TELEGRAPH HISTORY BOOK OF THE YEAR How the British might have handled Hitler differently remains one of history's greatest ';what ifs'. Coffee with Hitler tells the astounding and poignant story, for the first time, of a handful of amateur British intelligence agents who wined, dined and befriended the leading National Socialists between the wars. With support from royalty, aristocracy, politicians and businessmen, they hoped to use the much mythologised Anglo-German Fellowship as a vehicle to civilise the Nazis. A pacifist Welsh historian, a Great War flying ace, and a butterfly-collecting businessman offered the British government better intelligence on the horrifying rise of the Nazis than anyone else. Charles Spicer draws on newly discovered primary sources, shedding light on the early career of Kim Philby, Winston Churchill's approach to appeasement, the US entry into the war and the Rudolf Hess affair.

The story is about Paul's life in Kenya, and how his tradition and family background shaped his resolve to acquire modern education. He takes the reader through the various stages of formal education in tandem with Maasai rites of passages that he went through. He describes how colonization influenced education in his country and how it continues to influence wealth distribution and politics. The author is from the Maasai, a pastoralist community who have been able to maintain their culture and traditions despite the pressure exerted on their lifestyle by modernization. He gives a detailed account of the struggle experienced by his culture's gradual transformation in order to conform to the new world order. Traditionally, it was considered sunrise was the beginning of a day, yet in this formal world, a day begins at midnight and ends at the same time. The author illustrates how a father saw an eminent change of his people's culture and what he did to prepare his children for it. As the author was educated, his boundaries expanded and revealed experiences that touched about family, ethnicity, Nationality and to some degree, race.

An eyewitness account of the forgotten Italian front in World War One. Perfect for fans of Alvin York, Matthew Rozell and Barbara Tuchman. After having survived the Somme and Passchendaele in the muddy fields of northern France and Belgium during 1916 and 1917 Norman Gladden and the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers were sent south to bolster Italian defences against Austro-German forces. Before Gladden arrived on this front the Italians had been crushingly defeated at the Battle of Caporetto meaning that Britain's allies were in urgent need for reinforcements on the Grappa-Piave line. Over the course of the final year of the war, Gladden and his fellow soldiers held back Austrian offenses before contributing to Lord Cavan's forcing of the Piave in October 1918, the first and most important phase in a series of operations which would culminate in the complete collapse of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Through Across the Piave Gladden charts his experiences of what this Italian front was like and reveals how it contrasted to his previous experiences at the Somme and Ypres. 'excellent account' Military Affairs Across the Piave is a vital book for all interested in the history of the First World War as it uncovers an infantry soldier's viewpoint of the often-forgotten Italian front. This book is the third part of Norman Gladden's World War One trilogy, Full Pack - A Private's War, preceded by The Somme, 1916 and Ypres, 1917. A portion of the revenue from every sale of each book in this trilogy goes to The National Trust.

A full-scale biography of Henry Hastings Sibley?congressman, army general, and Minnesota's first governor.Congressman, governor, military leader, and senior statesman?few people had a longer or more influential role in the shaping of the state of Minnesota than Henry Hastings Sibley (1811?91). Sibley's history reveals universal tensions about the duality of the nineteenth-century frontiersman who is at once a trade partner of the Indian/European/Métis worlds and the conquering government official of the ever-expanding colonization of the American West. Rhoda Gilman spent more than thirty years examining Sibley?through hints and fragments of stories that Sibley himself left in articles, an unfinished autobiography, and scores of family letters?and uncovers in this perceptive biography the complexities of a man who embodied these clashing extremes.Gilman sets Sibley against the tapestry of trade, politics, frontier expansion, and intercultural relations in the Upper Mississippi valley, and reminds us that throughout his life Sibley was poised to become a national figure but always chose to remain in the place he loved and the state he helped to found.

