Jerry's zest for life and breadth of experiences, combined with an idiosyncratic sense of humor, have yielded this collection of entertaining, insightful, and heartwarming essays. Life Is What Happens While You Make Other Plans is a must-read for anyone interested in getting a glimpse of life through the spectacles of a modern-day Renaissance man. --DAVID LEE, MD, emergency department physician, Palomar Health Dr. Jerry Kolins--pathologist, hospital administrator, scuba diver, fine wine collector, Wolverine football fanatic, and bow tie aficionado--has now shown what he can do as a writer. Life Is What Happens While You Make Other Plans is a collection of essays that are poignant, funny, and sincere. --JOHN CANNON, retired, editor at the San Diego Union-Tribune for twenty-seven years; Pulitzer Prize nominee; and graduate of Loyola University Chicago Jerry couldn't make it physically through one day of football practice, but his passion and obsession with Michigan football are truly sincere to those of us who played the game. --BRAYLON EDWARDS, Fred Biletnikoff Award winner (2004), NFL Pro Bowl (2007), and author of Doing It My Way: My Outspoken Life as a Michigan Wolverine, NFL Receiver, and Beyond Jerry's vibrant personality comes across through his engaging prose, the relatively concise themed segments, and his ability and willingness to tackle a wide range of topics, even extremely painful and personal ones, head-on. That's rather brave of him, and it adds significantly to the authenticity of his voice. --DIARMAID Ã FOIGHIL, professor and curator, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Michigan
The first book from short story writer, poet, and essayist Jennifer Gravley, The Story I Told My Mother questions what it means to be the adult daughter of a mother-and eventually, a daughter without a mother. The opening poems, anchored in this inevitably fraught relationship, recount a desire for connection that is ultimately unachievable with the death of Gravley's mother. The concluding hermit crab essay contends with the messiness and interrupting quality of grief through formal restraint, delivering a ferocious gut punch. For Gravley, language and storytelling are a way forward, and wielding them rebuilds her world and self.
An engaging memoir, The Beautifully Healed Rose details a woman's journey of abuse from adolescence to early adulthood. Her encounter with domestic violence and trauma would leave her in a desperate place of pain and despair. The good news is that this was not the end of her story. As you walk with her, witness how God redeemed and restored her by healing the girl she was, showing her the woman she is, and revealing the rose she was purposefully designed to be. The truth is that life may not always be good, but God's unconditional love is.
Every page in How Much are These Free Books? reflects Judy Hoff's delight in her store's books and customers. With only a $4000 loan and no retailing experience, Judy opens her tiny, used bookstore in Schenectady, New York. Odds seem against her. - General Electric Co., the area's major employer moves thousands of jobs south. - Mega bookstores move into the area, and along with amazon.com they offer drastic price deductions. - A children's bookstore opens just three blocks away, cutting into the most profitable part of the Book Nook's business.Yet the Book quadruples its space and evolves into a full-service store, switching to new books exclusively, remaining in business for nineteen years (1983-2992).

