The Men Within is a collection of intimate thoughts, prayers, and letters that represent the struggles of the man, the good man, and the godly man that dwell within me and a sharing of insight into how they transition from one to another.I believe that we all have had situations when we have struggled between doing what is right or wrong, being generous or selfish, demonstrating initiative or procrastination, being caring or obtuse, and being forgiving or exacting punishment, even if one should dare to love. The struggle will always be there when such challenging issues arise to trouble us. The concern is not if the issue will get resolved, but which facet of a person will respond to resolve the issue at hand. Will it be the one that wants to fulfill the desires of the here and now, the one that wants to do the right thing for family, friends, and community, or the one that has the desire for every person to consider the decisions that affect life after this one? With the facets of an individual transitioning from one to another with troublesome issues of anger, disappointment, frustration, stress, pain, love, happiness, deception, and admiration, sometimes there is no resolve that the individual can arrive at other than taking those things back to the one who created all things, is in all things, and can reconcile all things.

A love letter to the small shop, and shop owners everywhere, by beloved bookseller Peter Miller. “There is a tradition of shopkeeping, a tradition of codes, etiquette, and customs. For the most part, it is an oral history, passed along, person to person. You learn to be a retailer—not by going to college, but by going to work. You learn from people who have learned how to run a shop.” [from the Introduction] For more than four decades, Peter Miller has run a design bookshop that shares his name in Seattle. He has also written three of his own books, manuals about cooking and about food and about eating together. In this love letter to his day job, Miller writes for the first time about his other love: shopkeeping. Miller crafts stories from the bookshop floor with wry humor and skillful storytelling. Readers are taken on a shopkeeping journey and will come to understand along the way that small shops characterize our towns and cities, making them unique, special, and worth visiting and living near. This essay collection is for shop lovers everywhere and captures the art and heart of running a local shop treasured by the community that surrounds it. By the end, you can’t help wanting to own a shop.

When William S. Repsher published Skipping Through the Graveyard in My Puke-Stained Suit in 2017, he thought detailing his childhood years in rural Pennsylvania through the 1970s was the only part of his life he could chronicle. He soon realized he had a wealth of material regarding his 30+ years living in New York City and set about compiling How You Are to cover the years 1987 to 2019. it began with a small spark of energy he felt listening to Velvet Underground albums at college in the mid-80s, through a disastrous trial-and-error year in 1987, to the realization at the end of that year that he could move to New York City and give it a shot. What followed was a decade living in the Bronx, learning how to live in a city that was in the middle of a crack epidemic and how to navigate what at first seemed like an alien environment. While he thought he was moving to the city to reinvent himself, he soon realized he was only evolving into an adult, embracing his past and finding out how to use those working-class values in a place where they weren't so alien. As the line from the book's introduction notes, there's how you see yourself and how you are. That concept applies as much to personal change as it does to self acceptance. After a decade in the Bronx, he moved to Queens and encountered a whole new environment to assimilate. Although he had moved to a predominately white area, he soon found himself in a rapidly gentrifying working-class neighborhood that in ways felt more alienating than anything he encountered in the Bronx. Along the way, Mr. Repsher describes the people, experiences and places that helped shape his views of the city. From Manny Upstairs in the Bronx boarding house to the dog who couldn't bark in Astoria, he offers snapshots of city life over the years that give a down-to-earth, "neighborhood" view of New York that is often portrayed in far more fantastical lights.

It was three years before the second world war began that I was born in a town called Terneuzen. This small community is close to the city of Antwerp in Belgium. Imagine a house whose wiring is spliced and patchy with knob and tube, coiled like a serpent ready to strike and spark at any moment. Even if you have a fire trap behind your walls, the lights will turn on. In her memoir of a life lived in physical pain, Karen Engle asks whether and how language can capture what it's like to be in a body that appears to work from the outside, when its internal systems operate through an ad hoc assemblage of garbled messaging, reroutings, and shaky foundations. A series of narrative reflections capture the myriad ways in which the chronic conditions its suffering subject. Contrary to claims that pain obliterates language - long a trope of writing about illness - Engle contends that the person with chronic pain is not hampered by a scarcity of language, but rather its excess: enervation by the unending waves of utterance. From a history of the word chronic and its shifting significance to meditations on multiple diagnoses and interactions with medical personnel, Chronic Conditions is a doctor's case file through the looking glass of a creative writer, scholar, and patient. Engle explores, through medical research, literature, and art, how it feels to become attuned to the rhythms of perpetual and mysterious physical pain. At stake here is the search for a kind of writing that does not instrumentalize pain for allegorical or transcendental purposes. Chronic pain is not a sign of weakness, nor is it an opportunity for personal growth, Engle argues. Instead, it is entirely ordinary and deeply affecting.