Shortly after Carlos Hamilton began his medical practice in Houston, he inherited an over-sized piano that had belonged to his great-grandmother. The difficulty in moving the instrument, even in the 20th century, made him wonder how-and why-a family in 1857 would move it from North Carolina to a rural east Texas plantation so that a ten-year-old child could study music. Although Berta Smith Wootters had died many decades before Hamilton was born, her children continued to express great affection and admiration for her. Her husband, John Wootters, had died young, likely from complications of a Civil War wound, yet she persevered, managing her affairs and guiding all her children to university educations and productive lives. Wanting to discover more about the life of this strong woman, Hamilton traveled to Crockett, Texas where he met Edgar Pouncey, a descendant of a family of slaves who had come toTexas with the Smith family. As Pouncey related stories of the Smith family over a hundred years later, he spoke with respect and warmth. According to Pouncey, the Smiths' provisions for their former slaves allowed them to found a church and a school that still played vital roles in the community. The insight gained on this visit set the author on a decades long journey to understand his forbearers and their turbulent and tragic times. A Rose Blooms in Texas is the culmination of his meticulous research on the life of Berta Smith Wootters and the story begins with her as a student at Fairfield Female College. Hamilton presents the narrative as historical fiction and augments it with original letters and documents. What emerges is a compelling picture of life in East Texas during the Civil War and the strength of character of a woman who was able to preserve her family's values of education and enlightened treatment of others-and her beloved piano-for future generations.

Dear Reader: I am the oldest of four girls and the co-author of this book, Ella Cosby, is the next oldest. Because we are only two years apart in age, we were very close growing up and spent a lot of time together. I noticed that Ella enjoyed drawing and exploring the great outdoors, always looking for an adventure or something to draw. When we were growing up, I always knew that my sister was artistically inclined. She loved to draw and eventually began painting. She was very good, even at a young age. She enjoyed painting pictures of people mostly, as they related to her heritage and her experience as a child growing up with three sisters Eventually, Ella began taking pictures with a disposable camera. She enjoyed that very much and soon purchased a better camera. She would take pictures of just about anything and anybody. It became her passion to capture people, places and things on camera. When the cell phone was discovered, she began taking pictures with her phone. Sometimes she would have both camera and phone taking pictures. Every day I see people doing great things, and it gives me great pleasure to write this forward for one of those persons. I have observed how much Ella loves taking pictures; it has become her passion. This book shows how much she enjoys it and how good she is at it. Ella and Vivian grew up in rural Pittsylvania County, Virginia, with two younger sisters and one brother. Their parents were hard workers who did what they needed to do in order to take care of their family. Vivian was the most studious child and Ella was more of a tomboy who enjoyed nature. At an early age, Ella began taking pictures, while Vivian enjoyed reading and writing. Bothe of the sisters still live in Pittsylvania County very close to one another and their two sisters. They enjoy making people happy and serving others in different capacities. At an early age, they were taught by their mother how to cook, clean, sew and how to become self-sufficient. They have walked in their late mother's shies and become true missionaries in their community. Ella has one sone who lives in Florida. Vivian is the proud mother of one son, a daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren who live in Florida.

William Adams (1823 - 1904) is probably best known from his locomotive designs for the London & South Western Railway. The years at Nine Elms were the culmination of career which began formally in marine engineering, including a period at sea with the Royal Sardinian Navy, encompassed civil engineering and surveying before joining the North London Railway as locomotive, carriage and wagon superintendent. He has been described as the father of the suburban train, an inventive engineer, who pioneered the use of continuous train brakes, developed well designed, free-steaming locomotive boilers for services requiring rapid acceleration and frequent stops, and his invention of a bogie with controlled side-play revolutionized future locomotive design. His next move was to the Great Eastern Railway where his designs met with mixed success, before moving south of the Thames to Nine Elms. Here, over five hundred locomotives were built to his designs, with his later express classes regarded by many as his greatest achievement.Adams also proved himself a very capable designer in developing locomotive and carriage works at all three railways, improving efficiency and reducing costs. This book tells the story of a genial man with a love of music, who was undoubtedly one of the finest late Victorian locomotive engineers.

Sarah E. Walters' unusual book from a century ago reads better than a current novel, yet an appendix of newspaper articles from the period verifies that everything she says is true. Her story is that of an extraordinary ordinary woman with elementary schooling who married a man of her dreams, a doctor, no less, who, in reality, and despite his redeeming qualities, turned out to be an alcoholic, carouser and womanizer who disappeared until shortly before he died. She fought all along to save their marriage and support their children, cleaning floors, working for a restaurant chain and on steamboats, a dangerous occupation allowed to women in those days. She also fought city hall when her boy became addicted to heroin illegally peddled by the drug store, thanks to unethical officials. And for that she was thrown without a hearing into the infamous madhouse where she wrote her book, hoping all the while to go on a book tour to save others from suffering her similar ordeals, but she died while cleaning a floor at the height of the Spanish Influenza. Her book did not see the light of day until this day, and is offered by her great grandson with great respect for good women.
