He is captured and forced to begin a Death March, escapes into the jungles and continues to fight for three years. Having been shot and on the verge of dying, he is helped by a Filipina girl and her family who have also narrowly escaped the Japanese. He is eventually evacuated back to the states to recover. Thirty years later, during the peak of the Vietnam War, Edward Higginbotham Jr. is drafted by the Army, enlists in the Air Force and sent to Clark AFB. While there, he meets a Filipina girl he falls in love with, but he must return to the states to marry his high school fiance. After returning and learning they have grown apart, he returns to the Philippines to marry the Filipina girl he left behind. Norma Jean's Sun, Memoir ( Based on a True Story )"A Wonderful commentary on the very things that make us all human" "Brave honesty of confession, makes the book unique" "Touching story, full of hope" The story is not only convincingly true, but will rivet the reader with its genuine and unassuming pathos. It is this kind of brave honesty of confession and growing philosophy that makes the book unique. Miraculous tale of how a boy, born into unimaginable physical and emotional pain and destined to be a misfit, finds his way in a world of "others." Few could survive so many torturous years of surgical intervention and a ensuing lifelong struggle with drugs and alcohol addiction and come out ahead. This moving tale reveals not only the struggle and heartrending elements of generational lives "gone wrong," but also the love and growth of a human being overcoming the odds and determined to find a way to live life to the fullest. Based on a true story, the author's unapologetic prose prompts enduring ethical questions and makes a gripping, personal read. Norma Jean's Sun is painfully reflective yet ultimately hopeful, a story told through the eyes of a boy who believes he has been mistakenly born into the world and a man who conquers physical and emotional injustice--and thrives. The reader will be challenged to answer the difficult questions of right and wrong as they may apply to his or her own life. It is clear that it is the hope of this author that the reader's conclusions will lead to a more fulfilled view of the "parallel beauty that lives just beneath the surface for us all."

  • - Essays and Escapades
    av Kurt W Zimmerman
    244,-

My essays and escapades span over thirty years of rare book hunting--an exciting journey that is ongoing. Many of my friends are rare book people, and much of my free time revolves around bookish pursuits. I can't recall a day without thinking about a book and seldom without handling one. I write regularly on my blog about rare books I've found and their history. Recently, my wife and I began plans to expand our library space by converting the attic above the garage, so it seems inevitable that the book you hold in your hand would come to fruition. If you're already a rare book hunter no further prelude is needed. If you have found this book through curiosity or happenstance, and it creates a spark within, I strongly encourage you to follow your own book hunting path. The rewards are great and the space concerns never-ending. Kurt Zimmerman is a highly regarded book collector and author. He has been collecting for over thirty years in two areas: association items related to book collecting history (currently 7,000+ items) and first editions of Latin American literature (over 2,000 items). He received his Master's in Library and Information Science degree from UT-Austin while completing a three year internship at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. There he learned bibliography and rare books from the best in the field. He worked in the rare book trade and as director of the rare books & maps department at Butterfield & Butterfield auction house (now Bonham's) in San Francisco. Zimmerman is a co-founder of the Book Hunters Club of Houston. His established is popular blog bookcollectinghistory.com in 2011. The author can be reached directly at zbooks@yahoo.com.

  • - Mis primeros catorce años
    av Antonio Cupeiro Fernández
    199,-

  • - a Memoir
    av Wanda Colón-Mollfulleda
    197,-

Confronted with the passing of her mother in 2016, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease, Dr. Wanda Colón-Mollfulleda turned her grief into action. Longing for the closure she did not believe possible, she embarked on a multi-year project that culminated with writing this memoir. Dr. Colón-Mollfulleda captures her mother's gradual decline in memory as well as its impact on her life and her entire family. Like a winding road, the story twists and turns as it portrays the peaks and valleys of a life short-changed by the ravages of an unforgiving, untimely disease. Told with palpable passion through the lens of a doting daughter, JOSEFINA voyages through the open lanes and hidden corners of an exceptional life's journey. With this memoir, the author honors the life of Josefina Cruz Gutiérrez, a daring, kind-hearted, loving, and resourceful warrior woman whose story deserves to be told and retold so that the purity of her essence can be immortalized. A source of inspiration for anyone being afflicted directly or indirectly by Alzheimer's disease, this book includes practical information about delaying and preventing the onset of a brain disease that progressively destroys memory and other critical mental functions. There is no better time than the present to combat Alzheimer's. Whether affecting a loved one, a neighbor, or a stranger, Alzheimer's does not discriminate. Let this book serve as a beacon of light against the darkness of this horrible disease. To make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Josefina, please contact Dr. Wanda Colón-Mollfulleda via email at bjwwassociates@gmail.com or by visiting her website at www.bjwwassociates.com.