"Only those of us who have walked on sharp stones can tell others what it is like. Shelly Knox, the author of this book, has been thrown down on such stones. She has known such a path all her fifty-four years. In this life, no one gets a prize for those who suffered the most. There is no thick skin to cover the innocence of a child. The inward retreat of a constantly abused child knows almost no relief. As I read this book, my caring heart feels her earliest wounds. I started teaching Latin to Shelly in fifth grade when she was nine years old. Her ebony skin shone. A child with nowhere to turn. There was no unconditional love, no safety for her from any family, but she did have a few friends, not many, from the neighborhood. That could help her out somewhat in her time of trouble.Such an intolerable life does produce an extreme need for relief, even an exit strategy. As a child, Shelly began to look for ways to take her life. Her years of courage continue now into a now-loving grandmother whose work as a caretaker for seniors is a miracle daily. The shackles of PTSD still rattle, but close memories of grace and survival see her through.>JAMES VILLAREAL, June 12, 2021
It was a matter of discipline. I had thought about putting this book together for a long time. I thought it would be a nice little gift for special occasions. It was important that a glimpse of my soul be exposed for all to share; after all, what more would I have to offer?
This is a real-life accounting of the "aging season" of one's life journey. It is also about remaining healthy during these years especially if one has a nutritional plan, and an exercise protocol, that is age-appropriate, and both of these important factors are accompanied by a hefty segment of love! Additionally, it is about creating adventure and excitement in a multitude of aging plans so that the reader can discover their own pathway to a healthy "aging season!" This does not have to be a period in one's life when each day is all about juggling doctor visits! And it should not become a time when one spends one's days at the closest park with the ducks! They, the ducks, enjoy the company and the nutritional "fix", but what do you get out of this? It is a time when your work cycle is in your rear-view mirror, and it is time for travel, adventure, creativity, companionship, and love! Think of an equilateral triangle (three equal sides) representing nutrition, exercise, and love! Finally, do not minimize the importance of a late-in-life romantic relationship! It is the "magic" medicine to pour into your IV!

"For a decade, the issue of forest and land use in British Columbia raged like a forest fire . . ."Shamed by demonstrators as a "tree-killer," Clayoquot Sound tree faller Bruce Hornidge faced soul-searing losses of identity and family livelihood. This gripping, irony-laden memoir of a life spent harvesting in the beauty of the forest deals frankly with the nearly invisible human fallout of the inevitable move away from a resource-based economy and the impact on one man's psyche.Hornidge recalls his career as a faller in the West Coast forestry industry from the unique and sometimes irreverent point of view of the many loggers in Ucluelet and Tofino whose forestry careers were cut short on the other side of the demonstrators' picket lines amid government and company doublespeak.Three decades after The War in the Woods, we think we know what happened, and we've been told why. Here's what we were never told.

"In Breaking the Curse, Alex DiFrancesco takes their own crushing experiences of assault, addiction, and transphobic violence as the starting point for a journey to self-reclamation. Reeling in the aftermath of a rape that played out as painfully in public as in private, DiFrancesco begins to pursue spirituality in earnest, searching for an ancestral connection to magic as a form of protection and pathway to transformation. Propelled by a knowledge of the spiritual role of the transgender person in society, Alex winds through Cleveland and Brooklyn and Philly-from rehab and pagan AA meetings and friends' spare mattresses to tarot readers and books about Italian witchcraft to daily ritual, prayer, altar-making, and folk tradition. In so doing, they begin to not only piece together a way to heal but also call into existence a life that finally feels worth living. Breaking the Curse weaves spells, blasphemous novenas, and personal memories to imagine a new memoir form. Speaking about trauma does not always take its power away, DiFrancesco reminds us, but one can write their truth so that the hurt no longer fills the whole horizon"--
What role should white educators play in promoting equity and equality in their classrooms and schools?
Born in Taiwan, Grace Loh Prasad was two years old when the threat of political persecution under Chiang Kai-shek's dictatorship drove her family to the United States, setting her up to become an accidental immigrant. The family did not know when they would be able to go home again; this exile lasted long enough for Prasad to forget her native Taiwanese language and grow up American. Having multilingual parents-including a father who worked as a translator-meant she never had to develop the fluency to navigate Taiwan on visits. But when her parents moved back to Taiwan permanently when she was in college and her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she recognized the urgency of forging a stronger connection with her birthplace before it was too late. As she recounts her journey to reclaim her heritage in The Translator's Daughter, Prasad unfurls themes of memory, dislocation, and loss in all their rich complexity. The result is a unique immigration story about the loneliness of living in a diaspora, the search for belonging, and the meaning of home.
"In her revelatory, uplifting debut book from Grammy Award winner Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Billboard's Gospel Artist of the Decade, shares the transformative power of showing up to hard things with resilient faith and perseverance"--
