Inspired by Charles Perrow, Jay M. Gould and Helen Caldicott, Judith Evered shares her personal tragedy related to the 1957 explosion at Windscale Nuclear Power Plant in England. Her memoir recounts the courage, friendships and common ground that united activists throughout the country in planning and executing what is known as the 1981 blockade of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. With all engineering feats, we must take precautionary action when reasonable threats to human safety exist. The seismically active foundation on which Diablo is sited and the questionable safety measures surrounding nuclear power initiated the largest act of nonviolent civil disobedience in U.S. history. A large power corporation, Pacific Gas & Electric and the Nuclear Regulatory Committee conspired to keep the risks of Diablo hidden. Thankfully, an educated populace directed by the Abalone Alliance earnestly set out to prove PG&E and the NRC inadequate in their ability to safeguard against potential terrorist attacks. Land and sea ventures onto the power plant's property reveal disturbing vulnerabilities. Doctors, engineers, teachers, mothers, fathers, children and others were among the peaceful protestors who were not always greeted with the same nonviolent attitude. One almost feels like a part of the action, possibly being handcuffed, dragged and thrown into a detainment camp with Jackson Browne, protest organizers and the many members of colorfully named affinity groups. Police officers and national guardsmen were employed to keep the "bums off the street" as Ronald Reagan called them in 1970.Valuable strategies and tactics are shared with the reader in addition to a history that could easily pass with the generation. If civil disobedience has been shelved in an effort to keep a clear record, this book may counter that by enlivening one of the most democratic forms of assembly: unified nonviolent direct action- real democracy. The hope for peace and security is revived.

There are times when a comforting smile or hand makes all the difference. Times when just the right words jump off the page, speaking as if in answer to a prayer we knowingly sent. Times when someone's poetry brings a chuckle or goes deep and dredges up our own truth. I hope that the words in A Book of Blessings will offer themselves to you in such a fashion. Whatever catches the heart is your truth in that moment. Trust it. Although most of the writing is quite personal, the experience is universal. We are all on this planet as family. We have all had broken hearts, immense losses and times of laughter and beauty. And sooner or later, we discover that all things can be grown into BLESSINGS. --Marcia Beachy

At the age of - well, Dr. Louise Bradley wouldn't say - she woke up in the back of a hideous Hummer limo, the kind used for pornos, proms, weddings, and bar mitzvahs. She had lost her temporary veneers and drooled on her Dolce and Gabbana turquoise silk blouse. She had no idea where the limo was taking her. Was that her mother in the front seat? Dr. Bradley could not remember how she got there. Yes, she drank, took drugs, had sex with many men, and shopped incessantly, but she knew that she wasn't an addict. This is her account of her almost a week - maybe less - in a private rehab facility for the rich in Manhattan. Dr. Bradley's book combines her intimate memoir with adequate psychology, since she prefers the medication prescribed by her psychiatrist as opposed to any long-term therapy. Dr. Bradley tries to understand the difference between falling in love and just becoming addicted to sex. She speaks freely about her obsession and how her Mommy betrayed her. Rather than explore the causes of multiple addictions, Dr. Bradley shows us how to avoid overtreatment and instead moving on with our lives, while exposing the mental health scams along the way. She hits on the importance of knowing when things are transient, and tells a powerful story in the process. Dr. Bradley remembers - as much as she can with sharp dialogue - of the stories she has to endure. While fact-checking proved to be an inconvenience, she strives to get to the truth, at least allowing herself a chance to remember. One Big Chunk is a fast-moving, wild, sexy, and fiercely powerful parody of what passes for a memoir - a hilarious satire that will simultaneously shock while offering a poignant exposé of our mental healthcare system, with a running commentary on the world of fashion.

In this lyric memoir of loss, the narrator's relationship with a beloved brother disintegrates against the backdrop of her mother's mental illness and, ultimately, her brother's death. Part poetry, part elegy, Dear Boy grapples with the universal issues of human longing and grief while praising the unexpected beauty to be found in the wake of such sorrows.

A Family DownfallA Family Downfall is an account of the author's painful memories of the contributing factors in the vicious cycle of dysfunction in her picture perfect family of origin. The focus is on how family members influence each other and how fractured family relationships develop to a point of no return; the author examines the topics of economic and social downfall and loss of physical and mental health. Positive themes also stretch through the entire story, like the joy of hard-won progress of immigrant parents in the USA, and the values of family support and deep sibling bond.

Suffering "Long Covid" A Survivor's Guide to Recovery and ResilienceWhat if Covid-19 was not the end, but the beginning of a long and terrifying ordeal?Nominated for the Eric Hoffer Book Award, 2023. From the book: "Those who have continuing symptoms after Covid-19 has run its course are referred to as having, "long covid". Or, "long haulers disease". That initial bout of Covid-19 can be either horrible, deadly, or show no symptoms at all. Some new research is pointing to a relationship with low cortisol levels for those contracting LC. Research is ongoing. Some of which I had never heard of before this, and have included in this book. "Regardless the duration of LC, aside from its symptomologies, it really becomes another monster all its own. While some have indicated LC can last a couple of years, others seem to get over it much sooner. It's yet to be seen if some may never be rid of it. Although my own first experience with LC lasted just over a year. Between eight to fourteen months it was hard to tell if it was LC or reinfections. I assume now it was just fading LC that would flare up with longer durations between."Then I caught Covid and LC again, in 2022. And the symptoms were far worse, and life threatening. "This book has three main parts. The first, is in these chapters. The last part is an interesting list of reference links. Some are referenced in these chapters. While many others are there for your own reference. In the second half I include my daily logs, from living through my own version of long covid."

Inspired by the excruciating circumstances she has had to overcome, and encouraged by the word of God, up-and-coming actress and entrepreneur, known as Vitelle, unleashes some of her most intimate poems, short stories, monologues, and journal entries written from the time she was a young girl. If a fairytale story with a happy ending is what you were looking for, you may want to sit this one aside. It is not for the sensitive or faint of heart. It is true. It is honest. It is unfortunate, yet relatable. This collection outlining the life of Vitelle is the first of a series of books, stage productions, and movies to come, each shedding more light on the various testimonies featured in this book. Consider it a "sampler platter" of sorts. If this one intrigues you, I urge you to stay tuned for what's to come.
This is a true story of survival against all odds. If you or someone you know and love has been affected by prescription or recreational drugs, alcohol, mental illness or the American legal system, this book may prove interesting and helpful.

Eric Litsky brings us on a funny, rollicking, heartfelt trip down memory lane, from coming of age adventures, to growing up and still being the free-spirited and roguish adult that keeps the neighborhood on its toes. And then there was the time I nearly burnt down my house. I didn't mean to. I blame it on the poor science education I received at PS 176.One afternoon I watched the movie "Young Tom Edison" on channel 9's "Million Dollar Movie." I thought it would be a great idea to invent something that would change the world. If I could harness the energy of lightning my parents would never have to pay another electric bill. And I would get first prize at the school science fair. It sounded so simple. Time to experiment.By all counts, you could say Eric Litsky had a pretty standard freewheeling childhood. In short, growing up in the 1950's and 60's in Queens, there was little supervision and a whole lot of mischief kids could get into. What makes Litsky's reminiscing unique is the view he brings to the stories. Mostly irreverent and fun loving, with completely unexpected pulls at the heartstrings, Litsky takes the reader along for the trip down memory lane, all while integrating poignant little insights into universal truths and lessons that are so uniquely human.A delightful read for book lovers of all walks of life, you'll laugh out loud, shake your head, and maybe reach for a tissue once or twice. Get ready for a very fun ride.