  • - An Inspirational Memoir of Discovery, Acceptance, & Growth

    268,-

Have you ever felt bound by your past? Do you ever feel like one of God's least-favored because of your past mistakes? Are you in a battle, living the life you envision and living life through the vision of others? Are you always feeling misunderstood by others? If you were able to answer, "Yes" to at least one of these questions, then this is the book for you. You are not alone. We all reach a point in life where we feel our growth is being stunted. In order to move beyond that place, we must go below the surface and examine possible reasons for our lack of growth. Truthfully Speaking, takes readers on a journey with Dr. Nay as she digs deep into her own roots, allowing readers to identify similar areas within their own lives or the life of a loved one. A raw, authentic, and timely manuscript, Truthfully Speaking is an emotional rollercoaster, filled with laughter, tears, encouragement and numerous examples of God's undying grace and mercy. Like a planted pot, when we notice the leaves are no longer bright, shiny, and flourishing, we must dig up the root to determine what's stunting its growth. We know repotting is necessary when we pull the plant up from the pot and see more roots than soil. When this is the case, repotting is inevitable in order to create more room for growth. Just like the plant, we occasionally need to dig up our own roots to see what's stunting our growth. If we only continue to water the surface, we can't expect growth. We must investigate, "Who are we really? Where did we come from? Why do we do the things we do, the way we do them?" The truth behind the answers to those questions can be found once we accept that we are a culmination of our experiences and relationships. When we begin to examine them in totality, then we can discover our root, thereby discovering our truth!

How many times have you said, or heard, the phrase, "Time passes too quickly?" For those of us who've retired and/or are in our third quarter of the game of life, we know all too well the meaning of this phrase. It seems like just yesterday that we were young, days lasted forever, and we didn't have a care in the world. Now, here we are, looking back on our lives and wondering how the years went by so fast. After retiring, no one ever says they wish they could have worked a few more years. However, I've heard many people say they wished they would have done something different, or they wished they could go back in time and change things; some even have regrets over the past. Hindsight is 20-20, and always will be.I feel like I'm one of the most blessed men on the earth. I'm living in the present and not dwelling on the past. It's been no shoulda, coulda, woulda for me. In addition to having a wonderful wife and marriage, a daughter, son in law and grandchildren, I've had a very rewarding career in our family-owned business that spanned 65 years.I literally went from being born in a small, dirt floor cabin; being drafted into the service by Uncle Sam, and drew unemployment one time for a month, to running a very successful and lucrative business with offices in three different states - Indiana, Kentucky and Texas. The decision to sell the company was made in 2014, and in 2015, I retired from Gohmann Asphalt & Construction, Inc. after some 44 years. This book details my journey through life up to this point. Many of the stories are work related, and some are thoughts and remembrances from my personal life.My goals for the chapters dedicated to the family business, and all the wholly owned subsidiaries, is to preserve them for my grandsons - Masters Alex and George Gohmann Breece - to show them that "Papa John" had a full and prosperous life, a loving family and to all the men, women, children who worked with, and for the family business, who were also considered family. The selling of the business was the most difficult decision I ever had to be part of. My only regret in life was not being able to pass the family business onto the next generation. My Bucket List is three quarters full. Emptying this bucket is my lifelong goal for now.My dear reader friends, I hope you enjoy my story as much as I have putting it - Papa John's Sentimental Memories - in print! For God and Country . . . SEMPER FI! We're all only passing through.

  • - Memoir of a path between lives
    av Peter Simon Mond
    143,-

The Life of a Stone is an unusual spiritual memoir, in which Peter Mond weaves the story of the passage of his soul over two lives. During a past life regression he discovered he had been a Jewish teenager in the Warsaw Ghetto. The memoir spans his past life in the Ghetto and his present life in England and Israel. The Life of a Stone draws significant events and themes of the two lives together under one canopy: From the dilemmas of a young smuggler going back and forth the stone barrier of the Ghetto, to the dilemmas of a boy in Brighton, England, who created an "inner ghetto" built with imaginative stones, to the adult Peter, who in Tzefat, Israel, learnt that stones (a cognate of the Hebrew word understanding) can be used as building blocks to create new connections between events, lives and sources of wisdom. The memoir describes the process over a lifetime of learning to see personal history as a history of discovering meaning through confronting what was hidden and baffling within the events of life. Seemingly meaningless disturbances in life came to reflect encounters between the individual and the Divine; they became a source of revelation.

This is a collection of memories from Chet's mountain cabin lovingly known as Chet's Shanty Shack! As a young man living in New York City, New Year's Eve was a very lonely time for me. I knew that there were celebrations going on in Times Square with large cheering crowds. However, it was not my thing to go there and celebrate. Traditionally, on every New Year's Eve, I would cross Central Park West, the street bordering Central Park and one block from my home on Columbus Avenue. I would then walk on the sidewalk along the park from 84th St. to Columbus Circle at 59th Street, and then walk back. When I looked up at the windows of the large buildings lining Central Park West I could see their windows all lit up with colorful Christmas lights and could see people inside dancing and celebrating. I could see their Christmas trees and remember my thoughts and feelings that someday New Year's Eve would be a very special day for me. This feeling persisted all through my young life and when I came to California, events occurred which turned these thoughts into a reality. This is my story.

