  • - A Memoir
    av Kristal M Johnson
    221

Tantrums. Biting. Hitting. Screaming. My son was gifted at all those things. But he didn't stop there. At 5, he assaulted another child at a daycare center, using a pencil as his weapon of choice. I was mortified, scared, and none of the doctors we saw had a clue. At 6 he punched his 1st grade teacher (in the back, no less), and finally got kicked out of school. I was furious, shaking, when I walked into the principal's office, and that's when I saw him. For the first time. My real son. Not the monstrous child I hated and who terrified me. The one who was trapped in that monster's body. My son, the real one, looked up at me, scared, lips trembling. So vulnerable. In that moment, I knew: I had to find out what was wrong with my son and stop the rage consuming him.

From the author: "My purpose in writing Behind Closed Doors and the sequel Journey to the Heart is to provide aftercare, healing, and to touch the reader's heart. We are not alone - I know many people who have experienced similar abuse, and I've been honest and blunt in addressing the humiliation and pain. By the age of four I had attempted to divest myself of a sibling, by the age of seven I was attempting to kill myself and had bigger plans of murder on my mind. I have written this true story of my tormented childhood as a boy raised in a twisted radical Christian household in a secular society. I was constantly being physically beaten by my parents as well as constantly being called a variety of offensive names by my mother; while both my parents also dealt in mental warfare. My mother expressed throughout my childhood that she had "No use for" me, and if begging for mercy I would only hear "Look, I told you that I was going to make your life a living hell for you, and you didn't want to believe me". I was denied access to a physician, even with a broken arm, and was isolated from others aside from family members. I had no toys, Teddy bears or stuffies, and there were no kisses, no hugs, and no other affectionate physical contact in our house. An illegally adopted sister who I was fond of was given back to her parents after forming a sibling bond. I was told the night before at the age of seven by my father that I wasn't to cry as that would make things more difficult for her. At the age of ten I was sexually molested by a person rooming at our house. At the age of twelve my pet rabbit was the surprise supper meal.Throughout this all I was always threatening to "shoot off my little blabber mouth" which would always result in my being threatened as to what would happen to me if I did so as well as the constant chants that no one would believe me.I went off the deep end I my teens as I tried to make sense of things and eventually found and or figured out the answers decades later. All this and much more happened in a good clean radical Christian household where appearances were everything.

  • - A Gripping and Inspirational Journey from Grief to Growth
    av Barbara Umuhoza
    200,-

From the moment that we are born, our lives are molded into different shapes. We take the shape that our family background gives us, and different life experiences either add or deduct from that shape that we were initially given. Over the years, life, too, teaches us many lessons, and these lessons contribute greatly to whom we become, whether good or bad. These lessons are not just for us; however, if shared, they have the potential to improve the lives of others. SHAPED was written to inspire its readers as they glean from a few life lessons on survival, resilience, and finding one's voice in this constantly rushing world. Written during the time of the great COVID-19 pandemic, SHAPED offers insight into the different journeys taken by the author; be from being a child born a refugee, becoming a refugee herself, returning to Rwanda, and building her life back home, all of which, indeed "shaped" her to become the person she is today. In reflecting on her past, present, and hopes for the future, the chapters written across the pages of this book will transport you to an introspective space where you will look at your own life and appreciate it all, for, indeed, in appreciating where far we have come from, do we envision where far we want to go. Everyone has a story to tell, a story of what happened to them and a story of how each of those experiences shaped them. For Barbara, it is all in the book SHAPED. It is her hope that the pages of this book will inspire, motivate and encourage you in one way or another and, above all else, help you reflect on your journey, mourn the pain away, celebrate the joys, and dream of the possibilities that the future holds.
