was at the center of the tumultuous political and cultural world of 1920s Berlin still emerges as an astonishingly contemporary figure. But he was more than just an angry truth-teller; he was also one of the funniest satirical writers of his era, depicting everyday lives during the rise of modernity. The iconic translation of Harry Zohn, a literary figure from Vienna himself, presented Tucholsky to an American audience for the first time. Long out of print, Zohn's book is now being republished in a new edition.

  • - Postmodern "Truthiness" and Civic Engagement
    av James E Caron
    331,-

Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, and Jimmy Kimmel--these comedians are household names whose satirical takes on politics, the news, and current events receive some of the highest ratings on television. In this book, James E. Caron examines these and other satirists through the lenses of humor studies, cultural theory, and rhetorical and social philosophy, arriving at a new definition of the comic art form. Tracing the history of modern satire from its roots in the Enlightenment values of rational debate, evidence, facts, accountability, and transparency, Caron identifies a new genre: "truthiness satire." He shows how satirists such as Colbert, Bee, Oliver, and Kimmel--along with writers like Charles Pierce and Jack Shafer--rely on shared values and on the postmodern aesthetics of irony and affect to foster engagement within the comic public sphere that satire creates. Using case studies of bits, parodies, and routines, Caron reveals a remarkable process: when evidence-based news reporting collides with a discursive space asserting alternative facts, the satiric laughter that erupts can move the audience toward reflection and possibly even action as the body politic in the public sphere. With rigor, humor, and insight, Caron shows that truthiness satire pushes back against fake news and biased reporting and that the satirist today is at heart a citizen, albeit a seemingly silly one. This book will appeal to anyone interested in and concerned about public discourse in the current era, especially researchers in media studies, communication studies, political science, and literary and cultural studies.

Because he told me not to. And I'm very good at keeping secrets. (Especially the one about how he flew into my headlights. I didn't immediately blurt that to his chihuahua shifter and vampire cat friends at. all.)I know I'm in over my head when he announces to his kingdom that I'm his soulmate and blackmails me into playing his "princess."In fact, I think I was in over my head long before I ever stepped foot in Faerie...A scandalous, forced marriage of convenience isn't going to fix that feeling...but maybe, just maybe, the moth faerie prince who looks at me like he's never met another person before can show me the answer I haven't been able to find on my own.Falling in Love with the Moth Faerie Prince is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy with light fantasy elements, neurodivergent characters, and plenty of closed-door sizzle. PLEASE NOTE the main character struggles with depression.