"I have embodied decadence. Moral decay, skewed values, poor decisions. All aimed at moving the hell on and overcoming the misery I got buried under after my breakup. But, have I aimed in the right direction? Or is it just a delusion? Because the more I try, the more I feel I have made the wrong choice." The journey through singleness continues. Our author finally lets go of everything and loses himself in the overindulgence of the flesh. The story intensifies as countless women, alcohol and the never-ending cycle of seduction and repulsion take place under the gray skies of Copenhagen, Denmark. Will he be left standing after all is said and done? This book is the culmination of the autobiographical series from this aspiring Chilean writer. A chilling, depressing and, some times, hilarious display of cynicism, sarcasm and brutal honesty. The end of this creative and existential quest won't disappoint you. Not if you are looking to dig deep in the mind (and bed) of the last of the Latinlovers. From Chile to Denmark, to hell and back.

  • - Practical Guide to Memoir Writing
av Gay Ann Kiser M Ed
    205

If you've been grappling with how to write your memoir, this book was written with you in mind. In 2020, I published my own memoir (Take Three) and learned a great deal from going through the process myself. I decided to teach memoir writing classes at our local community college and assist others in sharing their stories. The adults I taught had a host of questions regarding how to write a memoir which others would read. Based on those questions, I wrote this book. The greatest challenge some of you will face is twofold: (1) convincing yourself that what you have to say will resonate with those reading your memoir and that what you say matters; (2) figuring out how to weave your childhood and adulthood memories together in a way which translates into a theme readers will understand. Summaries at the end of each chapter are provided, as well as workbook assignments to keep you, the writer, on track. .

A story about lies and a liar, Liar, Liar, Gown on Fire is a memoir of a lifelong struggle with mental illnesses, specifically bipolar disorder and factitious disorder, more commonly known as Munchausen syndrome. When she was as young as six-years-old, Cindy found a thrill in receiving attention for being sick or injured. Flinging herself off a swing set, hoping to break an arm or leg, she often found herself sitting in the sand, disappointed in her good health. As she grew older and into the painful awkwardness of young-adulthood, the lengths to which Cindy would go to gain "sick sympathy," grew more extreme. Cindy Buckshon's many careers and talents-from nanny, to artist, to bus driver, to wannabe heavy-duty mechanic, to graphic designer-set the stage for an exciting and unconventional life. This memoir is about mental illness, but it doesn't ignore the person behind the disorders; it focuses on a wild journey through a life filled with creativity, psychotic adventures, emotional instability and faith. Written with a frank honesty that allows both humour and pain to shine through, the book is a refreshing read, and will satisfy those curious about a real mental disorder that, ironically, results in pretend illnesses.--------------------------------Liar, Liar, Gown on Fire is a major achievement. As an expert on the topic of people who feign illness for attention, I have been contacted by many sufferers who intend to write memoirs about their experiences with "factitious disorder" (FD)-better known as "Munchausen syndrome." They have wanted to alert others that FD is a true form of mental illness, and that it can be overcome despite the many difficulties that will inevitably arise. But unlike all the others, Cindy Buckshon has not only actually written about her experiences with FD, but done so in a remarkably readable and compelling way. This is a book that immerses the reader in the world not only of FD, but of a bipolar disorder that resulted in some of her greatest challenges. Cindy brings her multi-faceted talents to this book showing me that, despite 25 years of studying mental illness, I still had much to learn from her. Marc D. That's the situation I faced in 2014: get ahead in my career by moving, knowing my family absolutely wasn't going to join me. Go an adventure and, for the first time in my career, have a chance to move beyond cubicle-dwelling drone life, to stop being just the white-collar ditch digger, to have an actual opportunity. I took the chance, making the most of the opportunity, and while the career move didn't pan out into anything great, it gave me a chance to learn more about who I am than is healthy.

Denmark, the land of social welfare, a great community and one of the happiest countries in the world, on the surface sure. What they don't tell you about, is stories like mine, It's not a secret, it's just not a focus, I know that I'm not alone in the things I have experienced and my story might not be the worst, but it's the only one I know in its entirety.I'm tired of people asking me about my story and then getting offended when they hear it and say that I'm stuck in the past, exaggerating or lying.Denmark's child welfare program is broken and so are many facets of the welfare system in Denmark, kids are removed from their families at an alarming rate, in a well meaning attempt to better their lives, but more often than not It ends up destroying them and their family. The jobcentres in Denmark are usually seen as more of a glorified daycare, not producing any results and pretty often makes it more difficult getting a job or education, sometimes destroying people's psyche and future prospects in the process. The municipalities are plagued with misinformation, exaggeration, personal opinion and misconduct. My goal with this book is to not have to tell my story over and over again and hopefully shine a light on some of the things wrong with my beloved country and it is going to be a lot easier to go to a psychologist, now that I can just throw a book at them and not having to repeat myself again and again, just for them to realize it is too much for them to handle, hehe.

A Collection of MemoriesReflections from the years of fulfilling my childhood dreams. Throughout my life I have had many pleasures including sewing, gardening, and redecorating. I harbored the dream of being a nurse since age six. "You've worked hard all your life. Why don't you just take it easy now?" Bill asked me one day when I wanted to go to college at age forty-three. "But if that's what it takes to make you happy, okay." I fulfilled that dream at age forty-eight. After nine decades of living, Bonnie is still going strong.
